MEXICO CITY VALENTINE'S KISS CONTEST: Thirty couples gathered in Mexico City on Wednesday (2/14) to participate in a Valentine's themed kiss contest. Last year's winning couple took home the title after locking lips for more than four hours. The competition offered a cash prize of 4,000 pesos, about 235 US dollars, to the couple who could kiss the longest.

SKELETON PANDA SEA SQ**RT: A new species of sea creature that has a distinctive skeleton-like body structure and black spots that resemble a panda has been discovered in Japan. The "skeleton panda sea sq**rt," which is what some Japanese termed the creature, measures two centimeters in length. On February 1, Japanese researchers published a paper about the species declaring its official scientific name as Clavelina ossipandae, which means "little bottle," "skeleton," and "panda-like appearance."

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY: Animals enjoyed heart-shaped treats and items in celebration of Valentine's Day at the Brookfield Zoo in Illinois recently. The zoo said the grey seals and bottlenose dolphins chomped on their ice and gelatin treats, while Sasha the Amur leopard devoured a raw meat heart. The zoo also said Jasper the pink cockatoo tossed the heart-shaped paper cutouts rather than eating the sliced strawberries he was given.

PARKLAND REMEMBRANCE: Elementary school students formed a giant heart on a field in Coral Springs, Florida, on Wednesday (2/14). The heart was formed to mark the six-year anniversary since the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The school district says it has become a tradition since the tragedy, with different schools forming the heart each year.

TO AMERICA WITH LOVE: The White House unveiled its Valentine's Day decorations on Wednesday (2/14). The "Valentine to the Country" installation featured a large wooden envelope with a message from first lady Jill Biden and large sweethearts painted with messages of gratitude, love, and optimism. The White House said Valentine's Day is one of the first lady's favorite holidays.

PUPPY BOWL: Team Paws and Team Claws battled it out on the field during the first ever Music City Puppy Bowl at the Nashville Zoo in Tennessee on Sunday (2/11). Social media star Doug the Pug kicked off gametime by throwing a plush toy onto the field. Team Paws was declared the winner, having dragged a toy into the endzone the most amount of times. The event was organized in partnership with the Nashville Humane Association. All 10 furry athletes, and one cheerleader were adopted by new families.

OTTER-LY LOVELY: Some North American river otters were seen playing around with frozen "hearts" at the Milwaukee County Zoo in Wisconsin on February 1. The zoo said the hearts were filled with fish and turned red with animal-safe food coloring. The zoo also added that the otters are intelligent, and they know to push the ice into the water so it thaws faster, and they can get the fish inside sooner.

OLYMPIC MEDALS UNVEILED: Olympic Games organizers unveiled the medals athletes will be awarded at this year's Olympic Games in Paris - and they include an iconic piece of the city. Each of the gold, silver, and bronze medals include a hexagonal piece of iron taken from the Eiffel Tower. The chunks of metal were stripped of paint, polished and varnished for their second life. The medals are also stamped with “Paris 2024” and the Olympic Games logo.

PANDA PARTY: Panda cubs were seen squirming around as they made their public debut at two Giant Panda reserves in China on Tuesday (2/6). In all, 34 panda babies were born in 2023. The celebration marked the Lunar New Year, according to the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda.

HANGING PIANO: Swiss pianist Alain Roche played a piano hanging vertically in the air in Munich, Germany, on Monday (2/5). The pianist was suspended nearly 33 feet with the help of a crane while playing music as part of his "Piano Vertical" art project. The musician said he plans to play every day before sunrise for 182 days, from winter to summer solstice.

CLAW MACHINE KID: Police rescued three-year-old Ethan Hopper who managed to get himself stuck inside a "Hello Kitty" toys claw machine in Brisbane, Australia, on January 27. The boy entered through the machine's prize dispenser shoot. After his family and officers coached the toddler into moving into a far corner, officers broke the glass, and picked up the boy safely.

CANINE CARNIVAL: Dogs in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, dressed to the nines in costumes for Carnival festivities recently. The canine carnival is a yearly event that runs alongside other celebrations and elaborate parades in Rio. An estimated $971.55 million will be earned during the celebrations, according to the Rio Tourism Company.

MONARCH MIGRATION: Swarms of monarch butterflies filled the skies of a forest in Mexico on Tuesday (1/23). The butterflies travel up to 2,000 miles from the U.S. and Canada to escape the cold temperatures. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the species as "vulnerable."

WATER RESCUE: Crews rescued a woman who was stuck on top of an overturned car on a flooded road for 15 hours in Livermore, California, on Tuesday (1/23). The California Highway Patrol's Golden Gate Division Air Operations said they believe the woman tried to drive across a fast-moving creek in the rain, which caused her vehicle to overturn. After a camper in the area alerted authorities, the driver was airlifted to safety.

LARGEST ICE SKATING RINK: The world's largest natural ice skating rink reopened in Canada for the first time in two years on Sunday (1/21). Rideau Canal Skateway opened over 50 years ago, is 4.9 miles long, and is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Ottawa. The National Capital Commission (NCC) said the canal didn't open to skating because of a lack of ice caused by climate change.

BABY BONDING: A newborn western lowland gorilla was seen cuddling and bonding with its mom at the London Zoo. The zoo announced that mom Mjukuu gave birth early Wednesday (1/17) after a 17-minute labor. The zoo also said that the number of western lowland gorillas has declined by 60% in the last 25 years.

These denim sculptures were created by Cameroonian artist Afran. The exhibit is part of a biannual men's fashion trade show and will be on display at Florence's De'Medici Museum until February 15th.
