We visited Brookside Cemetery this weekend and came across the Paddock family gravesite. The size is immense (kids for scale), and it makes me wonder how they got the stone in place. There are so many beautiful stone structures and statues here, it’s one of my favorite places in town.

Hey history fans! I haven’t posted in a long time in part because of the status of our podcast and in part because does such a wonderful job sharing historical photos and stories of the north country on her Instagram feed. However, I wanted to share with everyone who still follows us these photos of the old Watertown fountain from Public Square.
I came across these when I first moved to the area several years ago, and it was one of the first history mysteries that engaged my curiosity. Although I’ve learn a lot since then, I never knew the back story of these strange structures, hidden in the overgrowth at Thompson Park.
I’m happy to report I learned more about these (finally) from Baylor’s Instagram feed. Of course, I had to grab my phone and see if I could still find them. I did (as you can see)! And I wanted to share my discover with you.
Please visit on Instagram to find out more about their past. And you can read the Watertown Daily Times tomorrow to read Baylor’s column in print as well.

I’m November 1946, youth in the north country present their donation of $11.50 to the Community Chest Drive. They are (from left) Barbara Farr, 14; the representative of the Community Chest, Helen Williams; Thelma Jones, 17, president of the children’s group donating the money; and Pat Marshall, 14, vice president.
If you know anyone in the photo that still lives in the area, please feel free tag or share. 😊

Mrs. John S. Martin measures a Christmas Cactus given to her as a 5-inch shoot on her honeymoon in Casterland on Nov 18, 1913. Since that day, which was 39 years before this 1952 photo was taken, the plant had grown to be a meter across.

The Dry Hill Base Officer’s Wives Club meets in September 1957. The Dry Hill Air Defense Command Radar Station on Swan Road in Watertown closed in the 1990s, but I’m loving these vintage looks.

Hersal Z. Charlton, retired Air Force Sergeant and father of five children, this morning demonstrated in front of Arsenal Street School to protest what he charges is a "prejudiced decision" on the part of officials of the General Brown School District to refuse education for two of his sons, who are re****ed.

Hersal Charlton and two of his sons picket outside the public school on Arsenal Street in May 1969 in protest of their being denied access to the public school in Watertown.
According to an article that ran with the pictures in the Watertown Daily Times, the superintendent said the boys had moved outside the school boundaries. Their father argued the two boys had been denied an education because of their intellectual disabilities.
The two boys had a third identical triplet brother not part of the protest (not sure why). The three of them are all in a photo on the sign.
I don’t know the outcome of the protest, but it seems Mr. Charlton cared a lot about his children, and I have to admire him standing up for what he believed was right.

Here’s a shoutout to the school bus drivers in the north country who transport students to school in rain, heat and snow.

Cesare Marando, of Massena, was photographed in July 1961 weighing a bunch of bananas at his store on Main Street. Marando began operating his fruit, vegetable and grocery stand since 1904, when he was just 16. At age 73, he was the oldest businessman on Main Street "in terms of years of carrying on his business," the newspaper stated at the time.
Recognize any of the items for sale on the shelves? To***co products, shoe shine and Scotch tape make up some of the stores wares.
