Today is World No To***co Day, a day of awareness and education around the dangers of to***co use. Dr. Jack has worked on multiple campaigns to help reduce the use of to***co in kids and adults.

As the Director of the Arizona Department of Health, Jack led an award winning campaign that delivered straight talk to kids about the effects of to***co. The campaign was proven to lower to***co consumption in children and adults.

Later, Jack worked with Oral Health America on a campaign to reduce the use of spit to***co by young people. He worked with baseball legend Joe Garagiola to raise awareness of the link between spit to***co and oral cancer. The campaign involved giving cancer screenings to Major League Baseball teams during spring training and encouraging players to not chew to***co during televised games.

If you grew up in the early to mid-90’s, you may remember these “gross-out” ad spots giving kids straight talk about to***co use. When Jack enrolled at NYU, he was 22 years old and looked like a “prep,” according to his best friend and classmate, Jon Nash. By the time Jack entered his Junior year, he looked very… different. He and his classmates were influenced by Woodstock and the artists and activists they admired.

The change in how the students dressed was only the beginning. They were organizing and demanding social change. They sought an end to the Draft and the Vietnam War. They wanted more input over the quality of the education they were paying for. And they weren’t going to back down.

As president of the student body at NYU, Jack was invited to the White House to participate in a secret student summit with President Nixon. It didn’t go the way Nixon thought it would.

Today is World Down Syndrome Day, a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

Ever since his days as a dental student at NYU, Dr. Jack has been an enthusiastic and tireless advocate for Down Syndrome patients. He regularly speaks and writes about the need to change laws and regulations regarding dental health insurance for people with developmental disabilities like Down Syndrome.

Jack writes:
“Equitable access must extend to certain individuals who are challenging to care for – a calling that has been a passion of mine for my entire career. My heart goes out to those with intellectual or developmental disabilities, and those with medically complex conditions. These folks with special health care needs are typically ‘aged-out’ or excluded from the dental benefits they need due to policies and laws that are insensitive to their conditions.

For example, in most states in America, a child with a developmental disorder typically loses their dental benefits when they reach the chronological age of 21 years, even though they have not grown out of their behavioral issues. This is unfair and intolerable. Inequities such as these beckon for health policy activism to right these wrongs and are a clarion call to compassionate leaders in our profession.”
Read more in this op-ed piece Jack wrote for the American Dental Association:

https://adanews.ada.org/new-dentist/2021/november/21st-century-leadership-a-challenge-to-those-who-thought-that-dentistry-was-just-about-teeth/

I think that it is reasonable to assume that the practice model of the 21st century will continue to favor intradisciplinary group dental practice.

Did you know that March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM)? Over the course of his career, Dr. Jack Dillenberg has worked tirelessly to bring awareness to the need for more training for healthcare professionals so they can deliver the best care to patients with developmental disabilities. Upon leaving the US Navy, Jack took a position with the Southbury Training School in Connecticut. He delivered dental care to students with disabilities. This experience inspired him to do more to advocate for this patient population. Since then he has served as an ambassador and advocate for the Special Olympics, and as Dean of ASDOH, he was passionate about educating young dental students on the need to deliver compassionate care to patients with disabilities.

In 2017, Jack was named advocacy ambassador to the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry (AADMD). AADMD is a forum for physicians and dentists engaged in improving healthcare for individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders and intellectual disabilities.

Throughout his career, Dr. Dillenberg has advocated for patients with special needs. As dean, he brought this passion to ATSU-ASDOH. Under his leadership, providing exceptional care for all patients has been adopted into the school’s culture and curriculum. In fact, ATSU-ASDOH students are required to have clinical experience caring for individuals with disabilities.

Inspired by Dr. Dillenberg’s example, ATSU-ASDOH students reached out to Special Olympics Arizona to see how the school could better serve children with disabilities. The result of the partnership was Day for Special Smiles, a student-led initiative in which children with special needs receive free dental care at the school’s clinic. The event, now in its seventh year, provides students with experience serving youth with disabilities, while inspiring the local healthcare community to support patients with special needs.

February 24 is the “Great American Spit Out,” a national campaign encouraging people to quit using spit to***co.

In 1997, after leading a successful anti-to***co campaign as the Director of the AZ Health Department, Dr. Jack was recruited by Oral Health America to be part of a national campaign started by baseball Hall of Famer Joe Garagiola.

Joe was distraught by how many of his former teammates and colleagues in Major League Baseball were being diagnosed with mouth cancer due to the use of spit to***co.

Together with Neil Romano, they launched a campaign that included oral health screenings for all MLB players. Jack hired and trained dentists to set up oral health screenings during spring training. They also recruited former MLB player Bill Tuttle, who was diagnosed with mouth cancer, to spread awareness of the effects of spit to***co use.

As a result of the campaign, MLB players agreed to not chew to***co on camera, because of the influence they have on young fans. Research shows a significant decrease in the number of players who use spit to***co, on and off the field.

Jack and Joe became dear friends and stayed close right up until Garagiola’s death in 2016. His tireless work to educate players on the dangers of spit to***co became one of Garagiola’s lasting legacies in Major League Baseball.

Joe was a wonderful man and his contributions to public health live on.

Dr. Jack spent two years (1976-1978) in Jamaica working for the Ministry of Health. He delivered free dental care to the residents of Green Island, a fishing village outside of Negril. Later on, when he became the Dean of the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health, Jack returned to Jamaica with a group of students. He was surprised to find that many people still remembered him from his days as “The Little White Dentist of Negril.” It was a full-circle moment for Jack!

Who is Dr. Jack Dillenberg? And why should you know him?

Jack’s accomplishments as a public health leader go back five decades.

Dr. Jack is an expert in the area of public health leadership, health program development, and oral health issues. Jack is a graduate of the Harvard University School of Public Health, where he also taught public health to dentists. He worked as a consultant for the World Bank, where he taught citizens of Calcutta, India, basic public health practices that stopped a cholera outbreak.

In the 2000’s, Jack was the inaugural Dean of A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health, one of the most innovative dental schools in America. Before that, in the mid 1990’s, he was the Director of the Arizona Department of Health and Human Services. During his time in that role, he launched an award-winning public service initiative to reduce to***co use in young people.

In the 70’s, Jack worked for the Jamaican Ministry of Health, providing free dental care to more than 60,000 residents of Jamaica.

One of Dr. Jack’s childhood heroes was President John F. Kennedy. Jack grew up wanting to be a Senator from New York, just like his hero.

Then, on Jack’s 18th birthday, November 22, 1963, while he was in a government class at American University, a student ran in and announced that President Kennedy had been assassinated in Dallas, Texas.

Jack was absolutely crushed by the news. It also served as a catalyst for his future path. He decided to change his major from law and pursue a career in healthcare.

Here’s a clip from President Kennedy’s famous commencement speech at American University just months before his death.

When Dr. Jack Dillenberg was in high school, he saw this newspaper ad for the Peace Corps, a new volunteer organization created by one of his heroes, President John F. Kennedy. The ad reads, “Is the glass half empty or half full? If you think it’s half empty, maybe the Peace Corps is not for you. If you think it’s half full, you’ve got the first thing we look for in Peace Corps people. Optimism.”

This ad changed the course of Jack’s life.

Later, Jack used the power of advertising to change the way young people thought about to***co. The advertising spots he helped create while he was the Director of the Arizona Department of Health gave kids “straight talk” about what to***co does to your body. Studies show that these ad spots worked in reducing to***co consumption in kids.

To this day, many people who saw those ads as children can still recite the slogan: ‘“To***co, the tumor-causing, teeth-staining, smelly, puking habit.”

If you lived in Arizona in the 1990’s, you probably saw these ad spots with the slogan, “To***co: The Tumor Causing, Teeth Staining, Smelly Puking Habit.” The ad campaign was created for the Arizona Department of Health by Riester Ad Agency. The slogan came from the mind of Dr. Jack Dillenberg, who was the director of the Health Department at the time.

The campaign became the most successful youth to***co prevention program in the nation! It was controversial at the time because the ads used “Gross out” humor to reach young people.
