Ghana goes to the poll tomorrow to elect District Assembly and Unit Committee members.

Alliance for Women in Media, which I convene started a campaign to draw attention to the huge gender disparity among the contestants.

1,106 women against 17,000+ men for the district assemblies nationwide with some regions as low as 5 women candidates.
5,413 women against 40,000+ men for the unit committees.

Clearly, even if all contesting women were to win, it will still be very low and very unrepresentative of the diversity within our local communities.

The local districts and its issues affect women directly: health, education, markets, social infrastructure, etc …

The strength of our democracy can only be measured by the strength of its women actors who are both service users and service providers.

We, especially those of us today privileged, must never underestimate the power of OPPORTUNITY, whether given or taken. Some of us are who we are today because of the opportunities we were first given and those we later took for ourselves.

I therefore appeal to all those who will be voting tomorrow to add your voice to our campaign to increase women’s voices and also other underrepresented groups. Most importantly, .
