We love our friends at Olivo Cafe! Thank you so much for your support and love for our River District community ❤️🥰
It was such a treat to feature .burnaby in our 4th Issue of River District Living magazine!

If you haven’t been to Olivo Cafe Burnaby yet, this is your sign! You can even bring your dogs to their pet friendly patio 🐶. And did you know they also have a location in Surrey .surrey as well as two amazing food trucks .vancouver and ❤️🍔🌮🦖🎉!!

Olivo Cafe is a family run business that was established in 2021. We offer various Mexican inspired brunch and dinner menu items 7 days a week. Our most popular breakfast items are Grande Chilaquiles and Breakfast Burrito and our most popular lunch and dinner items are Quesabirria and Spicy Chorizo Penne. Oh and we can’t forget our delicious drinks. Our customers love our Spanish Latte as well as Horchata.
We are located 15 minutes walking distance away from the River District. We are hidden in the middle of an industrial area but once you find us, you will be welcomed with warm smiles and delicious food and drinks.

On sunny days, we have a patio where our customers enjoy their meals and drinks with their furry friends. One summer day, we had over 10 furry friends all hanging out on the patio. It was amazing.

Besides our amazing cafe, we also offer catering service to the birthday parties, corporate meetings, company events, outdoor festivals with our two food trucks called Tacosaurus and Katsuya (now open!). They are in business from May to October. Tacosaurus offers delicious tacos, street style nachos and churros and Katsuya will offer Japanese/Korean fusion fried pork and chicken cutlets on burgers and rice.

We are thrilled to have been able to feature muralist and water-colour artist Hyerim Yoon in our 4th issue 🎨❤️💐 Her breathtaking mural “A Bouquet” adorns the walk down to the river and it’s impossible to pass by it without admiration for its beauty! Here is more about the talented artist and the mural itself!

Hyerim Yoon is a Korean Watercolour artist with interior design background. In Korea, she used to teach art to students, and also worked as a freelance interior designer/ graphic designer. After moving to Vancouver, she became a watercolour artist and muralist. Her work as a designer made her work more curated and color coordinated, and vibrant. She takes particular interests in nature, its color, and energy that comes from it.

“A Bouquet” exemplifies the inherent structural beauty and harmonious interplay of colors within a diverse collection of flowers, seamlessly united as a singular entity. Each floral element symbolizes distinct memories, akin to the recollection of cherished moments within one’s mind. With the intention of evoking a sense of nostalgia and joy, this artwork endeavors to illuminate the viewer’s consciousness with fond reminiscences.

It’s dangerously good to have BAK’D Cookies available right here in River District, but we are NOT complaining 😋❤️😍🍪! Jessica and Andy have built an amazing cookie empire and we are thrilled to feature them in our 4th issue. (If you didn’t read it yet please make sure you do since there is a special offer inside from our friends at BAK’D! 🥰). We are also super excited for the upcoming first BAK’D brick and mortar location - who is going to be the lucky neighbourhood? 🎉🎉🎉

Derek from Kingsway Computers absolutely saved me in getting issue 4 out on time when my computer decided it didn’t want to work all of a sudden. He was able to diagnose and fix my computer same day for a very good price. I was sweating haha but Derek came through for me! But don’t take my word for it, check out his reviews on Google ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

His shop is tucked away in Old Orchard Shopping Centre - truly a hidden gem.

Meet Snax! Our adorable Pet of the Month in issue 4 of River District Living magazine. To know him is to love him ❤️🐾🥰

From Snax’ mom 🐾❤️:

Snax is a well known French Bulldog that lives in the River District. He was born on June 12, 2021 and has been a social guy since he was a puppy thanks to the welcoming community here.

He is full of energy and never fails to bring smiles to people’s faces thanks to his outgoing personality, friendly nature and playful wiggles. He is very social, eager to see his friends and always has a big smile for everyone he encounters. Don’t be surprised if you see him wiggling around on the sidewalk on a sunny day - that’s just Snax being his silly self!

Some of the things he loves the most are going for walks, seeing all his friends and visiting his favorite neighborhood spots: Bosley’s, Starbucks and Everything Wine, these establishments not only know him by name but also love to spoil him with treats and pets. Everyone has been incredibly welcoming, showering Snax with love and affection.

He also loves adventures with friends along the River or at Everett Crowley on a nice day and while he loves exploring new places, he’s equally content hanging out in the neighborhood, meeting up with friends, and enjoying a pup cup.

Speaking of pup cups, he has yet to meet a treat he doesn’t like. He loves all things food and we love to highlight his love of ‘snacks’ through his collection of food related harnesses.

To know Snax is to love him. His playful and energetic nature is simply irresistible. So, the next time you’re in River District, keep an eye out for Snax - he loves saying hi and making new friends!

It was so fun working with Akie, a nurse/educator and a lifestyle content creator based in Vancouver to learn about his recent visit to in River District! Thank you for sharing your content and recommendations with us in issue 3! 🍉🍵❤️

I recently visited the vibrant River District to check out Boketto Tea Bar. Several items were added to their menu for Spring and I personally love the watermelon Yakult which is delicious and very refreshing. Perfect for the warmer weather.

And of course, a visit to Boketto Tea Bar would not be complete without trying their famous mochi stuffed cookies. Everything was good but my personal favourite is the matcha flavour.

I will definitely comeback to try other items in Boketto’s menu and explore more of what River District has to offer!

We are thrilled to have featured on the cover of issue 3! Caitlin’s mural “Where You Will Find Me” lives in our River District community and you can currently find it along the river path. It is so wonderful to learn more about the beautiful murals in our community & the artists who created them!

Artist Bio:
Caitlin McDonagh is a visual artist and muralist who creates intricate illustrative works that are inspired by folklore, symbolism, and the balancing of the Human vs. Natural World. The themes of connection, self-cultivation, growth, loss, and renewal are woven into the worlds that she creates. The goal with her artistic practice is to create her own folklore; work that leaves doors open within it, allowing the viewer to add to the stories, create their own imagined landscapes, and find parts of themselves within this imagery. You can find Caitlin’s mural work across Canada and the US. Her paintings are part of the City of Burnaby Permanent Art Collection at the Burnaby Art Gallery and part of numerous private collections worldwide.

Mural Statement:
An overarching theme within my work is the idea of connection and the various ways that we strive to resonate and find each other, often represented by the weaving ribbon-hands that are searching for each other, and meeting, often in the center of the landscape of the piece. We are all moving through our lives, looking for familiarity and closeness, whether with each other or with ourselves. “Where You Will Find Me” was painted during the first year of the pandemic, and these themes were suddenly combined with new ways of communicating and interacting with one another amidst chaos and confusion. Creating this piece in the serene environment of the River District walking path area felt like such a special way to make art during such a strange time. Being able to see the community outside, happy and connecting, even from afar, felt like the perfect environment to bring this piece to life in.

Say hello to our sweet River District friend and River District Living magazine Issue 3 Pet of the Month, Bailey! ❤️🐾

Bailey is our beloved Bernese Mountain Dog and she is almost 3 years old. With her endearing personality and gentle nature, she easily captures the hearts of everyone she meets. While Bailey adores humans and eagerly seeks out their affection, she can be a bit selective with other dogs (here Bailey’s favourite furfriends: Stevie, Cedar, Gus, Alfie, Kiro ❤️).

Her top hobbies include snacking on treats, chasing after sticks like there’s no tomorrow, and splashing around in the river. Despite her big size, Bailey’s heart matches her frame, radiating warmth and affection wherever she goes.

We’re beyond grateful to have her in our lives. We can’t wait to make more unforgettable memories together, whether we’re exploring new trails, cooling off in the river, or just chilling at home. Every moment with Bailey is a precious gift. She has become not just a pet, but an integral part of our family, bringing boundless joy, love, and laughter into our home each and every day. Built just for us in River District, District Noodle House is a standalone location that we are lucky enough to have in our community. Offering elevated Vietnamese cuisine with a great mix of modern and classics, District Noodle House boasts food that is always fresh, flavourful, and filling. There is something for everyone with a variety of options for meat lovers, for vegetarians, and vegans too!

We are so glad Donna and Jennifer were able to fight and persevere to make their dream of opening District Noodle House come true so we can enjoy these amazing dishes ❤️

The beautiful cover art in this issue is from our River District mural “Where You Will Find Me” by and is located along the Fraser River walking path of River District. Added in 2020 as part of the main theme of this mural is connection. Painted during the first year of the pandemic, we all had to find new ways to stay in touch with one another and this mural serves to remind us about the importance of connecting with ourselves and each other. We are so lucky to have this beautiful piece in our neighbourhood ❤️
