The Spills Grill

- Kitted out head to foot in Great Northern at the Granny party (including un**es)

- Fanboyed over Petracca & Great Northern liking the Battlers’ photo (You’re welcome for the free advertising GN – how ‘bout following us?)

- Griped about the lack of show reels for retiring AFL players and having to watch some dude walking around the city singing (ummm famous musician Mike Brady who wrote “Up there Cazaly” …. respect please!)

The Battler’s ponder where it all went wrong for the doggies and suspect it had something to do with Caleb Daniel (1.68m) throwing Gawny (2.08m) into the fence and the 16 subsequent goals kicked.

The confetti angels contemplate the first thing they would do if they won the big game, and Spills poses the question “Who plays Christian Petracca in a movie?” (Duh…no brainer…either Josh Duhamel or Gerard Butler and Jason Momoa for Gawny…just saying!)

The Battler of the week was delisted twice, has done two ACL’s and was drafted three times. Guess who?

Backyard Battlers EP 5: Simon Black

This week's podcast has dropped and here's what you missed!

The Goat Squad banter with their former teacher/mentor/coach from the Academy of the same name as Brisbane Lions great, Simon Black. Played for 16 years with the Lions who took a premiership hat trick (nobody talks about ‘04), part of the fab four, a killer midfield combo, winner of a Brownlow, a Norm Smith and inducted into the hall of fame in 2020, is there anything Blacky didn’t achieve in his AFL career?

With Granny fever building, Blacky recalls the roller coaster of emotions of previous GF’s, the speed of the ball, bodies flying around like a pinball, the ferocity of the contest and how privileged he felt to be part of it. The OG, he reckons “Big moments make up a lot of the big games and if you can win more of the big moments than not, that goes a long way to winning the game!” (Note to self)

Questioned about his stint on Survivor, Blacky talks of how he lost 9kg’s in 42 days, loved life without a mobile, fancied himself with a beard, is still filthy about his blindside and would do it all again in a heartbeat!

The Battlers give their zero credibility Granny predictions, discuss the Peanut of the week and surprise nobody with their Norm Smith votes.

Backyard Battlers EP 4 - Gary O'Donnell & Nathan Clarke

Gary O’Donnell, ex Essendon, AFL royalty with Aussie rules lineage that stretches back to the 19th century when the Rankin’s ruled Geelong, and all-round nice guy joins the Backyard Battlers this week, along with Nathan Clarke, also all-round nice guy, but with less AFL quals.

Clarkey, ex Brisbane Lions, reminisces about why he didn’t get further in his AFL career and suspects that his NEAFL motto as captain coach, when losing – “Kick torps, take hangers, start fights” may have had something to do with it.

Gaz tells the Battlers how it took more than 50 Reserves games to make his debut, how being a Collingwood 6-footer (yep, that's a thing) didn’t impact detrimentally on his game and how he loves the exhilaration and despair of a close GF! (like, who doesn’t, unless your team loses of course?)
