Have you heard of the Famicom Disk Writer? Nintendo installed several "Disk Writer" kiosks in various toy and electronic stores across Japan. These kiosks allowed customers to bring in their Famicom Disk System games and have a new game rewritten onto them for a small fee. These jukebox style stations allowed users to copy from a rotating stock of the latest games to their disks and keep each one for an unlimited time. Retailers disliked the Disk Writer kiosks for taking up too much space and for generally being unprofitable.

Remember when developers would throw “Super” in front of literally ANYTHING and sell it as a video game? Despite coverage by Nintendo Power magazine, Super Hunchback sold relatively few copies in North America and was not widely released. Conversely, the game received several positive reviews in Europe and enjoyed some brief mild success. What’s your favorite “Super” game? Bonus points if it wasn’t even on the Super Nintendo.

Remember Sega Net Link? The Net Link connected to the internet through standard dial-up services. Unlike other online gaming services in the US, one does not connect to a central service, but instead tells the dial-up modem connected to the Saturn's cartridge slot to call to the person with whom one wishes to play. Since it requires no servers to operate, the service can operate as long as at least two users have the necessary hardware and software, as well as a phone line.

In Japan, however, gamers did connect through a centralized service known as SegaNet, which would later be taken offline and converted for Dreamcast usage.

In 1999 all the “cool kids” made sure to grab a Tommy Hilfiger Game Boy Color alongside their new shoes and pencil bags when it came time for Back to School shopping. This was the first time a Nintendo system had been co-branded with another company's logo in North America. You can find one today for around $140... if you’re into that sort of thing.
