The Classic Hip Hop Show (CHHS) began in 2006 when John Long (then-Program Director of Birmingham, Alabama’s WUHT-FM) sought a DJ to host a show dedicated to playing classic, golden-era hip hop hits, and do it with style, charisma, and knowledge of the culture. Long personally invited veteran DJ Supreme to the task because not only does he talk the talk, he actively represents the culture and has
an extensive knowledge of the genre. As a fixture on Hot 107.7’s weekend lineup, the CHHS was able to reach number
one in its daypart for 12 ratings books, 5 of those consecutively. The Classic Hip Hop Show with Supreme is able to captivate and connect with the listening audience not only by playing the most important classic hip hop music (from artists such as Run DMC, Dr. Dre and Salt n Pepa), but also with very entertaining features such as:
• Classic Hip Hop Block – For one hour the CHHS pays tribute to the music and accomplishments of various classic hip hop artists, movements, and eras.
• Interviews – Each week Supreme interviews some of the most prolific artists in the game. Past guests have included Doug E. Fresh, Chuck D., Common and many more.
• Classic Clips – Supreme plays a “classic clip” from an artist outlining their philosophy, promoting their project, or providing candid insight.
• The Finish Line – A contest where a listener calls in to correctly finish the line from a classic hip hop song. The correct caller wins a prize courtesy of the CHHS. For eight years, WUHT-FM was the home for the CHHS. In 2014, after a change in direction and management, WUHT and the CHHS parted ways amicably. The show found a new home on Birmingham-based internet radio powerhouse Substrate Radio. Now with this global platform, Supreme and the CHHS continue to excel in the art of presenting the most outstanding classic hip hop, the most important artist interviews, and the most entertaining features.
