Nigerian Senate Passes Bill to Revert to Old National Anthem

The Senate has passed the National Anthem Bill 2024, which seeks to revert to the old national anthem, "Nigeria, we hail thee". The bill passed its first and second readings last Thursday and now awaits President Bola Tinubu's assent to become law.

The old anthem was adopted when Nigeria gained independence on October 1, 1960, and was dropped in 1978 during Olusegun Obasanjo's military administration. The lyrics were written by Lillian Jean Williams, a British expatriate, and the music was composed by Frances Berda.

The old anthem played a significant role in shaping Nigeria's national identity and unity during the 1960s and late 1970s. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele emphasized the anthem's impact, stating that it inspired deep patriotism among Nigerians and evoked nostalgia and fond memories of the early years.

The bill will be transmitted to President Bola Tinubu for assent. If signed into law, it will be the first time Nigeria's national anthem will be given legal backing. The bill was read for the first and second time last week Thursday at the Senate and received an accelerated hearing at the lower house, where it was read for the first, second, and third time.
