The German Ministry of Defence has contracted two defence and technology firms to manufacture unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) for Ukraine.

The agreement is part of Berlin’s ongoing efforts to support Ukrainian forces needing advanced systems to counter Russian aggression.

As part of the contract, autonomous systems manufacturer Milrem Robotics and German firm Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) will partner to deliver 14 THeMIS UGVs to Kyiv.

Seven will be reconfigured to support casualty evacuation and are expected to arrive in Ukraine by the end of the year. The other seven will be in the route clearance configuration, with payloads from French defense manufacturer CNIM Systèmes Industriels.

The French Directorate General of Armaments (DGA, Direction Générale de l’Armement) announced that the TALIOS pod, that captured HD video recently, will be integrated with the Rafale F4 standard.

The new data link integrated into the pod makes it possible to transmit a video as well as metadata to troops on the ground in order to improve the coordination of operations such as target designation, firing control, etc. Conducted in early November, the DGA said TALIOS pod has a “high definition” capability.

This enables the crew to be provided with a more resolved near-infrared image and to integrate a color visible wide-field sensor which will make it possible to colorize high-definition videos from the Rafale F4.2 standard. The 36 pods remaining to be delivered will be in this configuration.

Norwegian defense company Kongsberg announced on Wednesday that British frigates and destroyers are to be equipped with its made Naval Strike Missile.

The Royal Navy will receive the Naval Strike Missile (NSM), outfitted on Type 23 frigates and Type 45 destroyers, in a collaboration with the Norwegian government.

According to a press release from Kongsberg, the collaboration will result in more ships equipped with the highly sophisticated Naval Strike Missiles which in turn will contribute in enhancing the security in our common areas of interest. Replacing the Harpoon surface-to-surface weapon, due to go out of service in 2023, the world-class anti-ship missile will be ready for operations onboard the first Royal Navy vessel in a little over 12 months.

“Kongsberg is very pleased to welcome the Royal Navy as a member of the NSM User Group. We proudly support the strengthening of defense ties between our nations by integrating the NSM on the Royal Navy’s vessels,” says Executive Vice President in Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace Øyvind Kolset.

The Norwegian Defence Material Agency (NDMA) has signed a contract with Lockheed Martin for the delivery of eight TPY-4 military air surveillance radars with an option for three additional radars.
Signed on November 17, the contract will see Lockheed deliver the ground-based air surveillance radar to Norway to enhance the country’s long-range surveillance capability.

Three of the new radars will be installed in existing locations, replacing current systems, while five will be installed in new locations. The new radars will enable the Norwegian armed forces to maintain its continuous surveillance of both Norwegian and surrounding air space, acting as NATO’s eyes in the north.

“We are grateful to be selected to help protect the safety of Norwegians. The TPY-4 is a continued advancement of our 21st Century Security vision supporting joint all domain operations for the United States and its allies,” said Chandra Marshall, vice president of Radar and Sensor Systems at Lockheed Martin.

Britain will spend £4.2 billion ($4.9 billion) on five new frigates from defense giant BAE Systems to bolster security “in the face of increased Russian threats,” Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said.

“The UK and allies are taking steps to bolster their security in the face of increased Russian threats,” Sunak said in a Downing Street statement.

“Russia’s actions put all of us at risk. As we give the Ukrainian people the support they need, we are also harnessing the breadth and depth of UK expertise to protect ourselves and our allies. This includes building the next generation of British warships.”

The spending is the next phase in a program under which three vessels are already under construction, and all eight frigates are expected to be completed by the mid-2030s.

China unveiled several of its latest air defense missile and laser systems at the Airshow China 2022 held in Zhuhai, South China’s Guangdong Province from Tuesday to Sunday, in a move experts said showed that China is building a world-class comprehensive air defense system that can safeguard the country’s sky from potential attacks.

Despite having been exhibited to the general public in the past, the HQ-9B surface-to-air missile weapon system of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force on display at the Airshow China featured for the first time a new type of missile in addition to the previously known one.

Eight of this new type of missile can be carried by the same transporter erector launcher that can carry four of the previously known type, as the new missile is about the same length but obviously thinner than the old one.

Iran has developed a hypersonic missile capable of penetrating all defense systems, General Amirali Hajizadeh, the commander of its Revolutionary Guards aerospace unit said.

Hypersonic missiles, like traditional ballistic missiles which can deliver nuclear weapons, can fly more than five times the speed of sound.

“This hypersonic ballistic missile was developed to counter air defence shields,” Hajizadeh said, quoted by Iran’s Fars news agency.

“It will be able to breach all the systems of anti-missile defence,” said the general, adding that he believed it would take decades before a system capable of intercepting it is developed.

The firepower of the upgraded Kamov Ka-52M helicopter gunships (nicknamed ‘Alligator’) will increase due to a new sight, which promotes the engagement of the weapons at night: the thermal vision channel of the sight doubles the detection and target identification range.

The sight was upgraded according to the Syrian experience, where helicopters were mostly engaged at night. Ka-52 fired Vikhr guided missiles with a maximum range of 8 km in Syria.

The upgraded helicopter will also engage new guided weapons. Work is ongoing to install Safar radar and increase Vikhr’s range to 10 km. Ka-52M has to complete acceptance trials this month and has been already tested in Ukraine.

The United States, Japan, and South Korea warned Wednesday that a North Korean nuclear test would warrant an “unprecedentedly strong response,” vowing unity after a blitz of missile launches from the hermit state.

Following talks in Tokyo, the three nations’ deputy foreign ministers said they would ramp up their deterrence in the region.

“We agreed to further strengthen cooperation so that North Korea can immediately stop its illegal activities and return to denuclearisation talks,” said South Korea’s Cho Hyun-dong.

“The three countries agreed on the need for an unprecedentedly strong response if North Korea proceeds with its seventh nuclear test,” he told reporters.

An extensive report in the Welt newspaper refers to plans for the Leopard tanks to be co-produced between German arms giant Krauss-Maffei-Wegmann and a Greek company.

According to the report, “against the background of the war in Ukraine and a complex campaign of circular exchange of weapons systems, a major project is now in the works. It is about the possibility of additional co-production or modernisation of hundreds of older Leopard tanks in Greece.”

“In response to WELT’s question, KMW essentially confirmed the talks with METKA, but did not provide further details,” the report added.

A terse statement from the Munich-based armaments group said only that “discussions concern the Leopard 1A5 and Leopard 2 while plans to produce the tanks steel hull are under discussion.”

India unveiled on Monday its first batch of locally-made attack helicopters, designed primarily for use in high-altitude areas like the Himalayas where its troops clashed with China in 2020.

The Light Combat Helicopters are seen as another milestone in Indian efforts to reduce dependence on Russia, its main source of arms, and other suppliers.

The choppers made by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) “will be a big boost to the Indian Air Force’s combat prowess,” Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said at Jodhpur air base in western India.

“It is a momentous occasion, a matter of great pride, and a result of two decades of diligent research and development,” Singh said.

The Philippine Air Force on July 5, 2022, announced that the first two of three Spyder air defense missile systems would be delivered by the last quarter of 2022: “The Spyder Philippines Air Defense System is very much on time; delivery will be earlier than scheduled (January 2023).

It will be in the country by the end of November or the first week of December. The project is for three batteries. The first delivery will be of two batteries”, Air Force spokesperson Col. Maynard Mariano said in a message to the Philippine News Agency. A battery consists of three or more missile launchers. So, the first delivery has been completed ahead on schedule.

The last Spyder battery will be delivered along with a missile maintenance facility which will be built in the Philippines, giving military personnel the capability to maintain the weapon system: “We have upgraded the program. The last battery will be delivered with a missile maintenance facility to be built in the country at no expense to the government. There will be a technology transfer that goes with this and it will make us capable of maintaining missile systems and will greatly help in the sustainment of the program,” Mariano said.
