Tachanka films is a Do-It-Yourself documetantary film making collective currently based of out Belgrade, Serbia. At the moment, we are working on a feature documentary film about an emerging underground Roma hip hop scene in Serbia and the Balkans. Our goal with this movie is to show a less known side of the Romani of South East Europe. For the past year, we’ve been following around a number of e
merging underground Roma rappers. The film will feature a glimpse into the personal and creative lives of these artists as they face an often uphill battle to not only make music, but to try and live a normal life in spite of racism and growing economic insecurity in Europe today. What also struck us was how much of the lyrical content has to do with countering mainstream views about Roma people with topics like racism, police harassment, deportation from the West and corrupt politicians. Of course, it wouldn't be hip hop without some ego boosting rhymes and beats and some electrifying live performances; we got that too! We don’t wish to make a movie where we speak for the Roma, but rather we want to provide a platform for their message to reach a broader audience.
