After decades of on and off storytelling with DFS, we have built up a lot more ideas for stories than we will likely ever get to tell. One reason can be timelyness. We ditched an idea based around Survivor and Big Brother because by the time we might have gotten it done, they were no longer as relevent.
We THOUGHT we knew what the story after the Bounty Hunters story was going to be, but by the time we reached now, our ideas were no where near as weird as the things we were trying to make fun of. Namely, Donald Trump.
Alex and Walter were next off to the McDisney Sphere. A theme park built around a star run by McDisney one of the few Galactic corporations left. We were looking to poke fun at a lot of stuff but as we came close to being able to actually do it, the real world had gotten far stranger. We dreamed up Trump as McRonald Donald years before his run for president the first time. Now? with where we are? Nu uh. We can't top that. And then he goes and actually pulls a stunt IN a McDoanlds? We're out!

But it's still out there in the DFS Universe and maybe someday they'll visit.

Luckily we had other fish to fry. Or shrimp.

You'll see.

For now, what might have been...

Here is this week’s Inkober-inspired DFS riff which for today is the prompt - UNCHARTED. This was an easy one as both Chris and Jeff are big fans of the video game series Uncharted by Naughty Dog Studios.

We've been looking back at who influenced us, literary and comic wise, but today we wanted to share our comedic influences. This isn't an exhaustive list, but it's a pretty good overview of the people who made us laugh and shaped our sense of humour.
Growing up in Southern Ontario Sunday morning TV was a wasteland with the exception of CBC who showed old lack and white comedies. We had a weekly diet of Laurel and Hardy, Stooges, Marx Brothers and more. Jeff leaned toward the Stooges while Chris was a Marx fan. (and he liked the Marx Brothers as well.)
Warner Brothers cartoons were a staple and we've even recently done a nod to Looney Tunes backgrounds in the bounty hunters story.
Every GenX nerd went through a Monty Python phase especially in Canada where we got a lot of British media.
A trio of physical comedians that were a big influence were Carol Burnett and her sketch show, John Ritter in his role as Jack Tripper on Three's Company and John Byner's sketch show Bizarre. All three were brilliant physical comedians, doing pratfalls, crashing through walls and all manner of physical gags.
The Muppets hold a special place, combining many of the elements of the other comedians in Henson's unique puppet humour.
M.A.S.H showed how comedy could also address more serious ideas while still being screamingly funny and was an introduction to satire.
And finally George Carlin, who Jeff introduced with his early silly comedy albums and then into his more biting later career.

Do these make sense? Can you see the influence on DFS? Who made you laugh growing up?

In case anyone was curious, here's the first week of Chris' Inktober pieces. His slant is famous faces inspired by the prompt word, done as close to 30 minutes as possible to push to work quickly and focus on just capturing the person and keeping the inking spontaneous and loose.

While Jeff can’t manage to commit to doing Inktober in full like Chris, he will work on some that stand out as fun DFS interpretations throughout the month beginning with the prompt - TREK. It is no surprise that the first thing to come to mind was the triumvirate of Kirk/Spock/McCoy from classic Star Trek.

When we collected the first13 issues of the DFS minicomic into a soft cover collected volume, (a rare thing for a minicomic in those days) we waned to make it as much of a proper book as possible. That included having a dedication page.
The dedication was vague, referring to Eddy, the Lad and the Little Grey Guy. This was us wanting to thank people who had been another huge set of influences on us.
Eddy is Eddy the Lump, and if you saw the earlier post you will see how much the character has been a part of the DFS story. But Eddy is more than a character. Eddie is based on our long time friend Heath, and HE has been a big influence on US. Chris met Heath in grade one. Heath was the person who exposed Chris to the idea of making your own, hand drawn comics as well as comics in general as Heath was a big reader and collector. A few grades later, Chris and Jeff met and Heath became a friend of Jeff as well. Heath and his Dad started a comics shop from their house and later became the local comics shop for the town we all grew up in. There was much drawing and talk about comics and the first comic Chris and Jeff ever made also included Heath. More on that another time, but the point is, Heath was the biggest catalyst in getting Chris and Jeff into making comics.
The Lad refers to Lethargic Lad, lead character in a mini comic anthology created by a group of Sheridan College students and one professor in the animation department where Jeff would attend post secondary school. . Seeing the way these creators published, shared and promoted their work showed us the path to turning our ideas into a viable comic to be shared with the world. So thanks to Greg, Steve, John, Luc and Brian for the guidance. (Brian even helped with our first collection, airbrushing the gradient on the cover)
And finally the Little Grey Guy, aka the Aardvark. Started in the 70's as a funny animal Conan parody comic, Cerebus would go on to be a 6000 page story over 300 issues created by two people and totally self published. A remarkable feat and done by someone just an hour down the road from where Jeff and Chris grew up. Cerebus set the bar for what was possible, not only as a small comic creator, but what was possible in the medium. Cerebus' creator Dave Sim was also very supportive of DFS over the years and helped bolster our young egos.
So there you go, three more of our early inspirations. Thanks again to all of them.

Slow Horses is an excellent TV series on Apple TV+ that features Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb, the head of a department of rejected MI5 agents. To celebrate the start of the 4th season here is a DFS riff depicting Alex and Walter showing up as new recruits. Because, of course, they’d fit right in.

In celebration of the 49th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival, here is an image of Alex and Walter on Festival Street. Since 2004, Jeff has attended TIFF each year. So he will temporarily put his drawing tools down to watch films from around the world throughout the 10-day festival.

Looking at things that were an influence on the creation of DFS, we turn to an early lesser known work by Milk & Cheese creator Evan Dorkin . During the Black & White boom of the 80's Chris came across a comic called Pirate Corps.
comedy, scifi, adventure, chase scenes etc. All the things that would go into DFS. PC changed names to Hectic Planet and became more slice of life and the Evan branched out into other humour comics. But those initial issues were definitely an inspiration, especially during the rise of Indy and self published comics in the 80s.
Wjen Chris met Evan years later, he not only thanked him for the inspiration, but got to purchase the original cover artwork for issue 2 of Corps.

With the start of Fan Expo Canada in Toronto this weekend Chris and Jeff decided to take a stroll down memory lane and share some pics from their early years at comic book conventions. Before the days of the internet and social media, they were an important part of getting the word out about Dressed for Success.

Some photos show our fellow comics creators Greg and Stephen of the comic book Xeno’s Arrow.

One of the characters who has been after Alex and Walter throughout the entire series of DFS is the crimelord Eddy the Lump. Lovingly based on an old school friend (who we are still close with to this day) Eddy makes another appearance in the final 20 pages of the Bounty Hunters storyline. Here is a sampling of panels where the character pops up.

My current TV obsession is the FX show The Bear. I admit to being late to the party but I am so glad I decided to join in. While watching it I had the idea of creating an image putting Alex and Walter in the roles of Ritchie and Carmy. I can’t wait for season 4.

As we look back on our influences for DFS there is no question that Douglas Adams and specifically his The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series had a huge impact on us and our work. Douglas' writing style, both his stories and actual writing voice are infused throughout Alex and Walter's adventures. The story of two mismatched everymen trying to make their way in a often dangerous and regularly silly galaxy could easily describe either series.
If you've never read Douglas' work you are missing out. Besides Hitchhikers, try and find his book Last Chance to See. It's non-fiction, a collaborative book about endangered species made hilarious and fascinating due to Douglas writing.
From a personal position, I've always felt a kinship with Douglas' attitude towards deadlines. “I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.” - Chris

Going back to issue 20 of the mini-comics run, Chris and Jeff introduced the lineup of Bounty Hunters that would eventually be on the hunt for Alex and Walter in the current webcomics storyline that can be read on our website. Here is a picture of their first appearance and a sneak peek at a panel from the final 20 pages of the story to be released soonish.

While we're being all nostalgic we thought it would be appropriate to look at some of the art and artists whose work inspired the creation of Dressed For Success. One of the biggest influences was the comic art of Phil Foglio. His visual style, creative expressions and hilarious work on things like What's New with Phil & Dixie in the old Dragon magazine and his work illustrating and then adapting Robert Asprin's Myth Adventures novels were very much a part of DFS's DNA. And today Phil is still inspiring as he continues to create his Girl Genius webcomic. Snazzy hats off to Phil!

As we plan and prepare for new stories to be released with our intrepid heroes Alex and Walter, it is hard to believe that in 1991, 33 years ago this month, Egesta Comics published the first issue of Dressed for Success.

In the beginning, our covers were riffs on movie posters.

Who would have thought that a silly notion about two movies opening on the same weekend this summer that were so diametrically opposed to one another would strike up such a powerful online phenomenon as Barbenheimer? As well as having that translate into big bucks at the box office! Both Chris and Jeff took part in the Barbenheimer experience and to celebrate we our doing our own tip of the hat with our characters Alex and Walter looking to find some new threads.
