I hate that I am writing this, but here we go:

The Writers Guild of Canada is facing the prospect of a strike, for much the same reasons as the Writers Guild of America went on strike last year. There are a bunch of issues on the table, like appropriate working conditions and appropriate compensation for our work. But the number one issue is that we want to protect our work from being taken over by AI. Producers are refusing to guarantee that AI wouldn't be used to develop concepts (which not only takes credits away from writers but much needed work), and that our scripts wouldn't be used to train AI (meaning, AI could learn how to write material based on our voices, so that we could be fired and AI could write shows for "free").

There are about 9 million reasons why this is terrible. Contrary to what you might have heard, generative AI doesn't actually create new material; it just takes existing work from artists without credit or compensation and mashes it into an unintelligible slurry. A venture capital firm that's one of the biggest backers of AI has straight up admitted that AI wouldn't be profitable, or even possible, if they had to pay for all the copyrighted material they were using. (And even without that, AI doesn't come cheap: ChatGPT costs $700,000 A DAY to operate because of the number of servers required). I've never been one to gamble. But staking the future of the industry on tech that only works through theft, that is exponentially more expensive than human writers, that potentially leaves you liable to legal action over copyright infringement, and that certainly cannot problem-solve or strategize or rewrite to meet the new budget or perform any of the hundreds of tasks writers perform every day in film and TV-- that seems to me to be a STAGGERINGLY bad bet.

But more than the myriad problems AI presents from a logistical standpoint, this is about good, talented, hard-working people facing the prospect of losing their livelihood. And it's about audiences losing their access to good, heartfelt, meaningful films and television. Everything you've ever loved to watch exists because someone brought their REAL mind and heart and experiences and perspective to the table, because they had something they wanted or needed to share, because a voice like theirs didn't exist on screen yet and they saw that absence and they fought to translate their vision onto screen. It's not just that I want to continue working (although I really really do, I LOVE to work), it's simply that I want art to continue to exist. I deserve that. You deserve that. Your children deserve that. We are all better than some regurgitated slurm that a computer spat out because it was cheaper in the short-term.

So, please -- if you work in the arts in any way, or if you want yourself and your children to continue to have access to GOOD work -- please show your support for the WGC. Share our posts, make our profile picture your profile picture, tell producers that you will not stand for this. Because the awful reality is, we will all find ourselves in this position sooner rather than later. If our work can be devalued and dehumanized, yours can too. (That goes for you too, producers!) It's scary as hell, but let's not be afraid -- let's stand together and say that we're not gonna let this happen.

(Also, literally WOE BETIDE YOU if you use generative AI! I've seen a lot of brutal AI art circulating recently and have MORE THAN ONCE thought to myself, "oh that absolutely is using concepts from highly profitable films", and if you tried to profit from using that crappy AI art you'd be flattened by the force of a million lawyers! So good luck I guess!)
