“In everlasting memory of the anguish of our ancestors. May those who died rest in peace. May those who return find their roots. May humanity never again perpetuate such injustice against humanity. We the living vow to uphold this.” 🙏🏿

Brazil was the last country in the Western world to abolish the enslavement of human beings. a legacy that the country still struggles to address more than 350 years after the first enslaved Africans landed on its shores.

Is “Latino” considered a race? 🤔

Quite often in the comments we see people confused around this topic and misusing the word Latin/o/a/e. “Latino” refers to the vibrant cultural identity shared by individuals from Latin American countries, transcending racial boundaries.

It encompasses a rich blend of ethnicities, including Indigenous, European, African, and more. Being Latino is about embracing a shared heritage, language, and traditions that go beyond the concept of race.

Let’s celebrate the diversity and unity of the Latino community! 🎉🌍

María Remedios also known as the “Madre de la Patria” was an Afro-Argentine soldier who participated in the Argentine War of Independence.

She was largely forgotten until the beginning of the 21st century, when activists and scholars began to include the history of people who had been left out of the historiography of the country because of deliberate discrimination based on gender and race.

🇸🇻Have you heard of Prudencia Ayala? An Afro-indigenous Salvadoran, who was born in 1885 in Sonsonate and moved to Santa Ana City at age 10. Despite dropping out of school, she became a self-taught seamstress and a social activist, fighting against imperialism, promoting feminism, and advocating for Central American reunification.

She was also known for her predictions and was jailed for two months after accusations of planning a coup against the government. Ayala made history in 1930 by attempting to run for El Salvador’s presidency, with a platform including support for unions, honesty in government, and legal recognition of children born out of wedlock, but her nomination was rejected by the Supreme Court.

Ayala passed away in 1936 at age 51 and was largely omitted from the history of El Salvador, but modern day feminist movements in El Salvador later have brought attention to her contributions. In 2017, a street in San Jacinto, San Salvador, was named in her honor.

Did you know about the unsung heroes of Mexican history: The Morelos Black Brigade, led by José María Morelos, made up of enslaved and freed Afro-Mexicans who played a key role in the War of Independence. These brave soldiers, along with other Afro-Mexican units, fought for freedom and their contributions to the fight for independence should never be forgotten.

It’s worth to mention that in addition to these specific groups, Afro-Mexicans also fought in other units, and were also involved in other aspects of the war, such as supplying troops and providing logistical support.

Have you heard of the Mascogos, also known as Black Seminoles? They are descendants of escaped enslaved Africans who escaped from plantations in the American South during the 17th and 18th centuries.

They fled first to Florida, which was then owned by the Spanish, who generally allowed escaped slaves to live as free men and women.

The Mascogos joined the Seminole Indians in Florida and formed a new identity. They lived peacefully and prosperously in Florida before being forced to fight in the Seminole Wars in the 1800s.

The United States took control of Florida in 1821. Nine years later, President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act, which forced native tribes in the Southeast, including the Mascogos, along the Trail of Tears, to Oklahoma.

They eventually fled to Mexico and became military colonists, defending the border against Indian raids. In 1870, they agreed to be enlisted as Indian Scouts in the U.S. Army and were promised land on the Seminole reservation and citizenship. The majority of their service was in the 1870s, in which they played a significant role in ending the Texas-Indian Wars.

However, the U.S. government failed to keep its promises and the Mascogos were denied land and support, leading to a life of poverty and starvation. Today, the Mascogos live in Coahuila, Mexico are struggling due to drought and poverty, while Black Seminoles in the U.S. are concentrated in Oklahoma and Texas.

Did you know this?

In 1855, history was made when more than 4,000 enslaved Africans in Texas were helped by Mexicans to escape the brutal realities of slavery and find freedom in Mexico.

The Mexican government, who abolished slavery in 1829, recognized the value and contributions of the black community, actively encouraged the settlement of free Black Americans in Northern Mexico as a means to strengthen the region’s population and economy.

Even though the former enslaved Africans faced problems like being treated unfairly, many saw Mexico as a place for a better life and a chance to be free, which was hard to find in other parts of the world. Let us honor and remember their legacy and their fight for freedom.
