The guitar that revolutionized Garifuna music: Guayo Cedeño (1974-2022)

The Stonetree family has lost a very dear friend and one of our most influential musical collaborators of the past 15 years.

Our journey started in 2006 with a series of memorable recording sessions for Andy Palacio’s seminal Watina album. It is not an understatement to say that Guayo’s guitar playing on that album paved the way for a new era in Garifuna music, adding a layer of musicality and soulfulness that has transformed Garifuna music forever. Since then, Guayo played his guitar on every single Garifuna song recorded by Stonetree, including all the songs in Watina, Umalali, Laru Beya, Landini, Ayó, Darandi and Aban.

In the studio, Guayo had only one rule: We all had to be ready to record his guitar at any given time. He used to say that whatever he played the first time he listened to a song was his true feeling. He was almost always right, all of his solos were either first or second takes. Yes, being with Guayo in the studio was often an otherworldly musical experience.

But it was not only in the studio that Guayo made his mark: for years he toured the world with Andy Palacio, Umalali, The Garifuna Collective and especially with Aurelio Martinez, his musical brother in arms. His spirited, spry and soaring guitar playing on stage was always one of the highlights of every concert.

In 2013 we recorded Coco Bar, a solo project of Caribbean surf guitar explorations. It was Stonetree’s first fully instrumental album which was entirely composed and recorded in three days at the Stonetree studio in Benque Viejo. We enjoyed ourselves so much that in the following years we recorded material for 2 more Coco Bar albums that we didn’t get a chance to release.

Central America has lost one of its most gifted musicians, for the Stonetree sound and our Garifuna recordings, he is simply irreplaceable - we were all enriched by his immense contribution and are now impoverished by his loss. Thank you Guayo for sharing your gift with us.

A call for support: Guayo passed away yesterday on March 11th in Tegucigalpa, Honduras after being rushed to the hospital due to a serious respiratory complication. His wife Gaby had given birth to their son Macias Eduardo Cedeño two days earlier on March 9th.

His family has started a gofundme campaign to assist his wife and children in these times of need. Please help them with any amount that you can.
