TRIBUTE TO A COOL GENTLEMAN, A TALENTED, CLASSY & STYLISH GOALKEEPER.

A gem of a gentleman Wandeh Njie was. A standout goalkeeper of his generation from Roots Fc where he made his name as talented young keeper before moving to Real De Banjul where he innately scribed his name as a legend winning all domestic titles with the whites and setting up a very high standard for other greats like Pa Dembo Touray to follow.

At national team level Wandeh was amongst the list of young talented goalkeepers who were expected to succeed the likes of Sang Ndong who moved into coaching and management earlier than anticipated. Alongside the iconic George Lobba they had a competitive but a very healthy and respectful competition as the Scorpion number one as well as at club level, as both represented the two fiercest rivals in our league in Wallidan and Real De Banjul.

Probably Wandeh Njie’s most prolific performance in goal for The Scorpions was against Ghana 🇬🇭 on the 12th November, 1994 during The AFCON 96 qualifiers at the Independence Stadium. Despite Ghana and Fortuna Koln superstar Charles Akonor brilliant wonderful performance and two goals with his redoubtable left foot, Wandeh made multiple brilliant saves and was arguably our best player. The game ended 1:2 in favor of the visitors but “Boy Wandeh” and the scorpions as underdogs gave the Black Stars who were probably the best team in Africa back then a befitting contest.

Wandeh’s charisma was so graciously painted all over his personality. His contiguous demanor in his playing style, his long sleeved goalkeeper vest alongside the fashionable gloves caught everyone’s attention making him one of the most well-dressed, stylish and class act goalkeepers of his generation. Fly high legend.

Condolences to his immediate family and friends

To ensure the success of the festival, robust security measures have been put in place, with various agencies coming together to safeguard public safety and maintain order throughout the event.

CSP Kemo Sanneh part of the Security Committee for the Banjul Cultural Festival, emphasized that without proper security, the event would not be possible. A well-coordinated security strategy is in place, with various agencies such as the Office of National Security, Police Forces, and the Drug Law Enforcement Agency working together to manage potential risks and maintain order.

"People attend the festival for different reasons, with some seeking enjoyment, while others may have different motives. In response, the security teams are taking no chances this year and have put several measures in place, including closely monitoring traffic flow, creating designated parking areas, and ensuring visitors enter designated locations to avoid congestion." Sanneh said.

He also mentioned that vehicles coming from Kombo will be directed to use the Burn Road, while government officials will have access to the main highway towards the Independence drive and also includes proper screening.

Sanneh further assured the public that plainclothes officers will be stationed in the crowd, blending in with festival-goers to enhance surveillance and address any potential security concerns. With a team of more than 200 officers deployed across the city on event days.
