A positive spin on the EDM .com article on Worship Artists in North America—Hope you might read!

I've been pretty frustrated with the collective reaction to that worship article. I completely understand the passion and sensitivity people have towards our scene here, especially those who have put their whole life into it for decades, it would be easy to interpret that article with a lens of negativity that sees it as dismissive of many people's efforts.

The way I and many others in my close friends interpreted the artist' quotes, however, was not far off base with our experiences. For almost a decade I was a solid 10 years younger than everyone else in the clubs, a symptom of a problem that many people were eager to overlook: that drum & bass in the US needed to change. This requires self-reflection, analysis of our events and industry, and a huge amount of work. For many years I heard consistent feedback of "Drum & Bass doesn't financially work here" from promoters with say and sway. That means tickets weren't moving to the prime ticket buying audiences, the 18-30 year olds.

In my eyes, the article displayed raw issues I completely agree existed; from 2012 to 2020 the macrocosm of US Drum & Bass was disproportionately behind the rest of the world in terms of production, promotion and industry specialists. That is not to claim that every event was behind, because there have always been some extremely strong Drum & Bass brands in the states, many who set extraordinarily strong precedents and have maintained decades long tenures in our community. Both can be true, however, because as a whole, our scene was struggling to support even 10-15 full time artists on top of bringing international acts to clubs.

Enter 2020; the wind turned, with TikTok and other platforms serving Drum & Bass content to swaths of young people. The timing was perfect to present DNB in a new light, something the worship artists 100% did. Call it "In vogue", say "fresh energy", the truth is that these guys and others came around and presented a sleek, sexy, financially viable drum & bass that attracted young people who were new to the genre. That's fantastic. Talent buyers were less hesitant, the music industry recognized American artists who were making moves over here, and the people who started grinding to take advantage of this new shift made amazing headway.

This is exactly what we've always desired for this scene—something that supports artists from the deep underground all the way to selling out arenas. We can have both! An average at best article by an early 20s EDM fan is hardly the end-all-be-all of what the North American drum & bass scene is about, and it's a shame some people act like that's what the article is. We have years of hard work that have built this scene. But the truth is that the 2010s struggled collectively until something changed; one of those changes was Worship artists bringing a massive value package to promoters who were going to take it to the next level, and presented every detail to the highest global standard. They truly did play a key role in injecting energy into our scene, and I firmly believe they are able to claim that.

Many things can be true at the same time. We can all have worked our asses off to make something great for our scene, we can all have something we're proud of that has been happening for 30 odd years now, the worship artists can sell out arenas and move probably over 25000 tickets in the US on a Drum & Bass tour... That's a massive, massive accomplishment. On the same end, the events who applied similar strategies and global level marketing and production have been seeing the rewards of modernization. We genuinely are in a new era, and all these things can be true separately.

So please don't let insecurity drive the narrative anymore. We have so much to be proud of that we have accomplished ourselves, more than anything being the will to uphold what we care about. It's time for this music to LIVE here. If you want to help, support the people doing it right, support the people who want to upset the norms and make great things happen, support the people who are taking DNB in North America to the next level! We've come so far and have so far to go together 👊🏻👊🏻

Kicking off my first show this year with a 360 Set in Tampa at with 🔥 Followed by a rager in Salt Lake City for with a masssssive lineup. I’m working on being much more intentional this year, with the thoughts I put out there, the care I put into my work, and the music that I play for you guys—because at the end of the night I want people to know exactly what I’m about and to hear music that sets itself apart, leaves a special impact on every person who listens. We’ve all been racing towards a new dimension of love for Drum & Bass worldwide, and it’s so insane to witness and be a part of something like that. That’s why I’m going to take the limiter off this year. I thought I was making music that might have pushed an edge before, and now I’m deep in my studio honing in on that energy. I want to bring music that sounds like it came from the next century.

Story time—I’ve been a gamer all of my life, from some of my earliest memories playing N64 and staying up late on school nights playing pokemon…Game music always fascinated me, and inspired me to bring my own creativity into motion, helped me start playing piano, and ultimately set my career path towards making music for video games one day.

I’m extremely pleased to announce that I’ve hit another milestone for videogame credits, as I’ve now written several original tracks for new game 🏎️🏁

Thanks so much to the team ar and for facillitating this; it’s great to have more drum & bass in videogames!

For any developers who may be looking at this and know my sound as Justin Hawkes—I write a complete spectrum of music when I approach videogame sound, whether it is ambient environment soundscaping, or lush melody driven themes, fully orchestrated anxiety inducers, or even heavy metal doom style tunes…I love doing it all, and every project warrants a different approach. I’m very much looking to expand my credits in 2024 and beyond; if you have a serious project in need of a soundtrack, please don’t hesitate to send me details 👊🏻

16 Million Streams. What an honor. Making a living from music is not easy in the slightest; for that, I am extremely grateful for everyone who has found my music and taken their time with it. The support and growth this year has been hard to wrap my head around. Coming up from a farm in southwest Virginia with absolutely no connection to the drum & bass scene, I’m insanely proud of the work I’ve made and seen reverberate throughout the world. Putting my passion for Drum & Bass (and video game music 👀) into action every day has been so rewarding, and in spite of the silent sacrifices so many artists make for this lifestyle, I’m so grateful to have such supportive fans and listeners every year.
