STEREOSCOPE magazine Created by St Andrew's University students, S T E R E O S C O P E magazine serves as a platform to s From our small town, such greatness has emerged.

STEREOSCOPE magazine is a student magazine that celebrates photography in St Andrews while raising awareness about the photographs of the University's special collections. Working with the support of the University's Art History Department and Library Special Collections, the magazine is produced annually with an accompanying exhibition. Each issue explores a particular theme and features articles

as well as photographs. The longstanding tradition of photography in St Andrews started with the historic resident Sir David Brewster, inventor of the stereoscope. Brewster's correspondence with William Henry Fox Talbot, the inventor of the calotype, established the town as an epicenter of early photography. St Andrews still plays a role in developing the history of photography; our university holds one of the largest and most important collections of historic Scottish photography and - following in Brewster's footsteps- our student body continues to make photographic headway. We have chosen to name our magazine S T E R E O S C O P E in honour of Brewster's dynamic contributions. Like the instrument which provides its viewer with a dual-perspective, our S T E R E O S C O P E aims to provide you with views to both the past and the present. It is this wealth of incredible material that we celebrate within our pages. More information can be found on our page (linked below):

Where most run from rot, we step closer.
Where memory lives, the next morning, dead.
Ferment is what festers and bathes.
Sauerkraut, sunken-Sundays, skin.
Ferment is golden joinery.
Chrysalis, combat, child-birth.
Steak and s*x and regret.
Beeswax.
Line–-sentence. Language. Land.
Ferment is to compress– you, effervescent with everything which makes you human and everything which makes you alone.
To crave what bubbles, then burns. To find it sweet.
To shove hope into your mouth at supper.
Allow embrace to become you. Your heart is my limb. Your soul, my spine.
How can I witness my own decay? Why do I plan for it?
Still, let's give ode to life.
We are only ever museums of forget.
To believe in every dark corner, call a jury on light.
You destroy but you adore. You animate, then inanimate.
Time is a blessing of change.
What will you do with it? Nurture it? Marinate in it? What has it done to you already? How have you developed? What have you lost?

Scran. Grub. Mess.
Nosh. Chow. Munch.
Scran is fast.
Choke it down. Gobble it up. Gorge yourself.
Under the table, grasping at Gram’s crumbs,
Do you remember when you loved that stuff? Second servings without shame?
and “did you know you can squeeze an egg without breaking it?”
Can you capture memories like strawberry preserves? Or do they spoil in the ice box?
Can you photograph feast? Does a sandwich have staccato? Can you alliterate American pie? What is the language of the larder? Wash your hands and set the table with a pen and paper.
We know you want cheesy chips
No, you need them.
You’re stopped in your tracks. You know that smell-
It’s one of the trillion the human nose can detect.
Give us your famous midnight recipe, stained and smudged.

Tell us your secret ingredient,
We’re hungry.
