American Short Fiction selects and publishes short stories, short shorts, novellas, and novel excerpts by established and super new writers. It is our goal to discover and publish the best fiction we possibly can—stories that dive into the wreck, that stretch the reader between recognition and surprise, that conjure a particular world with delicate expertise—stories that take a different way home.

Last Friday, we were thrilled to host the first installment of Story Sessions, a literary series that brings together exceptional authors in a freewheeling discussion about the power of stories and the ways we share them. ✨

Hundreds of folks gathered in the historic King-Seabrook Chapel at to listen to nationally award-winning novelist Percival Everett in conversation with distinguished poet Roger Reeves about the craft of storytelling.

We were so happy to work with , a bookstore and community space in Austin that specializes in small press fiction, non-fiction, poetry, comics, and works in translation. 📚

Special thanks to the City of Austin Economic Development Department, Humanities Texas, and the Alice Kleberg Reynolds Foundation for their support of this event series and to our partners at Huston-Tillotson University and the University of Texas John L. Warfield Center for African and African American Studies.

We’re so pleased to share that our newest issue is out now and available for sale on our website.

“I’m in transition,” the narrator of Peter Orner’s sparse, perfectly moving little story says to his date, by way of apology for the obvious restlessness, the various disappointments of his life. But he also means that, like all of the characters in our new fall issue, facing challenges ranging from infertility in Kashmir to the loss of a parent in Brooklyn to the loss of a safe childhood innocence in Albuquerque, he’s full of possibility, that there is still time for changes, revolutions, even, in his story. Fall, after all, is as good a season for change as any—in its way, it offers as many fresh starts as spring.

Featuring new stories by Matthew Lawrence Garcia (.g3), Laura Grothaus (), Joshua Henkin (), John McManus (), Joanna Novak, Peter Orner (), Lucy Tan (), and Zahid Rafiq, this latest issue is one you don’t want to miss. Cover Art by Kyle Ragsdale ().
