When we collected the first13 issues of the DFS minicomic into a soft cover collected volume, (a rare thing for a minicomic in those days) we waned to make it as much of a proper book as possible. That included having a dedication page.
The dedication was vague, referring to Eddy, the Lad and the Little Grey Guy. This was us wanting to thank people who had been another huge set of influences on us.
Eddy is Eddy the Lump, and if you saw the earlier post you will see how much the character has been a part of the DFS story. But Eddy is more than a character. Eddie is based on our long time friend Heath, and HE has been a big influence on US. Chris met Heath in grade one. Heath was the person who exposed Chris to the idea of making your own, hand drawn comics as well as comics in general as Heath was a big reader and collector. A few grades later, Chris and Jeff met and Heath became a friend of Jeff as well. Heath and his Dad started a comics shop from their house and later became the local comics shop for the town we all grew up in. There was much drawing and talk about comics and the first comic Chris and Jeff ever made also included Heath. More on that another time, but the point is, Heath was the biggest catalyst in getting Chris and Jeff into making comics.
The Lad refers to Lethargic Lad, lead character in a mini comic anthology created by a group of Sheridan College students and one professor in the animation department where Jeff would attend post secondary school. . Seeing the way these creators published, shared and promoted their work showed us the path to turning our ideas into a viable comic to be shared with the world. So thanks to Greg, Steve, John, Luc and Brian for the guidance. (Brian even helped with our first collection, airbrushing the gradient on the cover)
And finally the Little Grey Guy, aka the Aardvark. Started in the 70's as a funny animal Conan parody comic, Cerebus would go on to be a 6000 page story over 300 issues created by two people and totally self published. A remarkable feat and done by someone just an hour down the road from where Jeff and Chris grew up. Cerebus set the bar for what was possible, not only as a small comic creator, but what was possible in the medium. Cerebus' creator Dave Sim was also very supportive of DFS over the years and helped bolster our young egos.
So there you go, three more of our early inspirations. Thanks again to all of them.
