A Weekend in Atlantic City!
When Garden State Comic Fest announced their Atlantic City edition, we couldn’t wait to go! The event lasted for two days, and promised to be packed with comic creators, fans, and enough fun to keep them all occupied for two days! We had lots of fun talking to everyone about our books, and we also enjoyed making the rounds and seeing what others were up to. Some of my favorite indie artists present were Soldiers of Fortune Comics (who were right across from us, so we got to look at their awesome setup and banners all weekend), Unlikely Heroes Studios, AHS Visions/6S Studios, and the Great State of No Where. (Check the bottom for links to everyone mentioned!) I was impressed right away by Soldiers of Fortune Comics’ banners, I couldn’t wait to pick up their Ironhorse industrial fantasy series (of which two issues are currently out). They were extremely friendly, and I ended up leaving the table with both issues of Ironhorse as well as two other books set in the Ironhorse universe. If you enjoy a good story, and especially if you enjoy less traditional fantasy settings, you owe it to yourself to check out Soldier of Fortune’s books. Gavin Spector’s world feels very fleshed out, and I absolutely loved the lore bits found on the inside covers of each issue. AHS Visions/6S Studios were selling the first issue of their indie series called “The Six Swords”. When I heard them compare it to Samurai Jack, I just had to take it home, and I think they’re definitely right to make that comparison. It’s a stylish and fun book, with a great mix of action and situational comedy that actually had me laughing out loud once or twice. I can’t recommend it enough, and I can’t wait for issue #2!
It was clear right off the bat that Unlikely Heroes Studios has been doing this for a few years. Their indie Kickstarter success “Super!” has 6 fantastic action-packed issues out, and they’ve also released the first issue of a new post-apocalyptic series entitled “The Surgeon”. Thanks to a great deal they had going at the convention (a 5-issue volume, single-issue book, and an 11 x 17 print all for $25? Sign me up!) I ended up taking home all seven books and a fantastic comic-book-style print of the Planet Express crew from Futurama! “Super!” is the fresh, humorous superhero series that you didn’t know you needed, and “The Surgeon” has me anxiously awaiting the second issue. UHS does excellent work, and Zack Dolan was one of the friendliest people I met this past weekend!
Daniel Austin from the Great State of No Where was displaying several large artworks, all of which I thought were very impressive! One particular more abstract piece really caught my eye, and I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on him in the future. He was very easy to talk to, and it was clear that he has a passion for his work, something I really admire. I strongly encourage you to check out the works he has up on his website! And these were just some of my favorites! There were so many dedicated and talented artists and creators, and they all contributed to making the event a success. We definitely had a fun experience at GSCF: Atlantic City Edition, and we can’t wait for our next convention! (*cough* OC CON in Ocean City *cough*) I hope at least a few of these artists will be there, because I’m excited to see what they do in the future. Thanks for reading, and make sure to check our page often for updates on the work we’re doing and the events we’re attending! -Ethan Hull Artist, Hull & Mio Comics
