Bellmawr placed #8 this year in the rankings.

Each year, South Jersey Magazine "celebrates our local communities and recognizes them for collectively impacting the quality of life in this wonderful place we call home."

The rankings "were formulated using data from the New Jersey State Police, the New Jersey Department of Education, and the stateโ€™s Division of Local Government Services. Using a weighted formula, average property values and taxes, combined with crime incidents reported per 1,000 residents and high school performance numbers consisting of average SAT scores, graduation rates and more."

Moorestown was named the Top Town overall.

Haddonfield is the Top Town in Camden County and Harrison Township was ranked first in Gloucester County.

Sunday was a big day for Chiefs, and not just because Kansas City was victorious in Super Bowl LVIII.

Five dogs were also adopted from the Burlington County Animal Shelter during the shelterโ€™s Ultimate โ€œTailโ€-gate Party and Open House, among them Chief, a 10-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix who had been the shelterโ€™s longest dog resident.

Chief, who was surrendered to the shelter in June 2021 and then again in January 2022, was adopted by Rose Marie Ragone. The Williamstown resident visited the shelter after seeing Chief on a television news broadcast about the pregame party.

The event was hosted by the Burlington County Animal Shelter in partnership with the County Commissioners and the Friends of the Burlington County Animal Shelter. It featured games, food, meet-and-greets with the dogs and cats and live-stream of the Puppy Bowl.

โ€œOur Board was rooting for Chief to find his forever home on Sunday and we were thrilled to learn that he was adopted by someone who was willing to open up her home and her heart to this loveable dog,โ€ said Burlington County Commissioner Deputy Director Dan Oโ€™Connell, the liaison to the animal shelter. โ€œWe want to thank Rose Marie and all the other residents who came to the shelter and adopted or stopped by to spend time with the animals. Events like Sundayโ€™s Super Bowl Tailgate Party bring more visibility to our shelter and the amazing pets that reside there. Visitors not only got to meet and interact with the dogs and cats but also our incredible shelter staff and volunteers who provide such wonderful care and go the extra mile to find these pets homes. Thanks to them and everyone who visited Sunday and helped make this open house a super success.

For those who missed Sundayโ€™s pregame party, thereโ€™s still plenty of opportunities to help support the shelter and the animals that reside there.

Adopters and foster families are still needed. Available animals are listed online at https://www.co.burlington.nj.us/1446/Available-for-Adoption. Adoption fees are waived all year long for senior residents, veterans and military families.

Oโ€™Connell, who adopted his dog Bingo from the Burlington County Animal Shelter after fostering the hound for several months, encouraged more seniors to come to the shelter and consider adopting or fostering a senior pet.

โ€œMy dog Bingo is a senior pet and a wonderful companion. Adopting him was one of the best decisions Iโ€™ve made,โ€ said Oโ€™Connell.

Residents who are unable to adopt or foster can also help out by following the shelterโ€™s social media and spreading the word about the available dogs and cats.

Animal lovers can also volunteer their time to help with shelter tasks, make financial donations or give the shelter needed supplies. For more information, including a wish list of needed items, visit https://www.co.burlington.nj.us/168/Animal-Shelter.

Sharing from the Borough of Bellmawr:

NOTICE TO BELLMAWR WATER CUSTOMERS

Due to a mechanical malfunction, the Bellmawr Water Department has temporarily shut down the Warren Avenue Treatment Plant.

While the system is being repaired our customers will be serviced through the Leaf Avenue and Bell Road Treatment Plant.

As a result, you may experience lower water pressure than you are accustomed to.

We appreciate your patience while we correct the issue.

Out of an abundance of caution upon discovering the malfunction our water was immediately tested.

The results found the water to be safe and in compliance with all NJDEP drinking water standards.

As the region braces for another winter storm that is set to begin early Friday morning, the Camden Countyโ€™s Department of Public Works (DPW) is working to prepare the countyโ€™s 1,200 lane miles of road ahead of time.

โ€œWe have another round of snow and sleet headed our way and in anticipation, our crews have been preparing equipment and monitoring the forecast to make sure theyโ€™re ready to clear the snow and sleet and treat the roadwaysโ€ Commissioner Al Dyer, liaison to the DPW. โ€œWe have our salt trucks loaded up, the plows are ready to go and our tree removal equipment is in working order to clear any debris that may result from this weather.โ€

Light snow will begin falling early Friday which will then turn steadier and occasionally moderate at times.

The gradual accumulation can turn more manageable during the middle of the day as temps increase near freezing.

Snow will turn lighter then taper to showers in the late evening on Friday and a cold night will freeze up any wet or slushy spots.

Altogether, we are expecting between 2 to 4 inches of snow.

โ€œAs always, we are encouraging residents to stay home if they do not have to be anywhere but if you must drive, please do so cautiously as there is always the possibility for slick spots,โ€ Dyer said. โ€œAnd our crews head out to treat the roads, remember to always leave at least six car lengths behind our vehicles while they work and move any cars off the street and into a driveway. Please also remember that it is illegal in New Jersey to plow or shovel snow from private property into roadways.โ€

At the public works complex in Lindenwold, more than 100 pieces of equipment are available to keep county roadways passable.

When the weather becomes treacherous, personnel will be dispatched to 12 winter maintenance districts to salt and plow 1,200 lane miles of roadways across Camden County. ๏ฟผ

The countyโ€™s response plan calls for crews to be dispatched only to the zones where they are needed.

In the event the weather causes isolated power outages, please remember to immediately call your utility company so they can identify the location and coordinate crews to restore your power.

Residents need to be extra cognizant of any power failures.

The Camden County Health Department is closely monitoring a confirmed case of measles in the county. An investigation is being conducted to identify contacts and all locations the subject visited while infectious. The source of the infection is unknown.

โ€œWe are working with the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) to investigate this situation,โ€ said Camden County Health Officer Paschal Nwako. โ€œGiven the serious consequences of measles and the ease with which it can be spread, we will be engaged in a large investigative effort centered on locating and ensuring the immune status of those individuals who may have been in contact with this patient. In the meantime, we urge all residents to be vigilant of symptoms and to make sure they are up to date on their MMR vaccine because that is the best way we can protect ourselves and others from this disease.โ€

Measles transmission is primarily spread from person to person through respiratory droplets. Airborne transmission has been documented in closed areas for up to two hours after a person with measles has occupied the area.

Because measles is very contagious it is important to identify anyone who may have been exposed that does not have immunity to the disease.

Potentially exposed individuals, if infected, could develop symptoms as late as February 2, 2024.

Two doses of MMR vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing measles; one dose is about 93% effective.

The Camden County Health Department is working diligently with our healthcare partners to identify and notify anyone who has had exposure to this case.

A Camden County resident who was exposed to measles visited two healthcare facilities on Jan. 5 and Jan.8.

The Camden County Division of Weights and Measures has received numerous phone calls and complaints regarding a possible fuel contamination issue at a Conoco gas station located at 1901 Admiral Wilson Boulevard in Camden City after winter storm Finn moved through the area on Wednesday.

Upon receiving the complaints, the division immediately opened an investigation last night, and the division is awaiting test results to come back.

During the investigation, numerous vehicles were seen broken down nearby on the side of the road with several others being towed off of the westbound lane of the boulevard.

โ€œWe are monitoring this situation very closely and working quickly to get to the bottom of it,โ€ Commissioner Virginia Betteridge, liaison to the health department. โ€œWe have teams investigating the possibility of water contamination in the underground storage tanks due to flooding caused by the storm and we will continue to update the public as needed. In the meantime, if you believe your car was impacted, please contact the Camden County or Camden City Division of Weights and Measures.โ€
