Apartamento

Apartamento An everyday life interiors magazine. A home sweet home is not curated or produced by acquiring a perfect arrangement of chairs, lamps and friends.

"For too many people, being happy at home is pretty much an abstract idea, something they can’t know or imagine, until it appears on some taste maker’s must-have list, or in a magazine, or reposted on Tumblr. A real living space is made from living, not decorating. A bored materialist can’t understand that a house has to become a home. It happens, not through perfection but by participation." ‘I first met the photographic artist and printer Gary Schneider and his partner, the performer John Erdman, two years ago in Manhattan. On a warm October evening, we convened over dinner at a Venetian restaurant in Chelsea to discuss the life and death of their close friend, photographer Peter Hujar, whose biography I am writing… I walked back to my hotel with an elated sense that I had come very close to the deep and personal history of a remarkable period of New York artmaking’.

—John Douglas Millar ()

Photographic artist and master printer Gary Schneider () and his partner, performer John Erdman, sit down with for Apartamento issue #34, while Jeremy Liebman () photographs their home in Brookhaven Hamlet, Long Island.

Photographic artist and master printer Gary Schneider () and his partner, performer John Erdman, have spent over two decades transforming a former fisherman’s cottage in Brookhaven Hamlet, Long Island, into a haven of art and a record of a shared life in culture and aesthetic consideration.

From their first meeting in New York in the late ’60s to their shared experience of running the Schneider/Erdman Photography Lab—whose clients included some of the most influential photographers of the late 20th century such as Nan Goldin, Irving Penn, and Steven Meisel—their practise has been marked by a raw dedication to their craft and the weight of survival, both personal and political, through an era of immense loss.

Their friendship and collaboration with photographer Peter Hujar significantly influenced both their personal and professional paths. It was Peter’s wish that Gary be the only person sanctioned to make prints of his work, a legacy now preserved alongside works by artists like David Wojnarowicz, Lorna Simpson, and Zanele Muholi.

For Apartamento issue #34, the pair sat down with John Douglas Millar (), who had first met them two years prior to discuss Hujar for the biography he’s writing. Today, the exhibition ‘Peter Hujar – Eyes Open in the Dark’, co-curated by Gary and John, opens at Raven Row, London (), illuminating the full scope of Hujar’s later photography, from intimate portraits to stark studies of animals and cityscapes, capturing his creative resurgence and the darker shift of the early 1980s amid the AIDS crisis.

From Times Square’s gritty ‘80s to Bushwick today, Jane Dickson () has emerged as an explorer of the in-between—the spaces we slip in and out of, fleetingly haunted yet undeniably real. A digital animation pioneer, she first made her mark in 1978 designing visuals for Times Square’s first electronic billboard, flashing countdowns to midnight beneath the iconic Ball. Decades later, she cemented her connection to the city with The Revelers, 70 life-size mosaics in the Times Square subway station, celebrating the eclectic crowds of New Year’s Eve. Just days ago, she was selected to design a stunning 14-foot medallion for the arrivals plaza at JFK Terminal 6, welcoming travelers to NYC with an embodiment of the city’s boundless energy.

Yet Jane’s story stretches far beyond this neon-lit legacy. Described by her close friend, photographer Nan Goldin, as ‘the painter of American darkness’, Jane’s art taps into the surreal, eerie beauty of demolition derbies, Las Vegas casinos, highways, and street signage—all done with a curious but suspicious eye, reminding us of the potential danger that lurks beneath the sanguine surface.

For Apartamento magazine #34, Leah Singer () sits down with Jane to discuss the ways in which her art is shaped by a prismatic blend of fear, fascination, darkness, and motherhood.

‘An arrangement of things is not just an aesthetic expression; it is a communicational act. In many cases, arrangement is language-like’.

—Leonard Koren ()

We’re taking a look back at the original cover of Leonard Koren’s Arranging Things: A Rhetoric of Object Placement, his vibrant manifesto on the art of placing objects just so.

First published in 2003, it quickly sold out, becoming an impossible-to-find cult classic. We were thrilled to bring out a new and revised edition last year, and our reprint presents artist Nathalie Du Pasquier’s original 23 paintings in a larger, full-page format with a new foreword from Leonard.

For an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at how their collaborative project came together, check out an interview with Nathalie and Leonard in the Stories section of our website and then grab your copy of Arranging Things: A Rhetoric of Object Placement in stores and in our online shop!

‘I always knew, even when I was at Saint Martins, that I couldn’t work long-term in the fashion industry as standard… The pace is punishing and constant. You do so much research, but you’re onto the next collection before you’ve even finished the current one. The guilt of fashion is enormous for me. It’s such a massive polluter. And yet, I love it…. I suppose my whole life has been attempting to navigate a way of doing fashion that I feel comfortable with’.

—Beca Lipscombe ()

For Apartamento magazine issue #34, Hugo Macdonald () interviews designer Beca Limpscombe. Kasia Bobula () photographs her in her Edinburgh home, an old whisky bond where a mahogany stairwell is reborn as a vanity table, a cork-covered floor becomes a childhood playground, and fast-fashion relics a study in the evolution of manufacturing.

Amid Leith’s maritime air and the enduring embrace of an old whisky bond, Beca Lipscombe () has found her inspiration as one half of Atelier E.B (.b), the label she runs with Brussels-based Lucy McKenzie that teases the intense yearning and unrequited love affair existing between fashion and art.

While she claims London as her tempestuous lover, it’s in Edinburgh, her steadfast and grounding hometown, where she finds the space to think, design, and connect to the rhythms of her community. Today, she shares a home with her mother and brother, bound by creativity and the gravity of loss—‘Weavers tend to look out for each other’, she says.

In conversation with Hugo Macdonald () for Apartamento magazine issue #34, Beca reflects on design’s inquisitive grip on memory and functionality, fashion’s punishing pace and anthropological reach, and the art of rummaging through discarded garments to find new beauty. Photography by Kasia Bobula () captures a designer who navigates the seams between the personal and the communal, the beautiful and the functional.

Join artist Danny Fox () in the fabled Cornish village where spent his childhood, full of the haunted landscapes that shape his paintings, which often depict life on the edge. Ahead of his show, The Rain It Raineth Every Day, at in LA, which ended last week, Fox opened up about the homecoming—and subsequent heartbreak—that inspired his latest series of works.
In conversation with Meara Sharma () and through the lens of F***y Latour-Lambert (), Fox opened the doors to his physical and metaphorical drawing boards: a home bathed in a quiet Cornish glow, a studio filled with sonorous canvases, and a mind moving between slow reflection and rapid motion, navigating the paintbrush as both remedy for and inheritor of emotional unravelling.

You can now see Danny’s work in Copenhagen () starting this week through December 14th. To read the full interview, buy your copy of the new issue in our online shop or on newsstands worldwide!
