💧 Big water news for Gauteng! 💧

To combat toxic acid mine drainage (AMD) and growing water stress, government plans to install reverse osmosis plants that’ll treat 1 million litres of polluted water per day in the Central and Eastern Witwatersrand basins. This high-tech fix will recycle contaminated mine water—loaded with heavy metals and acids—into usable water, easing pressure on our already scarce potable supply.

While environmental experts support the move, there are concerns over salt and manganese levels being released into the Vaal River. Still, this is a major step toward safer, smarter water use in Gauteng! 🌍🚰

Just because it looks clean, doesn’t mean it is. 🧐
Did you know that some bottled water brands don’t meet quality standards?
Here’s what to look out for when checking your store-bought still water:
✅ Check the TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) — ideally between 50-250ppm
✅ Look for bottling date & source of water
✅ Avoid water stored in sun-exposed bottles (plastics can leach chemicals)
✅ Use a home TDS meter to test it yourself

At Water Quality Greater West Rand, we test all types of water — even the ones in fancy bottles! 💦
Want to know what’s really in your water? Let’s test it!

💦 4 Ways To Drink More Water 💦

1️⃣ Always have water available – Keeping water within easy reach makes it more likely that you'll drink it throughout the day. Carry a reusable water bottle with you wherever you go—whether you’re at work, out for errands, or even at home. This simple habit can remind you to stay hydrated, ensuring you're constantly drinking water, especially during busy times.

2️⃣ Keep it cold – Drinking cold water can make it more refreshing and enjoyable, especially during hot weather. Cold water feels like a treat, and it can encourage you to drink more of it. Plus, cold water helps lower your body temperature, making it feel more satisfying after physical activity.

3️⃣ Choose water in restaurants – When dining out, opt for water instead of sugary drinks or sodas. Water is free in many places, so it's an easy, cost-effective choice that also supports your health. Not only will you stay hydrated, but you'll also avoid the extra calories and sugar from soft drinks.

4️⃣ Make sure it is of good quality – The quality of your water matters! Always ensure that the water you drink is clean and safe. This means choosing filtered water or bottled water from a trusted source if you're not sure about your tap water. High-quality water helps protect your health by minimizing the risk of contamination and unpleasant substances.

10/03/2025

Gauteng’s water consumption has dropped, but it’s still 15% higher than the Department of Water and Sanitation’s targets. This puts strain on the Integrated Vaal River System and increases the risk of further restrictions.

Daily water use per metro:
Johannesburg: 1,646 million litres (290 million litres over target)
Ekurhuleni: 1,057 million litres (35 million litres over target)
Tshwane: 855 million litres (131 million litres over target)
Emfuleni: 303 million litres (64 million litres over target)

Gauteng municipalities are also losing 2.6 billion litres of water every day due to leaks, inefficiencies, and mismanagement.

We all need to do our part to save water and secure our future. Let’s be water-wise before restrictions tighten.

The Gauteng Water Security Dashboard shows that overall water consumption across Gauteng has decreased, however, the levels remain above the water use efficiency targets in all metropolitans except Ekurhuleni. 🚰 Johannesburg Faces Growing Water Crisis!🚰 The EFF has named the City of Johannesburg as the worst-affected in Gauteng for water-related issues. Amid ongoing **water-shedding, aging infrastructure, and high demand**, they marched to Johannesburg Water’s offices, demanding:

💦 A state of disaster declaration
💦 Urgent upgrades to water pipelines
💦 Tamper-proof infrastructure
💦 A budget prioritizing maintenance

With **26% of Joburg’s water systems in critical condition**, recent supply cuts have **left hospitals and courts struggling**. While financial aid is available for low-income households, **those who can pay but don’t will face disconnections.**

Is it time for **urgent intervention** before the crisis worsens? What are your thoughts? 💭
