Ever struggle dancing on a packed dance floor?

Yup, me too.

It can be really frustrating running into people, dodging elbows and constantly getting stepped on.

I remember one night dancing cuban salsa at Son Havana in Medellín, Colombia. It was packed, as always, and there were a bunch of other foreigners learning how to dance – which is great, but sometimes the beer gets them a little too excited...

As we danced my partner, being the ex-military Israeli she was, was forced into straight-arming the insurgents so they wouldn't run into her.

It felt like a rugby game and it was so intense we actually started laughing.

Thanks to my body guard I escaped without any bruises, but there were many people that night that weren't so lucky.

So how can we avoid bad experiences and broken noses?​

In this video I've got a bunch of tips for you on how you can turn the chaos into an opportunity for connection, keep your partner safe and have more fun in tight spaces.

Build their understanding gradually until they're ready for something more complex. ⁠

Offering complex information to an audience that isn't ready for it doesn't make you smart or cool. It makes you a poor teacher.⁠

You don't serve babies giant plates of food. So don't serve your students something they can't eat yet. ⁠

I spend a lot of time thinking about the process behind achieving or teaching various skills. Here's how I would teach someone to stay on beat:⁠
⁠
1) Learn to understand simple music: pop, hip hop, rock etc. with basic music vocabulary.⁠
⁠
2) Learn how to move to simple music: simple steps, snapping, clapping. ⁠
⁠
3) Learn to understand the more complex music, salsa, it's instruments and how it's different.⁠
⁠
4) Learn how to move to salsa, doing basics and practicing staying on time⁠
⁠
Anything that appears to be difficult can be broken down into smaller, simpler logical steps. The ability to do that is what makes a good teacher. ⁠
⁠
Search "Finding the beat dance dojo" on youtube to find the entire playlist. It will teach you how to find the beat in any music and stay on it, especially salsa.⁠

Being "advanced" is about the quality of your basics.⁠

A "basic" is a fundamental movement that serves as a base for other movements. ⁠
⁠
At first your ability to execute basics will be immature. You'll do them, but they won't be impressive technically or visually. ⁠

Eventually, you'll level up those basics to more mature, full bodied, movements that are technically and visually impressive.⁠

Dancing on3 existed in Cuba before salsa came around and it can be done intentionally, BUT it's often done unknowingly by untrained dancers or dancers trying to dance on1. ⁠

Dancing on 3 ISN'T wrong (you and your partner can dance to whatever timing you want) but, if you're intending to dance on1 and end up dancing on3 by mistake, then this video will help you understand why!⁠
