The Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce is seeking a friendly Office Assistant to join their office in Houghton, MI. This is an exceptional opportunity for an individual who enjoys working with community members and tourists alike to share all that the Keweenaw has to offer, while gaining experience in customer service and administrative functions.

What we offer.
● $15 - $17 per hour starting pay
● Part-time Monday – Friday 10am – 3pm, with some schedule flexibility available
● Occasional nights and weekends, as needed, for events.

What you will do.
● Accounting/Recordkeeping. Maintain financial records for Chamber Board, process payments and receipts, make bank deposits, and generate billing invoices.
● Administrative Functions. Prioritize and manage organizational records, files, minutes, prepare meeting agendas, attend meetings, handle routine inquiries, keep Chamber office tidy, organized, and supplies maintained.
● Chamber Board Support. Support the Chamber Board, as needed.

What we are looking for.
● Required Education – High School graduate or higher.
● At least 2 years’ experience in customer service, office administration, or equivalent.
● General knowledge of accounting with proficiency in QuickBooks preferred.
● Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
● Strong word processing and spreadsheet skills (MS Word, Excel, Google Docs, Google Sheets)
● Experience with various office equipment and ability to learn new computer programs. (fast learner)
● Detail-oriented with the ability to complete projects independently.
● A positive team player that supports the collaborative process.

In so many ways, we only achieve any measure of personal and professional success from the collaboration we enjoy from our partners here in the Keweenaw. We tumbled downstate immediately after Sauna Week editing so I could present at the Michigan Farmers Market Association 2024 conference. Working with From the Ground Farmers Market Collective these past years has allowed us to grow and experiment in the utility of social media, and MIFMA allowed me to share some of that knowledge and experience.

The most poignant moment of note was speaking with the market managers, organizers, and volunteers who attended the session. I see struggles and frustrations with the medium, but I also see some truly stalwart folks who choose to persevere for the love of their organizations.

From lower mitten, to the Copper Country, we see the same spirit of resilience. I'm so honored to serve this community, and be given the trust of all the small businesses that comprise not just the FTG markets, but the Keweenaw as a whole. It's all a grand experiment in creativity and scrappy do-it yourself entrepreneurship, so let's get to it. 🙌

That's a wrap on National Sauna Week stories (for now at least)! This little sauna rang with laughter, solemnly cradled memories honoring people and times long gone, and sheltered new endeavors and friendships newly kindled. The response online and in person was so wonderful, and we are honored to have had a hand in bringing this history project to fruition.

We have delivered a 12 minute montage of some of the moments gathered over the week. It will premiere during the Sauna Forum/Expo at the Finnish American Heritage Center this Saturday, 2/24. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to support the growth of sauna culture in the Keweenaw!

Yesterday, we received a mysterious package on our doorstep. Inside, 2 boxes full of slides and a letter, pages long. Someone in the Meta-verse (who now resides in downstate Midland, MI) sent us his stash of sauna photos from his years of living in the Copper Country.

Upon seeing wind of our Sauna Stories project with the Finnish Theme Committee, he realized what was literally destined for the bin could live a new life. (Sender: if you see this - THANK YOU. Expect a letter!)

Not many know, but we've been long at work on a sauna project before meeting our friends at the Finnish Theme Committee. Jim Kurtti definitely lit a fire under us, but it feels a particular type of magic to see how the sauna connects us yet.

A place for fire, building that primordial warmth. Naked, sweating, at your most vulnerable. Love, birth, death all happen within the sauna. We have built our life around it in many more ways than I can recount in this post. But for now, we hope to inspire all who live by the splash of the steam know that there are people who see the value of these practices and places, Finnish or not.

Anyways, our sauna is lit for the night. Why don't you come over for a spell?
