Gauteng’s water consumption has dropped, but it’s still 15% higher than the Department of Water and Sanitation’s targets. This puts strain on the Integrated Vaal River System and increases the risk of further restrictions.
Daily water use per metro:
Johannesburg: 1,646 million litres (290 million litres over target)
Ekurhuleni: 1,057 million litres (35 million litres over target)
Tshwane: 855 million litres (131 million litres over target)
Emfuleni: 303 million litres (64 million litres over target)
Gauteng municipalities are also losing 2.6 billion litres of water every day due to leaks, inefficiencies, and mismanagement.
We all need to do our part to save water and secure our future. Let’s be water-wise before restrictions tighten.
