I love things that make life and business easier...and love to share them with others when I find something really good.

When it comes to content creation, I'm not keeping any secrets, so let me share my top tools for content creation:

1. I use Sendible to create and schedule content for myself and my clients ahead of time. This helps me stay consistent.

2. I use Trello to keep track of posting plans and as a place to put content ideas when I think of them. It's also a great place to make hashtag lists.

3. Canva is my go to for creating graphics to go along with content. It's user friendly and really pretty intuitive, if you ask me.

4. My favorite "tool" is having a system for creating content. It really makes it all go so much faster and makes it a lot easier overall. I want everyone to feel that way about content creation, so I created a FREE guide with my quick and easy system. Comment below to get your copy!

If you look at my IG profile from the beginning of this year til now, it's hard to believe that once upon a time I used to post Reels every day, even twice a day for a while.

I just haven't done it much at all this year, especially the last 6 months. I keep saying I'm going to get back to it, but I just haven't. A lot of it was due to me cutting back on what I was doing on social media. And then I just got out of the habit. But the truth is that I do enjoy filming them, posting them, watching them etc, so I started back up earlier this week.

This time around, I want to do things a little bit differently. I want to know what you want out of my Reels. What kinds of Reels do you like to watch and do you find helpful? I love to do the Reels that match up with trending audio (sometimes funny stuff, sometimes not) because I appreciate the entertainment aspect as a twist to the tips I share with my audience. Do you like those types of Reels? What about tutorial Reels? Talking Reels?

Let me know in the comments what you find helpful. I want to incorporate that into what I make.

Tell me if you're with me on this one - the stress and overwhelm is real sometimes as a small business owner.

Even though our businesses take a lot of our time and energy, we have ourselves and our families to take care of too. All of that stuff just builds up sometimes.

On National Stress Awareness Day, I'm reminding you to take notice of the stressors in life and figure out some ways to make them less stressful. While I'm a big believer in the power of self care for stress relief (or prevention), I also believe that self care can include things like getting help. Whether in your personal life or in your business, getting just a little bit of help can go a long way in reducing stress.

Spoiler alert!

Time for a little election day fun. While I totally believe you should exercise your right to vote for the world you want to live in, I want you to weigh in on something a little less serious for the moment.

Want to know the best time to engage on social media to maximize engagement on your content?

Experts might tell you to check your insights to see when your audience is most active. Or they might list optimal times of day to engage. You might try to engage at all of these times so you can maximize the connections you make for your business.

But...the recommended times might not really work for you and might add a lot more to your plate. When that happens, you're likely to burn out and not be consistent. You might even stop engaging altogether.

As long as you're being consistent, the best time to engage is when you have the time.

Do you feel like you don't really have the time to spend on social media making connections for your business? Learn how I can help. Visit my website (link in profile) or DM me for more information.

I love planning things out and having a system for my content, but sometimes I feel like I talk about the same things all the time (which is totally ok, by the way).

To mix up my content, I like to sometimes post about holidays or things from my personal life. That type of content is a great way for your audience to get to know you a little bit better. A lot of people tend to want to work with those they know, like and trust.

Anyway sometimes you may see me post about seemingly random holidays or national days. I get those from the National Day Calendar. As a matter of fact, when I'm laying out my content each week, I take a look at the National Day Calendar first. I do have a strategy behind using it, though. For the most part, I find days that I can relate back to my business in some way. Those national days just provide another way for me to talk about social media.

How do you feel about the random holidays and national days?

Have you ever looked at someone's Instagram profile and thought about how aesthetically pleasing it is? Maybe each post is set up as a piece of the puzzle to make a larger picture out of all the posts. Maybe they have a checkerboard pattern.

Do you feel like your profile grid needs to look like this (and then maybe get a little stressed out trying to make it happen)?

I'm here to tell you that you don't need to do this. Now, if it's something you want and it doesn't take much time/energy on your part, then by all means go for it. It's just not necessary. Instagram has become more about all different kinds of authentic content and less about showing up in an aesthetically pleasing way.

For me, I try to do a mix of pictures and graphics, as well as use different shades of purple on my graphics. Beyond that, there is no pattern or rhyme or reason to my profile grid.

What about you? Do you try to do something special with your grid? Why or why not?

I'm Gen X, not Gen Z, even thought this filter says Gen Z. I thought about changing the pic, but it's a fun pic otherwise, so I left it. Anyway, back to the real spoiler alert.

One approach I will not take when using social media for my business is to be all business all the time. That might seem counterintuitive when growing your business on social media, but it really isn't.

If you've been following me for a while, you know I sprinkle in some stuff from my personal life and some fun stuff with my content. I also like to have fun when I engage with people online. Whether it's participating in a fun engagement post or using some fun emojis, I find that makes my time on social media more enjoyable.

You know what else it does? It helps make me more relatable to my audience. Building those connections is a key part to growing your business on social media.

I'm going to let you in on something that I wish more people knew about using social media to grow their business.

More is not always better.

When I've talked with other business owners about our early days using social media for our businesses, there was this feeling that we needed to be in all the places doing all the things all the time.

What happens when you do this?

For most of us, we burn out. When that happens, then we're likely to not show up at all or to show up sporadically.

You can actually grow your business by spending a few minutes engaging and posting just a few times a week. One platform can be plenty. The key is to figure out what is sustainable for you and stick to it.

Are you looking for some help with your social media? Visit my website (link in profile) to learn how I can make it more doable for you.

It's the end of the day (either your work day or the actual day, ie getting close to bedtime) and you realize you didn't post for your business....maybe not even all week!

Want to avoid this feeling of panic/guilt?

The best way to stay consistent with posting is to create and schedule your content ahead of time. It eliminates that last minute panic.

Your Instagram bio is a great way to grow your account and your business. Aside from trying to use keywords to describe your services, your bio is a good place to supplement what you're posting on Instagram.

How many times have you said something like this in your content? Link in bio, DM me for the link, etc.

It used to be that you could only have one link in your bio, so you'd either have to change it to match what you were offering in your content or tell people to DM you for certain links. Now you can have up to 5 links in your bio, so there's no need to constantly edit that link or get your info out some other way.

Here are some ideas for what links to include in your bio:

1. Your website

2. Your link to book calls/appointments

3. Link to your freebie

4. Affiliate links

5. Links to particular offers of yours

How many links are in your bio?

Negative comments on your content aren't fun, but they do happen, even when you're using social media for your business.

How you handle them can make a difference with how your audience sees you. I think you can do one of 2 things. You can ignore the comments. This is definitely a valid approach. That said, I think it is better to reply diplomatically. When you do that, you show your audience you can handle yourself like a professional and you create more engagement on your content. I think that's a win all the way around!

How do you handle negative comments on your content?

Social media expert advice?

I think it's really something you could take or leave, choose what works for you, etc.

That said, if you want to grow your business on social media, I'm a firm believer that you need 3 things:

1. Consistency. You need to show up on a regular basis. That doesn't need to mean every day, though.

2. Persistence. Keep showing up even when you're not seeing the results you want as fast as you want.

3. Patience. Social media growth takes time. Overnight success is rare.

Which one of these do you need to work on?

Today is a great day to clean some things up - and I'm not talking about my laptop screen (even if it could stand to be wiped down).

It's National Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day! This might have you thinking about things like closing out some tabs on your browser or cleaning up your inbox (I know I need to do those things), but don't forget about cleaning up your social media too.

Here are some ways to do that:

1. Take a look at your followers and who you're following. Remove/unfollow those who aren't your target audience, those who aren't aligned with your work, etc.

2. On Facebook, leave the Facebook Groups that no longer serve you.

3. Update your profiles/bios.

Could you stand to do one of these things? Which one?

It's 4th Quarter's Get to Know Your Customers Day!

Getting to know your audience is a great way to build connections that become clients. I also think it's important to let your audience get to know you, as a business owner.

So, in that spirit, I'll share a few fun facts about me and would love for you to do the same.

Random facts about Jen:

1. Summer is my favorite season, but I do love a good snow at least once during Winter.

2. Purple is my favorite color.

3. I don't wear makeup, but I do get monthly pedicures.

Share a random fact (or 2 or 3) about yourself in the comments.

Happy National Sports Day!

I'm a pretty big sports fan. I probably spend the most time watching my middle daughters play lacrosse, though they have/do play other sports. That said, I'm also a big fan of watching sports even if my kids aren't playing. This time of year, you can often find me watching the Ravens - on TV or at a game.

Do you like watching sports? Do you play any sports? Share in the comments.
