No! No! No! Such backward steps- this is serious -kids DO NOT belong in jail ! These children need support communties scremaning out for their solutiojns to be funded. THIS new law breeches Child , human and Indigenous rights . Most , if not all kids locked up at present in the NT are First Nations kids! What does this say about our country . we are a racist prison state.
belong on Country as the Grandmothers of Darwin and Central Australia have been saying for decades . For over 8 years the Independent Member for Mulka , the Hon Yingiya Mark Guyula MLA , has been speaking of their and local First Nations solutions that will work. These need to be well resourced and funded . Yet First Peoples denied their basic rights to self-detertmination in this and so much more. Be OUTRAGED -SPEAK UP _The NT Government have ignored evidence of what works and best practise.

Change the Record add
"Experts in child development, health, and justice, universally agree that punitive measures do not rehabilitate children. Children do not belong in prisons, environments that simply deepen their trauma, taking them away from their family and their community, and in the case of First Nations children, away from their Country and their culture. Instead, Children need therapeutic and nurturing environments where they can heal and grow, where they receive the nurturing and support that they require to reach their full potential.
In light of the Northern Territory Government’s actions, Change the Record is calling on the Australian Government to intervene and to set a national standard for raising the minimum age of criminal responsibility to 14. The Australian Government has both a legal and a moral obligation to protect the rights and welfare of all Australian children, especially those most at risk of being caught in a criminal legal system. Now more than ever, we need strong leadership to ensure that the rights of vulnerable children, especially First Nations children, are safeguarded from politically motivated and regressive policies."...

Health, justice and human rights experts as well as Indigenous community leaders have criticised the legislation as discriminatory and against best practice.
