Born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1979.
Moved to Barbados in 1984 and experienced his formative years on the island until emigrating to Canada in 2005 in the pursuit of music.
Growing up in Barbados was a very enriching experience for Gustavo. The rugged, natural landscapes, along with the deep colonial heritage, provided exposure to all walks of life, expanding on an even broader music horizon.
Embracing the guitar during the Seattle Grunge movement of the mid 90s, Gustavo joined the thriving music scene with his fellow bandmates during that time. Drawing their inspiration from the likes of in Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and The Smashing Pumpkins, Gustavo started to build on his position as the band’s Sound Engineer.
Shortly thereafter, the band started gravitating towards heavier bands such as early Metallica, early Megadeth, Sepultura, Machine Head, Korn, Slipknot, Rage Against the Machine and of course Pantera. During this phase Gus discovered Tool and NIN “these artists quickly imprinted themselves on me indelibly.” Say’s Gustavo De Beauville of his deepest music inspirations.
Performing metal on a Caribbean island had its limitations, and realistically, to pursue heavy music seriously, Gustavo felt that North America was the only way to have a solid chance.
In 2005 Gustavo left Barbados to study Audio Engineering at O.I.A.R.T. in London, Ontario.
“OIART introduced me to music for picture and composing for visuals. This showed me there were definitely-more outlets for music than just playing in a band.
I remember getting coursework that asked students to enhance a movie scene with ADR and Foley and I was the only person to compose original music for it. It just felt natural to me and the boldness of the move compelled the instructors to show that film project at our graduation as an example of thinking outside the box.” Recalls Gustavo.
After completing the audio engineering course in London, Gustavo moved to Calgary, Albert to start work as a serious Sound Engineer.
In 2009 Gustavo began recording the music for his band’s first album titled “13 Arcane Hymns” “Making that record was a lot of fun but the personality dynamics and toll of performing metal music live was not for me. I much preferred the controlled environment of my recording studio. Our album won best production at the Alberta Metal awards the following year.” Say’s Gustavo.
Around this time, Gustavo started reaching out and collaborating with independent directors on small projects and rediscovering his love for film and video games. Artists like Clint Mansell, Jesper Kyd, Hans Zimmer, Michael McCann, Thomas Bergersen and Mick Gordon truly became his music inspirations and professional benchmarks.
“If you’re going to do something, study the best and do it right.” cautions Gustavo.
In 2016 was when he started branching into the industry, first working as a Foley recordist, and then in post-production studios doing SFX, Gustavo entered in to the realm of soundtrack production while working for independent films in Calgary.
Ruminating on his own approach to creating music, Gustavo offers these words “In terms of my approach to production I like slick and polished mixes. They need to stand shoulder to shoulder with the highest of industry standards. I have no problem playing a guitar part 40 times in order to nail the correct emotion on the track. I always keep in mind that once something is committed to tape it’s there forever, so it better be exactly the way you wanted it.”
