This spring, geologists discovered a small crater at Norris Geyser Basin that, based on monitoring data, appears to have formed during a minor hydrothermal explosion on April 15, 2024. In this week's , here comes the boom!

https://www.usgs.gov/observatories/yvo/news/a-small-hydrothermal-explosion-norris-geyser-basin

An underappreciated geologic hazard in Yellowstone National Park is that of hydrothermal explosions. These are not volcanic eruptions, but rather sudden episodes of water flashing to steam underground. Small hydrothermal explosions happen almost annually someplace in Yellowstone National Park—like the 1989 explosion of Porkchop Geyser. Every few thousand years, large ones can also occur. The park is home to the largest-known hydrothermal explosion crater on Earth—Mary Bay, on the north side of Yellowstone Lake, is 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) across and formed about 13,000 years ago.

Monitoring stations in the Yellowstone region have historically been installed outside thermal areas to avoid the noise caused by all that boiling water moving around beneath the surface—that noise can make it hard to detect small earthquakes and subtle ground deformation. But in response to the need to better monitor hydrothermal hazards, the 2022–2032 Volcano and Earthquake Monitoring Plan for the Yellowstone Caldera System highlighted the importance of installing geophysical monitoring stations in geyser basins. Such monitoring could identify explosions that might otherwise go unnoticed and may even detect precursors that could serve as early warning of an impending hazard. The first such station was installed in Norris Geyser Basin in September 2023.

In May 2024, geologists who were performing field work in Norris Geyser Basin discovered a small crater a few feet (1–2 meters) across that was surrounded by fragments of upthrown silica sinter and disrupted ground. The crater was located on Porcelain Terrace, near the western edge of Nuphar Lake and above Porcelain Basin on the east side of Norris Geyser Basin, and it had formed since the last time geologists had visited the area in September 2023. This area had been exceptionally active during the prior two years, with enhanced runoff from thermal features on the terrace flowing into Nuphar Lake and causing the lake level to rise significantly. In May 2024, however, the features in the area were quiet, and no water was being emitted.

An examination of high-resolution satellite data indicated that the thermal features on Porcelain Terrace went from being very active to mostly dormant between April 2 and 21, 2024. The new crater and disrupted ground were too small to be visible in these images, but the timing of changes to the nearby thermal features provided a starting point for examining monitoring data for signs of an explosion.

The new hydrothermal monitoring site at Norris Geyser Basin includes not only GPS and seismic sensors, but also an infrasound array, which can detect the strength and directionality of low-frequency acoustic energy. On April 15, at 2:56 PM local time, the station recorded a strong acoustic signal from the direction of the new crater. Seismometers in the region also recorded a signal, but based on their distance from the crater, the signal was moving at the speed of sound, and not at the speed of a seismic wave—evidence that the signal was caused by an explosion and not an earthquake.

There were no obvious immediate precursors to the explosion in monitoring data. It might be that no changes occurred, or perhaps they were too small to be detected by the stations, the closest of which was about 1640 feet (500 meters) away. But the data that were recorded unequivocally identified the explosion, which is the first time such an event was recognized using geophysical data in Yellowstone National Park. And using this example, it may be possible to design alarms that can detect future similar events at Norris Geyser Basin using the new monitoring station.

The discovery also demonstrates the utility of continued expansion of hydrothermal monitoring in Yellowstone to detect similar events in the future, not only in Norris Geyser Basin but also in other thermal areas.

The recent Norris explosion occurred only about 160 feet (50 meters) from a boardwalk. Fortunately, the explosion was too small to have ejected debris to that distance, and it occurred during a time period when much of Yellowstone National Park was closed to visitors as winter operations transitioned to summer. The event nevertheless emphasizes importance of following park guidelines and staying on boardwalks and designated trails in thermal areas, and also highlights the hazardous nature of even small steam explosions—a hazard that will be increasingly targeted for monitoring and forecasting by the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory in the years to come.

The small crater and disrupted ground are in silica sinter deposits that formed in the past two years, since water has been flowing from the terrace into Nuphar Lake (off photo to right), and angular fragments of ejecta on top of the sinter are evidence that the crater formed due to a small explosion. Volcanic activity resumes on the Reykjanes Peninsula
A new fissure eruption started today, May 29, on the Reykjanes Peninsula, North-East from Sýlingarfell. The situation is similar to previous eruption in the area:
➡️ Air traffic to and from Iceland is operating normally, and Iceland remains a safe destination.
➡️ All services in Iceland are operating as usual.
➡️ The eruption’s effects are localized at the eruption site with road closures and do not threaten people.
➡️ The area is closed to all traffic.

I am back we arrived home this past Saturday safe and sound. We ended up with 15 tornadoes this year that we chased I was able to photo some of them the rest were too wrapped in rain and hail to see and too. I have some earthquake and volcanic news to share but it will have to wait till I’m not busy at work. Just wanted to keep you all up to date that I am okay and still here with loads to share with you lovely people💜

Going back to ruang for a moment here me and my buddies have a group where we chat about volcanoes and super volcanoes and this convo came up Ruang is possibly bigger then expected and much more dangerous as we see in the ocean bathymetrics here is suspiciously looks like there could very well be a caldera there inside the circle I made but also maybe not gonna have a deeper look into it later tonight.

So here’s something to think about when it comes to campi flegrei super volcano. She erupted with 200 km2 of ejecta which is 2x bigger than the Year Without Summer Tambora eruption of 1815 which was only 100 km2 of ejecta. And mind you in the vei scale each scale is 10x bigger than the next so if we compared Yellowstones eruptions (vei 7) to Mount St. Helens 1980 eruption (vei 5) Yellowstone is 100x bigger than that eruption. Also that will make the most recent eruption of hunga Tonga volcano look like child’s play to put it into scale

Campi flegrei with major activity and uplift still ongoing and the speed of the uplift has increased even further this isn’t good. Campi flegrei is one of the worlds super volcanoes but this one sits under cities in Italy. Right now she’s at yellow alert if this continues the ground may crack and we will be one step closer to an eruption. Don’t know how big of an eruption but with it being a super volcano this is extremely concerning to see and the quakes based on location looks like a big magmatic movement.

13/04/2024

The activity at the eruption site resumes.
The one and only main crater continues to generate the constant spattering of incandescent, juvenile and molten pyroclasts from where feeds the lava flow in the southern direction. The lava has been thickening in the vicinity of the crater rather than advancing further.
The ground deformation at Svartsengi region continues at well-balanced levels, but in early April it increased a bit comparable to the 16-31 March period. It indicates the continuous accumulation of magma beneath the region, causing the elevated pressure. The IMO added: "During the eruption, however, there is still an open connection between the magma collection area in Svartsengi and the SundhnĂşks crater series, and part of the magma flows to the surface there. Variations in the land mass can be seen between days, but overall the speed has been constant since the beginning of April."
Gas pollution from the eruption continues to pose a risk in the populated Reykjanes Peninsula area. Residents are urged to monitor air quality and understand how to respond to volcanic air pollution.
Yesterday's weather forecast predicted northerly winds of 8-13 m/s, decreasing today. This will push gas pollution southward. By late today, winds will shift westward, carrying pollution towards the east.
The risk assessment remains unchanged and will be in effect until 3:00 PM on 16 April.
