Everyone is a dj until you have to rock a set on these...

One of my fondest memories of CoOp at Velvet room, was being the very first dj to spin a complete set from CDR's only and on these bad boys too. By today's standards, they were absolute pants but at the time, back in the late 90's early naughties, to me they made complete sense and figured this was the way forward to play exclusive music which other djs wouldn't have.

As majority of the Broken beat music would come from Goya music distribution, a lot of us who were djing at Coop were all playing pretty much the same records as there wasn't a great deal to choose from. As usual, it was your choice of imports you played which distinguished you from other djs.
Almost all the producer Dj's etc would swap new CDRs of tracks, remixes & demo songs we'd all be working on, many of which were not even signed or fresh from the studio that day so seemed criminal not to be playing them when the opportunity arose... I could literally play an entire two hour set of just unsigned unreleased Domu, Seiji or IG stuff alone.

I remember everyone at the studio thinking I was mental one evening for wanting to do an entire CDR set the coming weekend because those Denon CDJ's were sketchy at best but me being me, I'm reluctant to follow the crowd and wanted to be different. I also figured I could still do a better job blending than half the residents who couldn't mix readymade Polyfiller at the time, which coming from House into Broken beat, always totally irked me. To be fair though, Broken beat is a lot more complex and difficult to mix / blend than house music is and I too have had more than my fair share of train wreckage and cleared floors.

By now there were numerous floor fillers, anthems and other popular tracks that could whip the crowd into a frenzy or command several whooops, whistles and reloads, even more especially when the blend was in the pocket, something usually effortless for the likes of Domu, Seiji, Mark Force et al but this particular night was special. Literally every track or demo I played during my short 45 min set, the crowd went nuts. The energy in Coop was always incredible but tonight was different because they were hearing brand new unheard music for the very first time from the likes of Domu, D**o, IG, Bugz, Seiji, Modaji, restless Soul and so on... Each time a bass drop or some killer drums would come in, the frenzy would start again.
Most of the tracks would go on to be pivotal foundational music and from that night on, the whole dj-ing style at CoOp totally changed forever.

Anyways, a few ago I stumbled across an old mixtape Seiji & myself recorded practising three deck mixing with these and a couple 1210's back in 2002. Some of it is sketchy AF but it was a nice trip down memory lane.

Have you ever gone mad trying to remember a track or song and then spent years looking through your collection, playlists, going over old hard drives, search engines and all other kinds..?

This f**kin' track had literally ruined me; done my nut in for about 20 years!!
I got sent it on a white label and simply just put Yep! on one of the sides I used to rock at Velvet rooms Coop club. It was a bit commercial but quirky enough for me to play at a few of the gigs & festivals I had just started doing through agency. One particular gig, I was back stage with a whole bunch of artists and dj's etc and bumped into Roisin Murphy. Totally started fan-boying over this Donny One leg 2 Step dub I was playing at the time. [Think I played it in my set which was how we got talking] and to my amazement, she started fangirling all over Bugz In The Attic, telling me she was recording some new tracks and should hook up a collab or remix something.

I was just listening to an old 2002 mixtape with me & seiji practising back2back in one of the old broom cupboards we converted into the dj booth at the old Bitasuite studios we had. Thank f**k for Shazam and whomever uploaded this old nugget. I knew I wasn't going mad.

A year or so prior to Bugz In The Attic, the same year Phil Asher introduced me to outside BlackMarket records one summer afternoon, this was one of my favourite E.P comps I put together.
