Very very sad to find out about this last night...

Listen to Sonic Research Labs tonight on WHRW at 10pm where we're sure to play some Flat Duo Jets

From the Romweber Family,

"It is our sad duty to inform the world that our beloved youngest brother John Michael Romweber II – you know him as Dexter -- died at home on Friday, Feb. 16, 2024. He was 57 years old, and found by his sister Monica. It is believed he died of natural causes; a medical exam is pending.
Singer, guitarist, artist and bon vivant, Dexter Romweber was one of the most acclaimed artists of the roots-rock underground, going back to his time with the Kamikazes. But the band that put him on the map was Flat Duo Jets, the guitar/drums duo he started in 1983 with Chris “Crow” Smith(and later with Tony Mayer on bass). While the Jets never broke through commercially, their fiery sturm and twang was a major influence on artists including the White Stripes, X, Cat Power and Neko Case.
After the Jets broke up in the late 1990s, Dexter played in a variety of acts including The New Romans and Dex Romweber Duo with his sister Sara. He released more than a dozen group and solo albums over the years, playing everything from wild-eyed rockabilly to Rachmaninoff-styled classical piano. His most recent album was "Good Thing Goin’,” released in 2023.
Romweber was preceded in death by his sister Sara; brothers Joe and Luke; and most recently his mother Sara.
We will have more to say soon, but ask for privacy at this time."

20 years ago today, “Six Days” was released. Still consistently one of my most streamed songs year after year. I remember piecing the remix together at the home studio of a former member of the Denver Broncos...super nice guy.

Robert Gordon passed away yesterday at the age of 75. He had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. Gordon pioneered the rockabilly revival of the late 1970s in downtown New York clubs before other acts like The Stray Cats followed suit. To mark his passing share a favorite rockabilly track from its earliest days in the 1950s or anything since. Corny will spin a set after 9 a.m. for the Question of the Day.

“That's one thing I learned from the Ramones: ‘Slam! There's that number... where's the next one?’ Because people are watching, people have got things to do! It's a busy world out there. Give it to them!” Joe Strummer.

Happy birthday, Johnny Ramone.

ON THIS DAY
Pixies released their fourth studio album, Trompe Le Monde, on this day, September 23rd, 1991 on 4AD in the United Kingdom and on Elektra Records in the United States. Recorded in Burbank, California, Paris and London, the album was produced by Gil Norton, and was Pixies' final studio album before their subsequent break-up two years later. Trompe le Monde is the last album to feature founding bassist Kim Deal.
The album name comes from the title of the first track, "Trompe le Monde", a French phrase meaning "Fool the World"

The Pixies were instrumental in influencing the career of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana and being the unwitting springboard for Nirvana's global monster that was Nevermind. It is therefore even more astonishing to realise that Pixies released their fourth and (then) final studio album, Trompe Le Monde – one day before Nirvana’s Nevermind which arrived 24th September 1991.

Trompe Le Monde has a distinctly harder edge than their previous releases, mirroring the growing dissension within the band's membership, while sacrificing none of the band's trademark pop sensibilities. The whole thing is buoyed along by a frantic rhythm; beneath the screaming, distorted guitars and Black Francis' surreal yelpings, one can faintly make out bassist Kim Deal's soothing harmonies and punchy rhythms holding the whole thing together.
