COMIX: THE UNDERGROUND REVOLUTION
While mainstream comics have graced newsstands since the 1930s, there has long been an underground comics scene brewing deep beneath the surface. Underground comic books (which took the name "comix," using the "x" to signify their adult nature) erupted in the 1960s as a reaction to ultraconservative and patriotic comics produced by the large corporations that featured characters like Captain America and Superman. Bored with moralistic tales, artists such as Robert Crumb, creator of Zap Comix and Fritz the Cat; and Gilbert Shelton, creator of The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, produced a new and revolutionary style, freely attacking politicians, the war in Vietnam, and corporate America. Comix is an homage to both the motivation and the talent of the artists working then and now in the genre. Beautifully illustrated throughout with original artworks the book graphically expresses a range of attitudes on topics ranging from s*x, drugs, and rock n' roll to politics, big business, and women's liberation. This is the first book from the UK to explore the artwork and countercultural legacy of comix, key events in the history of this medium, and biographies of its most influential artists and writers.

Is this the best review ever? From Professor Richard Bruce Parkinson, author of ‘A Little Gay History.’

A great read for LGBT History Month is ‘Forty Lies: a Work of Ipsedixitism’ [declaring things without supporting evidence]. It is created by David Shenton, an internationally acclaimed gay cartoonist, who has assembled forty episodes from his life and work to present a roughly chronological sequence recording gay experiences from the past 70 years, including (this is a random selection): coming out with Jason and the Argonauts, moustache-care, AIDs, knitting (with patterns), Joan Collins and a bucket, a feline ‘Ginger Tom of Finland’, pretty policemen, Clause 28, London snapshots, twenty-two years of home life (with Wright’s Coal tar soap), the author’s four December weddings, and activism of many different types, all in some 280 pages of cartoons. ‘Forty Lies’ forms a life story (note the anagram) that parallels Kate Charlesworth’s magnificent ‘Sensible Footwear, A Girl's Guide: A Graphic Guide to Le***an and Q***r History 1950-2020' (2019). This wonderful book is sharply observed, visually and verbally dazzling, and every page displays what my artist father would have termed ‘bloody good draughtsmanship’. It is passionately committed to gay rights, very wise, moving, and every page of it rings true. It is VERY funny. No description can do justice to this graphic tour de force, so please just read it!

Warehouse find. Just uncovered the wonderful French Homage to Gilbert Shelton and The Freak Brothers - Fabuleux Furieux.
Since the recognition of Robert Crumb, the US Underground comic strip has now won its respectability and acceptance. However, we too often forget to do justice to the most popular of its authors, a certain Gilbert Shelton: father of the legendary Freak Brothers and Fat Freddy's Cat, who now lives and works in France. His comics are read throughout the world. However, since the 70's, his influential pen has also nourished several generations of cartoonists, leaving an undeniable imprint on their own work. On the initiative of Olivier Josso, author and coordinator of the project, this copious album entitled Fabuleux Furieux! - Tribute in Freak Style collects some 192 pages by 80 authors, natural children of Shelton and his drug influenced Pieds Nickeleés: Baudoin, Hunt Emerson, Jano, Pic, Zou, Lewis Trondheim, Menu, Mattt Konture, Pakito Bolino, Blanquet, Fredox and many others, each testifying to their deep gratitude to this monument of subversive humour, sharp observation and peerless drawing. The ensemble brings together a tribute as furiously joyful as it is diverse...

Wonderful review of Hunt Emerson's PHENOMENOMIX at
https://theslingsandarrows.com/phenomenomix/

Hunt Emerson is the UK’s greatest living cartoonist. It’s a source of great joy, therefore, that his longest running and most sustained work is now gathered in this magnificent collection.
Every page is unfettered joy, the expressions gleeful, the situations suitably preposterous and the visual asides a delight. It’s peak Emerson.
