Second-year students from the Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English of Section A showcased their stage play adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream and garnered special recognitions at the outdoor stage, May 23 and 24.

During the culminating program yesterday, the section's play adaptation successfully obtained several awards namely Best Play, Best in Costume Design, Best in Make-Up Design, Best in Set Design, and Best in Poster.

Trisha Ivy Dela Rosa was awarded as Best Female Performer for her portrayal as Hermia. Meanwhile, Jamaira Echiverri, who portrayed as Puck in the play, was recognized as Best Supporting Female Performer.

Produced by the greatest playwright William Shakespeare, the adaptation depicts the playful love fate of two couples as they got tricked by two fairies in the middle of the forest.

Furthermore, the production served as their major requirement of their course ELANG 105: Speech and Theater Arts under the advisorship of Dr. James Zandro Ventura III.

Despite the short yet tiring preparation, the performance made the audience left in awe and tickled them with countless laugh. Moreover, the grand debut of the said production reflects the collective effort, unswerving hardwork, and incomparable creativity poured by the section.

In a fervent pursuit of Ilocana empowerment, the Rabbis are on a winning streak as Miss Solsona, Angeline M. Caraang of BSE English 4A, clinches the Miss Ilocos Norte title during tonightโ€™s grand finale at the Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena.

Caraang's radiant presence in her elegant white-beaded gown stole the spotlight, effortlessly eclipsing her 22 competitors from diverse locales across the province. Her stellar performance, spanning from the preliminary rounds to the crowning moment, elicited thunderous applause and widespread admiration from the audience, cementing her status as a leading contender for the coveted title. With grace and poise, Caraang's journey through the pageant showcased her exceptional talent and undeniable charm.

In the wake of her 2022 win as the SK Gameng titleholder, the 22-year-old Rabbi emerged as a proud ambassador for the Municipality of Solsona. Her achievement not only showcased her prowess but also etched a significant milestone in history. Solsona made headlines by clinching its first-ever Miss Ilocos Norte crown at the provincial pageant's illustrious 10th anniversary gala.

The crown, symbolizing the pinnacle of beauty and grace, was ceremoniously passed from Lovely Demandante, a co-senior in the Science Department.

In the climactic moment of the competition, she faced a pivotal question: How can she effectively embody and impart empathy to the youth of Ilocos?

Her articulate response reflected depth: "As an Ilokana and Miss Ilocos Norte aspirant, I can embody empathy by empowering my fellow youth. As the Sangguniang Kabataan chairperson of our barangay, I can use my platform to empathize with them, to put my situation in them, and to know what actions I should take to foster positivity and help my fellow youth."

This victory feels like destiny fulfilled. To our esteemed Miss Ilocos Norte 2024, Angeline M. Caraang, your achievement fills us with immense pride. You were destined for greatness, ma'am, and tonight, you've proven it once more.

Being a twenty-year-old college student with lots of time in my hand, it became customary for me to ponder about a lot of things. Much of the time spent pondering is often within the confines of our humble three-by-three bathroom. In our bathroom, little wanderers who reek of urine and other unknown bodily substances pass by, as if pedestrians crossing the divisions and lines of our mid-80s designed bathroom floor. Of course, the initial (and ideal) reaction for a 5-foot-eight, eighty-ish kilogram man like me is to stomp these prehistoric insects to death. But, alas, in the midst of 17-degree sub-freezing temperatures on a January midnight, a stomp would only create unnecessary noise that could possibly wake my snoring mother. Not to mention, I was wearing one of those slippers that was so heavy and made so much noise that it often reminded me of our tumbang preso games when I was a mere snot-dripper.

Amidst this circumstance, a rather peculiar question came to my restless mind, "What is the most humane way to kill a cockroach?" In my mind, I thought that I was spending unnecessary time looking for an answer for this pointless question and that it was much too stupid to gain any literary potential. Most importantly, as a busy university student, I was chipping away valuable time that was intended for studying or resting. But, of course, any idea from the porcelain throne should be respected โ€” even if it is as stupid as asking for the most humane option to kill a cockroach.

And so, there I was, at midnight, testing my theories in my half-dead state, trying my best to still focus on doing my original bathroom-visit deed. Boiling water was one of the first methods of murder that came to mind. I reflected on how when I was a child, I used to watch this Chinese lady who interestingly spoke fluent Filipino, and cooked a lobster. I thought that it could also be applied to exterminating pests. Albeit being simple and effective, it was, for me, much too cruel especially because I wasn't intending to eat any poached cockroaches in the future. Insect sprays and other methods of chemical attacks sounded so evil and cartoonish, too. Moreover, considering the fact that I could contribute to the rising CO2 emissions and that it reminded me of a prominent figure in the 1940s made it a bad option altogether.

During my philosophical escapade and while I was finishing my deed, I came to realize and actually structure a somewhat lawful basis for my insect-killing ideas. "The Arthropod Morals" was the first that came to mind. It sounded proper and somewhat niche; like it could be a full room display in the National Museum of Natural History. Consequently, while I was setting my eyes on this vile creature, I was skeptical on what could be the basis of this set of moral standards.

"Human morality couldn't exactly equate to insect morality," I said to myself. After all, insects are scum. But, do cockroaches see themselves the same way humans do? Do they have regard for other insect life? Do they have arthropod babies that they cherish, too? Is this cockroach a hardworking husband providing for a family at home? Could he be a budding student whoโ€™s scheduled to take an exam tomorrow? Will he be missed if I executed him right on that bathroom floor? Will there be justice for my unexplained lust for anger?

To be weary of the roaring thunder of my thoughts made me feel stuck. Uncertainties, fragility, and judgments often drain me.

What am I meant to be?

When I was just a kid, I used to see myself as a seed that grows.
When I was a teen, I just wanted to be like a plant that blooms.
And now that I am an adult, I am figuring out how to bear fruit.

I'm still figuring out things to find meaning in everything, because I don't want to regret that, in the end, the road I took was not for me.

What's for me?
What season will I bloom?

Despite roaming around the castle of mystery and misery, I am aiming to see daylight, even if everything seems to be collapsing.

As I am walking, I wonder how many steps I have already taken. I may not know, but I can remember the things I passed by to get where I am now. I have crossed the humps, the cracks on the road, the broken bridgesโ€”oh, how did I overcome those? I almost lost my grip.

Through my journey, I learned how to acknowledge every step I took and to cheer on every achievement I thought was not. I realized I had already moved from the starting line. I am no longer at the place that made me think it was the end. I'm moving forward. I was fooled by myself into thinking that I was stuck.

Spearheaded by Hon. Ferdinand Alexander 'Sandro' Araneta Marcos III, a total of 1951 college students were awarded in the Stipend Distribution under the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Tulong-Dunong Program (TDP) at the Mariano Marcos State Universityโ€“College of Teacher Education (MMSUโ€“CTE) Outdoor Stage, today.

This initiative, which is a collaborative effort between the CHED Region I Office and the Office of the Congressman of the First District of Ilocos Norte, aims to provide financial grant to deserving students.

According to the list provided by the Institutional Student Programs and Services (ISPS) Unit, 1212 MMSU students were granted in the distribution of stipends. Moreover, beneficiaries from other private higher education institutions also received financial assistance.

The event kicked off with a brief Ceremonial Distribution Program, attended by various officials; however, the significance of the occasion lies in assisting the students with scholarship.

Stephanie Marcos, a Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSE) major in Filipino student and one of the recipients, revealed her intention of giving the stipend to her mother, stating, "During this semester, I desperately needed a laptop for my major subjects. My mother sacrificed her earnings to buy me one, and now that I have received the stipend, I want to repay her."

"This program is a lifeline for students like me, especially those in need. I hope initiatives like this continue to support students in the future," she added, expressing her appreciation for the Tulong-Dunong Program.

Underscoring the significance of investing in education, the CHED-TDP not only distributed stipends but also highlighted the transformative impact of such programs on the lives of students and their families.

In the contemporary world, debates on gender identity and equality dominate headlines. Traditionally, the term โ€œwomanโ€ has been heavily linked to biological factors such as body parts and reproductive capabilities. This definition still stands strong in many circles. However, as society progresses and our understanding evolves, itโ€™s time we recognize that defining womanhood solely based on biology is limiting and outdated.

While s*x is entirely biological, gender is a much more complex spectrum that extends far beyond mere biological differences. It encompasses a diverse range of identities, experiences, and expressions. Essentially, it is a social construct by which we categorize people.

With this in mind, it is disappointing to see that some of the highly-regarded academic institutions in the Philippines still box its students into the traditional definition of gender. These premises effectively dictate who is and who is not a woman, thereby excluding those who may identify as a woman but werenโ€™t born as one (transwomen and inters*x). Such rigidity forces individuals into an identity that they are not comfortable with. The fact that a lot of these premises are those that serve as training grounds for the teachers of the next generation, makes it unfortunate for such an old-fashioned mindset to prevail.

It is important to know that these pre-service teachers produced by these institutions will work with a more progressive environment than we have today. Thus, enforcing antique mindsets to them might seem obsolete when they actually hit the workforce.

Of course, as outlined in the Code of Conduct for Teachers, educators should maintain dignity at all times. However, contrary to popular belief, dignity should not even be a factor in this discussion, as simply expressing oneself in a respectful manner is not undignified at all. Thus, identifying as a gender that might or might not align with oneโ€™s s*x should be normalized.

Some may argue that including transgender women and inters*x individuals in the definition of womanhood could be seen as insulting to cisgender women (biological women). This opinion is valid. However, I firmly believe that providing a platform for these women should not be perceived as a threat, but rather as a celebration of inclusivity and diversity.

With these in mind, we simply have to accept that the world is changing, and so should we. Institutions should adapt to these changes and let women be women.

It is simple: womanhood is an identity shaped by experiences, feelings, and self-perceptionโ€”itโ€™s not solely defined by oneโ€™s body parts. It is time we move beyond outdated ideas and embrace a more inclusive understanding of the term. That's the kind of world we should collectively strive forโ€”one where everyone feels seen, accepted, and valued for who they are inside.

I summoned all my courage and marched straight to his doorstep first thing in the morning, heart pounding with anticipation. Nerves had me staring at the ground the whole way here. Iโ€™d bottled my feelings for too long; his โ€œyesโ€ would be the nicest birthday gift.

I knocked at his door, exactly three times before it finally creaks open.

โ€œHey!โ€ he greeted, still in his pajamas.

Having the courage, I looked straight to his eyes to confess, โ€œI like y-,โ€ only to be interrupted.

โ€œThis is why I shouldnโ€™t hang out with losers, he must think weโ€™re friends or something,โ€ I hear him say.

โ€œHuh?โ€ I stammered.

โ€œHuh?โ€ he echoed, puzzled.

โ€œOh, nothing,โ€ forcing a smile.

That day, I received my birthday gift: to be able to read minds.

The table has finally turned. Walls of barriers were already burned. This month of March, ladies from the north, females from the south, and women across the world celebrate the excellence of every woman and appreciate those women who changed history, fought for their rights in making their own stories, and freed them from the cage of standards set by society.

However, behind the flag of achievements and excellence being waved by women nowadaysโ€”attesting how they incredibly showcased their expertiseโ€”there were untold narratives of their scars that honed them and smoothed the way towards their rolesโ€™ remarkable transformation.

For many years, women lived with fears. They did not have any choice; they did not have a voice. They could not even have a chance to be the loudest or the truest. Society made them believe that they were only for house chores, but they did not have the right to study their dream course. They were attached to the idea that they did not have a space for achievements and they were not given the chance to taste the sweetness of success.

Women exist with a purpose. They proved that they are as strong and capable as anyone else. Women are more than what society dictates them to be. Aside from being the backbone of society, they also shaped history and transformed society with their indestructible passion, determination, strengths, and resilience. The accomplishments, struggles, and sacrifices of the women were worth recognizing and clapping for.

In society, it is evident how womenโ€™s roles have evolved from limited and marginalized positions to increasing empowerment and participation. Some of the great women who demonstrated their vigor, purpose, and commitment in society are:

Maria Josefa Gabriela Silang, who is widely renowned for being the first female revolutionary leader. The people of the Philippines never forgot how heroic her decision was and how fearless she was during that time.

Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago, who is the first Filipino and Asian judge of the International Criminal Court. They salute her for her intelligence and bravery in fighting corruption in the country.

Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, who is hailed as the Philippinesโ€™ first-ever Olympic gold medalist at the 2020 Summer Olympics, which was a historic victory for the country. Being the Philippinesโ€™ โ€œGolden Girlโ€ as she continued to bag medals from different competitions around the world proved that women are truly powerful, valiant, and resilient.

Adelita Bagcal, the Dallot Queen, who has been championing the performance of the waning Ilocano oral tradition โ€œDallotโ€ since she was fifteen. She is the only remaining master of the art that requires command of the Ilocano language, which makes her a leading force in the preservation and promotion of Ilocano oral traditions.

Female pioneers filling the pages of history is something that women should be proud of. These role models honored not only the country, but as well as all women. From the extraordinary stories of these women's lives to their singular and combined works debunked social assumptions and stereotypes regarding who women are and what women can do.

Women are no longer considered naturally weaker than the other gender, as they are now able to perform work requiring muscular or intellectual development. It is evident that they have made significant strides in the workforce, occupying positions in various sectors and breaking glass ceilings. They are now making sounds, proudly uttering, โ€œOh, how I love being a woman.โ€ They are letting their voice be heard by loudly advocating, โ€œAbante, Babae," โ€œLaban, Kababaihan," โ€œWomen Empowerment," and โ€œBabae ka, hindi babae lang,โ€ because they did not end up with just beauty but with diverse beauties of capabilities.

Breaking the barriers and shattering the stereotypes are not easy for women. Hence, despite the hurdles of being a woman, be as loud as you can. Be one of the empowered women. Be a phenomenal woman. As the saying goes, โ€œHereโ€™s to strong women: may we know them, may we be them, may we raise them.โ€

In the dynamic and evolving age of social media, the emergence of so-called "business influencers" has redefined the traditional or go-to career paths, placing in the spotlight the age-old question: "Degree o Diskarte?" Armed with charisma akin to that of a Ponzi scheme organizer, tech savviness, and a magnified view of their audience, they often present an alternative to pursuing formal education.

The rise of these influencers has more than likely given a new light to the term "diskarte" - the ability to adapt, innovate, and seize opportunities. Most, if not all of these individuals often leverage themselves through the lavish display of material possession and a narration of the typical rags-to-riches story to build a presence with followers and secure lucrative partnerships. The allure of such success can overshadow the necessity of a formal education for their vulnerable viewers - the youth.

While social media business influencers showcase the power of โ€œdiskarteโ€, it's crucial to ponder on the lasting impact of education in fostering a foundation beyond business and quick money-making schemes. In the long run, the distinction between degree and โ€œdiskarteโ€ poses important issues for sustainability and adaptability. The business world is fluid, and trends shift quickly. Influencers and their mentees who choose to rely only on โ€œdiskarteโ€ risk getting caught up in a tornado of altering algorithms, evolving audience preferences, and increasing competition.

The social media industry and business sector are not a monolith. Different niches and sectors in this field require diverse skill sets and expertise. While โ€œdiskarteโ€ is unquestionably valuable, certain sectors may require a deeper understanding than formal education, ensuring that people can traverse issues beyond the surface level.

Education offers a safety net by providing a diverse skill set that can serve as a firm basis even when unexpected obstacles arise. It provides individuals with the ability to critically evaluate information, adapt to new technology, and negotiate complicated professional landscapes, all of which lead to long-term success and resilience.

It needs to be understood that an educational degree might not exactly equate to success, but it does guarantee lifelong knowledge and experience that can shape a person's character and morality. To some degree, it also serves as credibility to anyone who has given conscious effort and time towards academics. It is a testament to one's commitment to mastering a certain field and as such, it transcends the echo-chambers of fleeting social media trends.

In celebration of Women's Month 2024, Ilocos Transport Cooperative offers free transportation to women, commuting from Laoag to Paoay via Batac, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. today.

In line with this, the "Libreng Sakay para sa Kababaihan" activity is conducted with the use of modern public utility jeepneys taking the Laoag-Batac-Paoay route, letting the women only write their names, addresses, and signatures as part of the documentation for this day's event.

This is done in honor of all the women in the community as they participate in supporting and empowering women in society.

Fall is a vision of broken dreams,
Endless sight of admiration or fright?
Luminous as moonlight is the eyes or so it seems.
Is this the fleeting nature of delight?
Xenodochial is what love is, from hindsight.

Just a friend, a stranger, or could be someone I knew,
Remarks this glimpse of February's hue.

For years, the Mariano Marcos State University College of Teacher Education (MMSU-CTE) has proudly held the brand of the Center for Teaching Excellence, a testament to the collective efforts of its stakeholders, including dedicated faculty and diligent students. However, recent concerns raised by students regarding the presence of bats on campus demand urgent attention.

The collegeโ€™s administrative building has become a โ€œhabitatโ€ for numerous bats, posing a significant challenge to the well-being of students who take their classes there. The presence of bats in the educational spaces compromises the safety and comfort of learners, hindering their ability to focus and thrive in their studies.

Studies have highlighted the potential health risks posed by bats to human beings. These creatures have leptospires in their kidneys, which are released in their urine, presenting a grave concern for students. Contact with bat urine, particularly through the eyes, nose, mouth, or open wounds, can facilitate the transmission of leptospirosis, a serious bacterial infection.

Additionally, the strong odor emanating from bat urine, similar to ammonia, can badly affect respiratory health, further hindering the studentโ€™s learning experience. The stinky smell of the bat waste can lead to risk to studentsโ€™ health, especially in their bodyโ€™s respiratory system. Furthermore, bat urine also gives discomfort to students because sometimes the waste can reach to their body and accessories, passing the odor to them. Bat urine are also acidic which can also damage the structutal beauty of the building.

Aside from leptospirosis, bats are known carriers of other viruses, including the Rabies, Nipah Virus and Marburg Virus, amplifying the health hazards associated with their presence. The risk of rabies and virus transmission cannot be overlooked, as bats possess sharp teeth capable of puncturing skin, increasing the likelihood of bites and potential infection.

It is vitally important to prioritize preventive measures to mitigate the risks associated with bat exposure. Avoiding direct contact with bats and handling them only with proper protection are essential steps in safeguarding student health and well-being. However, these measures alone may not be enough to address the pressing concerns raised by students.

This is the right time to take action. The student leaders must pay attention to amplify the voices of their peers and also advocate for the elimination of bats from the campus premises. As stakeholders in the college's legacy of excellence in education, students deserve a learning environment that not only prioritizes the delivery of quality education but also prioritizes its populationโ€™s safety and health condition.

On the other hand, bats deserve to be in their rightful habitat, where they can soar freely amidst trees, forests, and caves. Concerted efforts must be made, in coordination with relevant government agencies, to ensure their return to these natural environments. Only then can we truly appreciate and preserve the vital role bats play in our ecosystems.

Under the burden of unrequited love,
I pausedโ€”a moment that feels forever.
The stars witnessed my indifferent thoughts,
and I tasted the bitter truth: my heartfelt confession, unheard by the ears of the one I loved.

Everything seems paralyzed and controlled.
A hidden strength starts to show itself.
The love unreturned, need not be wasted.
It becomes the fire that warms the next dawn,
and the echo of endurance fills the hollows of my chest.

So, I gather my crushed pieces, wrap them with aspiration, and bear them onwards. For even in quietness, there is a melodyโ€”a song of toughness, a dance of restoration.

And as I walk away from the unfamiliar night, I find comfort in the echoes of...

Ryand Ugalde, the associate editor of SIRMATA, engaged second-year BSE English students of the College of Teacher Education (CTE) in a campus journalism workshop dubbed "Project Kayas: Intensive Training Writeshop on Campus Journalism" held at the CTEx Hall yesterday, February 26.

During the event, Ugalde shared his insights and experiences as he presented two topics focusing on news writing and feature writing. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of using angles in creating effective news and feature articles for the public.

At the end of the lecture, Ugalde showcased his recent documentary titled "Byukon" and encouraged the English major students to craft a feature article centering on various angles of the said documentary.

Organized by the English major students enrolled in ELANG 106: Campus Journalism, together with their adviser, Dr. Romel A. Pascua, the said writeshop aims to gear them with knowledge and skills in campus journalism through involving them in lecture and writing activities.

This is the first of the following workshop series to be sponsored by other English major students. Moreover, the upcoming series will also feature other outstanding journalists who are set to impart their expertise in the field of campus journalism.

Restrooms at the College of Teacher Education (CTE) serve as valuable facilities for pre-service teachers in maintaining proper hygiene and providing personal spaces. Despite established protocols emphasizing decorum inside the college restrooms, adherence has been deemed suboptimal.

In an era where education is evolving at an unprecedented pace, the proficiency of future teachers in the most fundamental aspects of daily life is coming under scrutiny. However, a concerning trend has emerged โ€“ students inside the college lack the seemingly basic act of restroom etiquettes.

Restrooms inside the college occasionally suffer from cleanliness issues, often caused by students. Improper disposal of used items like tissues and wipes in the restroom contributes to the problem. Additionally, the failure to flush toilets, whether due to forgetfulness or lack of consideration, creates an unpleasant experience for subsequent users. This is a disappointing reality, especially in a campus environment that trains and prepares future teachers. These behaviors not only compromise the overall hygiene of the restroom but also reflects a lack of communal responsibility.

As pre-service teachers, it is imperative that we promote the value of cleanliness within our campus by demonstrating proper utilization of our restrooms and adhering to its basic etiquettes. By maintaining the cleanliness of our restrooms, we are able to exemplify commendable behavior both within and outside the educational setting, which can significantly impact the development of values for the upcoming generation.

As mentioned in the Article XI, Section 2 and 3 of the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers, a teacher shall place premium upon self-respect and self-discipline, as well as maintain dignified personality that could serve as a model worthy of emulation by learners, peers, and others. Hence, these laws highlight the importance of self-respect and self-discipline in a teacher's personal behavior. Applying these principles to public restrooms, teachers can play a crucial role in instilling proper restroom etiquette among students. By having a dignified and respectful demeanor, educators serve as positive role models, influencing students to follow suit and contribute to the overall cleanliness and order of shared facilities

Maintaining proper restroom etiquette is a fundamental aspect of promoting a hygienic and comfortable environment. As future educators, incorporating restroom etiquette now should be treated as an important aspect of our training into becoming a quality educator.
