"The [San José] mission is neat, beautiful,
and as equally well builded in material as in shape;
in the spiritual, as the temporal,
such that I have no words or hyperboles with which to declare its beauty."

How were the Indigenous residents treated during the mission era? There is much unknown, but we can get small glimpses into the treatment of the people through priest and friar's diary entries.

In 1768, a diary entry of a visiting missionary explained, "When the padres (/priests) become careless, the Indians, men and women, go out to the woods to their mitotes and dance with the infidel Indians. This is watched carefully and punished severely by those who catch them at fault in it."

What does punish severely mean? We cannot know, but think about other punishments the Europeans may have had during the 1700s and you may have a better idea. These harsh truths can be hard to hear, but they are an important part of the mission story and histories all around the world.
