🚱 Water Alert: Johannesburg & Ekurhuleni Residents

Major water disruptions are currently affecting large parts of Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni due to emergency repairs and planned maintenance by Rand Water. Areas impacted include Soweto, Randburg, Roodepoort, Lenasia, Eldorado Park, and more. Residents may experience low to no water pressure for several days, with no confirmed restoration timeline.

Johannesburg Water is coordinating with ward councillors to deploy water tankers and identify delivery points. In Ekurhuleni, maintenance from May 29 to June 3 will affect areas like Benoni, Katlehong, and Springs, with potential outages lasting up to 107 hours.

What You Can Do:

Store water for essential use.

Use water sparingly.

🚨 Water Outage Alert for Johannesburg Residents 🚨

Rand Water is currently conducting emergency repairs on a burst F1/F39 bulk pipeline, leading to significant water supply disruptions across several areas in Johannesburg. To facilitate the repair work, pumping from the Eikenhof Pump Station has been halted.

Affected Areas:

Soweto
Commando System
Randburg/Roodepoort System
Deep South

Residents in these areas may experience low water pressure or complete outages. Rand Water's Chief Executive, Sipho Mosai, has assured the public that technical teams are working diligently to complete the repairs. The complexity of the repair is heightened due to the high water pressure in the pipeline.

Johannesburg Water is coordinating with ward councillors to deploy water tanks to the most affected areas. The status of reservoirs and towers in the impacted regions is currently critical, although systems in Midrand and Sandton remain stable.

Please stay informed through official channels and use water sparingly during this period. For more details, read the full article here:

🚰 Notice to Mogale City Residents: Temporary Water Discoloration

If you've noticed a yellow tint in your tap water recently, rest assured—it's temporary and safe to drink. The Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) has explained that the discoloration is due to increased organic material in the Vaal Dam following recent heavy rains. Rand Water is closely monitoring the water quality, and both Rand Water and MCLM confirm that the water meets the high standards set by the South African National Standards (SANS 241) for drinking water.

Regular quality checks are being conducted to ensure your water remains safe. The discoloration should clear up soon. For more details, read the full article here: https://www.citizen.co.za/krugersdorp-news/news-headlines/local-municipal-news/2025/05/07/discoloration-of-municipal-drinking-water-temporary-and-safe/

Despite concerns of drinking water discolouration, MCLM reassures residents it is still safe to drink.

🚨 Gauteng's Water Crisis: A Wake-Up Call 🚨 Gauteng is facing a severe water crisis, with 32 wastewater treatment plants in the Vaal River catchment discharging over 1.5 billion litres of wastewater daily. Many of these facilities are underperforming, leading to untreated sewage contaminating rivers and water systems, posing serious health risks.

The aging infrastructure and lack of maintenance have resulted in frequent water outages, some lasting up to 86 hours, affecting both residents and industries. Despite full dams, the distribution network fails, leaving taps dry.
Financial Times

Corruption and mismanagement have further exacerbated the problem, with funds meant for maintenance diverted, and unqualified contractors awarded tenders. A so-called "water mafia" exploits the situation, cutting off supplies and selling water back to desperate communities.

To address this, the government has established the National Water Resources Infrastructure Agency, aiming to involve the private sector in managing and maintaining water systems. However, urgent action is needed to prevent a full-blown catastrophe.
Financial Times

It's time for transparency, accountability, and investment in our water infrastructure. Clean water is not a luxury—it's a basic human right.

💧 Big water news for Gauteng! 💧

To combat toxic acid mine drainage (AMD) and growing water stress, government plans to install reverse osmosis plants that’ll treat 1 million litres of polluted water per day in the Central and Eastern Witwatersrand basins. This high-tech fix will recycle contaminated mine water—loaded with heavy metals and acids—into usable water, easing pressure on our already scarce potable supply.

While environmental experts support the move, there are concerns over salt and manganese levels being released into the Vaal River. Still, this is a major step toward safer, smarter water use in Gauteng! 🌍🚰

Just because it looks clean, doesn’t mean it is. 🧐
Did you know that some bottled water brands don’t meet quality standards?
Here’s what to look out for when checking your store-bought still water:
✅ Check the TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) — ideally between 50-250ppm
✅ Look for bottling date & source of water
✅ Avoid water stored in sun-exposed bottles (plastics can leach chemicals)
✅ Use a home TDS meter to test it yourself

At Water Quality Greater West Rand, we test all types of water — even the ones in fancy bottles! 💦
Want to know what’s really in your water? Let’s test it!
