Leading together with Babita Spinelli
Babita Spinelli
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on public mental health. Among the many negative consequences are sickness and bereavement, increased uncertainty, decreased human connection, and lost opportunities for work and education. However, it has also led to significant discoveries. We are becoming more aware as a society that mental health is critical, and that people who are suffering frequently lack the resources they require.

While some CEOs have dabbled in psychotherapy for years, the added stress of running their organizations and workforces during the coronavirus pandemic sparked a surge in interest from C-suite executives seeking more mental health support, according to sources.

Erin O’Donnell: Ushering the Growth of the Lucrative Cannabis Industry
While the world has been dominated by disruptions such as the Covid-19 pandemic, one business sector has come of age. The Cannabis industry, which was once frowned upon, is now one of the fastest-growing industries in America. The global legal ma*****na market size was valued at USD 16.7 billion in 2022 and is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25.4% from 2023 to 2030.

Although the growing demand for legal ma*****na continues across the globe, many are skeptical about being associated with this industry.

Earlier, in 2003 when Celene had told her family that she wanted to be a hairstylist they were supportive but hesitant. Her father, a business owner, said “I will support you, but I’m worried you won’t be able to pay your bills”.

Meditation has the potential to aid in the treatment of children suffering from traumas, difficult diagnoses, or other stressors.
Children actively meditating experience lower activity in parts of the brain involved in rumination, mind-wandering and depression, our team found in the first brain-imaging study of young people under 18 years old. Over-activity in this collection of brain regions, known as the default mode network, is thought to be involved in the generation of negative self-directed thoughts – such as “I am such a failure” – that are prominent in mental disorders like depression.

In our study, we compared a simple form of distraction – counting backward from 10 – with two relatively simple forms of meditation:

College students are increasingly identifying in ways other than’she’ and ‘he.’
When students today fill out their college applications, they are not just identifying as “she” or “he.” More than 3% of incoming college students use a different set of pronouns. That’s according to my analysis of the more than 1.2 million applications submitted for the 2022-23 school year through the Common App, an online application platform used by more than 900 colleges.

While 3% may not seem like a lot, it represents nearly 37,000 students.

Quiet quitting is a new name for an old industrial action method.
The average UK worker now carries out approximately 22 days’ worth of overtime a year. Meanwhile, inflation is at a 40-year high of 10.1%, and real pay is dropping 2.8% – the fastest decline since records began in 2001.

In response, the trend of “quiet quitting” is emerging. This attitude encourages employees to fulfil their job duties without subscribing to “work is life” culture to guide their career and stand out to their managers.

4 strategies for successfully hiring refugees
Over five million Ukrainians have fled their country, and more than 68,000 have made it to Canada. If they haven’t already, most will begin seeking employment in their new countries soon. In the face of this, it’s important that employers are ready to hire refugees in a way that benefits everyone.

Our research sheds light on the experiences of newly hired refugees and offers best practices for employers. Based on the experiences of refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran from 28 German companies, we discovered the best ways employers can integrate refugee employees into the workplace.

Why are some people mosquito magnets while others are not?
It’s rare to attend an outdoor party in warm weather without hearing people complain about mosquitoes. They swat away, sit in campfire smoke, cover up with blankets and eventually just give up and go indoors. On the other end of the spectrum, there are plenty of people who don’t seem bothered by mosquitoes in the slightest.

As a medical entomologist who’s worked with mosquitoes for more than 40 years, I’m often asked why some people seem to be mosquito magnets while others are oblivious to these blood-feeding pests buzzing all around them.

Before sunscreens and parasols, human skin was more resistant to the sun.
Human beings have a conflicted relationship with the sun. People love sunshine, but then get hot. Sweat gets in your eyes. Then there are all the protective rituals: the sunscreen, the hats, the sunglasses. If you stay out too long or haven’t taken sufficient precautions, your skin lets us you know with an angry sunburn. First the heat, then the pain, then the remorse.

Were people always this obsessed with what the sun would do to their bodies? As a biological anthropologist who has studied primates’ adaptations to the environment, I can tell you the short answer is “no,” and they didn’t need to be.

02/09/2022

A landmark trial has found that coronary artery stents have no benefit in the treatment of heart failure.
Every year, 60,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with heart failure, and many are treated with stents. In a large new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, my colleagues and I discovered that these procedures are unnecessary.

Heart failure is where the heart muscle becomes weakened, leading to symptoms of severe breathlessness that may cause premature death. The commonest cause is blocked blood vessels that reduce blood supply to the heart muscle. This is known as coronary artery disease.

A person with heart failure is treated with medication and sometimes with specialised pacemakers. Despite this treatment, many patients die prematurely or are admitted to hospital with worsening symptoms.

People with heart failure also sometimes have a procedure to insert a stent – a small metal tube that is used to unblock a coronary artery. Stents are placed into the heart arteries by a cardiologist through tubes inserted either into the wrist or the groin and guided by X-rays. Trials have shown that stents are a very effective treatment for people with heart attacks and angina, but their effects in patients with heart failure have remained uncertain.

Some cardiologists had noticed improvements in patients’ symptoms and heart function after stenting, but researchers could not tell if these improvements were directly linked to the stents, or would have happened anyway with medications. Without proper research, treatment guidelines for the use of stents in patients with heart failure varied, with the NHS recommending against stenting and European guidelines recommending it in certain patients.

In this latest study, the REVIVED-BCIS2 trial, led by Professor Divaka Perera, we tested whether treatment with stents helped patients to live longer or to stay out of hospital. The trial was a collaboration of 40 NHS Hospitals in the UK and ran from 2013 to 2020.

Patients could be included in the trial if they had severely weakened heart muscle and extensive blockages of the coronary arteries. They also had specialised heart scans performed, so that stenting could be targeted to the areas of heart muscle that were most likely to recover.

Shakespeare’s contribution to the English language: five myths
Shakespeare’s language is widely considered to represent the pinnacle of English. But that status is underpinned by multiple myths – ideas about language that have departed from reality (or what is even plausible). Those myths send us down rabbit holes and make us lose sight of what is truly impressive about Shakespeare – what he did with his words.

The Encyclopedia of Shakespeare’s Language project at Lancaster University, deploying large-scale computer analyses, has been transforming what we know about Shakespeare’s language. Here, incorporating some of its findings, we revisit five things that you probably thought you knew about Shakespeare but are actually untrue.

1. Shakespeare coined a vast number of words
Well, he did, but not as many as people think – even reputable sources assume more than 1,000. The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust puts it at 1,700, but carefully add that this number concerns words whose earliest appearance is in Shakespeare’s works.

The word “hobnail” first appears in a text attributed to Shakespeare, but it’s difficult to imagine it arose from a creative poetic act. More likely, it was around in the spoken language of the time and Shakespeare’s use is the earliest recording of it. Estimates of just how many words Shakespeare supposedly coined do not usually distinguish between what was creatively coined by him and what was first recorded in a written document attributed to him.

Even if you don’t make that distinction and include all words that appear first in a work attributed to Shakespeare, whether coined or recorded, numbers are grossly inflated. Working with the literature and linguistics academics Jonathan Hope and Sam Hollands, we’ve been using computers to search millions of words in texts pre-dating Shakespeare. With this method, we have found that only around 500 words do seem to first appear in Shakespeare.

Of course, 500 is still huge and most writers neither coin a new word nor produce a first recording.

02/09/2022

The low-risk alcohol consumption guidelines in Canada have been reduced to six drinks per week. Here’s why.
New Canadian guidelines for reducing risks to health from alcohol use were released for public comment this week. Key messages include:

drinking less alcohol is better for health;
health risks escalate quickly above six standard drinks per week, especially for women;
do not exceed two drinks per day to minimize risks;
alcohol is a carcinogen;
alcohol containers should carry prominent health warnings.
You may be asking, who took it upon themselves to give this advice to the public and upon what basis? I am a scientist at the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research and was a member of the panel that generated this advice. I have also advised or been a panelist on four previous guideline committees over the past 30 years including for Australia, the United Kingdom and Canada.

I try to explain here some of the underlying science and how it has evolved, principally why drinking guidelines internationally have lowered definitions of “low-risk” alcohol use.

Why have the guidelines changed?
The new guideline development was led by the Ottawa-based Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA) with funding from Health Canada. The previous 2011 guidelines were far more generous: low-risk drinking was defined as up to 10 standard drinks per week for women and 15 for men.

A standard drink is a mystery to many people, not least because unlike in some other countries (e.g. Australia and New Zealand) alcohol containers here do not state how many standard drinks they contain. In Canada, a standard drink is defined as 13.45 grams of ethanol, which corresponds to typical serve sizes of average strength beer, wine and spirits:

341 millilitres of beer or cider (5 per cent alcohol),
142 millilitres of wine (12 per cent alcohol) or
43 millilitres of spirits (40 per cent alcohol.
What has changed in the past 11 years? Why is an expert committee now recommending much lower guidelines? I was also a member of the panel for the 2011 guidelines, which were based upon the simple idea that low-risk drinking was a level that didn’t increase health risks above that of an abstainer.

Actionable Tips To Set Up A Green Business From Scratch
Sustainability is an emerging trend in the corporate world, and it is here to stay. Established enterprises are embracing it, and startups are willing to go the extra mile from the outset. In fact, you are in a better place to go green as a startup entrepreneur. Putting sustainability on your checklist makes sense, even if it requires a little extra investment. It can give you a competitive advantage as a provider and employer because everyone wants to collaborate with organizations that do their bit for the environment. Fortunately, setting up a green business from scratch is easier than you imagine. Here are some valuable insights from entrepreneurs who have been there and done it.

Begin with green business ideas
Since you are in the initial stages, you have the opportunity to begin with a green business idea. Starting from scratch is easier than refurbishing products and processes for an existing business. Think of bringing sustainability into your offering through investment in energy-efficient machinery, eco-friendly packaging, and paperless processes. Choose eco-conscious suppliers and partners for long-term collaborations. Implementing these ideas may entail some extra burden, but it is worthwhile.

Choose an eco-friendly location
Choosing the apt location for your startup premises is another way to go green from scratch. Whether you buy or rent, ensure that the land developer has been thorough with Environmental Permitting and due diligence. Setting up at a location over wetlands or a reserved area is the last thing you should do as you may face regulatory problems down the line. Partner with a reputable land developer and double-check the project specifications to be extra sure about environmental compliance.

7 Simple Ways To Provide Great IT Support To Remote Workers
For businesses in Tampa and other parts of the United States, providing their remote teams with reliable IT support can be challenging. This is because remote workers typically have different needs from their office-based counterparts. In this blog, we take a look at some of the ways in which your company can back your remote teams with great tech support.

Provide 24/7 IT support
IT problems can happen at any time, so it’s essential that someone is ready to accept inquiries and provide troubleshooting steps when someone in your team needs it. This is especially critical if you have remote workers with open or shifting work schedules.

Take full advantage of the cloud
Maximizing the cloud can resolve or alleviate some problems remote workers are at risk of facing. Take data loss, for instance. Cyberattacks or sudden hardware malfunctions can result in remote workers losing access to business data. If you implement cloud-based backups, your employees will always have copies of their files.

Issue work devices
Providing your employees with work devices, such as laptops and smartphones, can be pricey indeed, but the benefits are worth looking into. For one, you know the devices and their characteristics, including their make and model. That said, your IT support team can provide troubleshooting recommendations that are specific to those traits.

What’s more, you can have greater control over the security of company-issued devices. For example, you can register mobile devices to mobile device management (MDM) solutions. MDM lets you remotely manage and monitor the status of all the devices in your workforce. You can also enforce security policies, such as password protection and screen lock, remotely.
