I’m proud to present to you my new EP, “Illorian,” on Illegal Alien Records. You can stream and buy the EP on Bandcamp by clicking on the artwork below.

I want to share with you some thoughts on the EP and each track.

"Illorian" is inspired by jazz, dub, melancholic moments, 80’s vocals, and something I wrote when I was very hungover. It is a textural and atmospheric experience that you can enjoy at home as easily as at the club.

The first track, the EP's namesake, is inspired by jazz music. I spent a lot of time listening to jazz. Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Dave Brubeck, Stan Getz, and João Gilberto, and anything from Blue Note Records are very influential to me. It’s a strange, moody mind-warp filled with funk and odd atmospheres.

"Everybody" is about being true to your sound and producing music that feels right to you. With this, I wanted the vocals to have an 80’s new wave sound to them. I can’t sing, but screw it. The bassline is actually noises from piano pedals run through some hot saturation, making the noise musical.

"Gangalang" - this track is dank. It was a happy accident from making music one night. I was exhausted from a day's work and not happy with anything I made that night. I was about to give up and go to bed, but decided to play with a sequencer for a few minutes. I was seriously into the synth sound, so I came up with the synth line, added a kick, then went to sleep and worked on it the next day.

"Moods of a Hungover Man" is exactly what it sounds like. I was playing with the idea of jazz rhythms, especially for the low-end frequencies, after a night of drinking. I guess you could say the track represents exactly how I felt - fulfilled with fun, but also a little melancholy. You know how it goes.

Some info about the EP:

A1. Itch the Scratch - a tense and textural club focused beat. This went through a few versions to get the low-end groove just right, but we got there. The pads and soundscapes were made by stretching samples out. I really love stretching sounds so they take on another form altogether.

A2. Do You Like Sound? - This track began life as a harder tune with the grumbling, heavily modulated bass line. The vibe changed with the pads. They’re made by running pad samples through a step sequencer and heavily effected, one of those happy accidents. The vocals were the last thing added, which I hope trip a few people out when played.

B1. Nine Four - my personal favourite. I was inspired by Miles Davis and the quirky time signatures of Dave Brubeck. The track itself is in, you guessed it, 9/4. The growling sound is this tune’s hallmark. It sounded different the first time I played the track back. The goal of the vocals is to check in with the crowd. I love vocals that play along with the journey of a DJ set.

B2. Dub 1 - made using samples of pulsars. Pulsars are some of natures most extreme objects found in the universe. They’re highly magnetised neutrons stars that rotate. Pulsars emit radiation from their magnetic poles which can be detected when the emissions point towards earth. The emissions are highly precise and create cool textural rhythmic sounds. Science lesson over. Listen for the crunchy looping textures, and that’s a pulsar. Over this is a nice melodic dub tune with minimal elements.

D1. Piana - club focused and dubby, perfect for a high energy moment of dance. Temudo really nailed the mastering on this track, as he brought out everything from the low end.

I cannot wait to hold a copy of the record in my hands. Big love and thanks to .collective for releasing the EP. Truly an honour to be a part of the family. Thanks also to the people who’ve sent messages of support, listened and played these tracks out.

The cat is out of the bag with this one. I’m thrilled to announce my first solo vinyl EP ‘Thank you, brain.’ is releasing soon on HAYES Collective.

Big love to my Hayes family for once again trusting in my music. It’s a real honour.

2022 has been the most formative year for my music. It was the year I played my first show in Europe, and formed an experience that'll change my future. I can't wait for 2023. Thanks also to all the support from my friends and family, and to those who listened and danced to my music.
