The Trust focuses on expanding the historic narrative all year long. In 2023, we’re celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Mary Ann Shadd Cary.

Cary’s life was brought to the stage by actor and playwright Leslie McCurdy with her one-woman play titled, Things My Fore-Sisters Saw.

This year, the Toronto Black Film Festival is honored to present the TBFF 2023 Career Achievement Award to Writer, Producer and Director Jennifer Holness. The first Black woman in Canada to win a CSA for best writing, 2021 Indie screen Producer of the Year and a 2022 WIFT Creative Excellence Award winner. Join us tomorrow for , 8pm at the Isabel Bader Theatre. The tribute will precede the Opening Film: LOVELY JACKSON by Matt Waldeck followed by a Q&A with the guests.

Jennifer Holness is the first Black woman in Canada to win a CSA for best writing, she is the 2021 Indie screen Producer of the Year and a 2022 WIFT Creative Excellence Award winner. Her recent feature doc, Subjects of Desire, has won numerous festival awards and was a 2021 TIFF top 10 film. Her TV series include Shoot The Messenger and Guns, with the latter winning 5 CSA's and garnering a prestigious Rose d’Or nomination. Her narrative feature films, Home Again and Love, S*x and Eating the Bones have screened around the globe, with Bones winning a Best First Feature award at TIFF. She is a Founder and the Inaugural Chair of the Black Screen Office and is an Executive Board Member of the CMPA.

The Chatham Sports Hall of Fame proudly honours by celebrating the achievements of many of our honoured Inductees. Today let's meet Earl 'Flat' Chase ( 1910-1954) Inducted into the CSHOF - 2001. Born in the Buxton area, he played all positions for the Chatham Coloured All-Stars. He held records for the longest home runs ever hit at multiple ballparks. As a pitcher he won the final 2 games as the All-Stars won the 1934 OBA Championship.
In 1939 he starred for the London Majors who won the Amateur World’s Baseball Championship by beating all teams they faced from the Baseball Congress of America

Happy George Washington Carver Day! Because Carver's exact birthday is unknown, the date of his death was chosen to recognize the accomplishments of this influential scientist and inventor. It was Carver who suggested that farmers plant peanuts, soybeans and sweet potatoes in their fields to increase production because they restore nitrogen levels in the soil, and encourage growth of other crops.

Hour-long Reel Shorts Windsor episode that features our short documentary Journey Back to Jackson Park will feature ON MONDAY OCTOBER 11th on CBC TV. Airing will be local to Windsor.
