Welcome to WRC Paraguay!. The country does actually have a rich culture of rallying. This year's Trans Itapua Rally had 22 Rally2 cars on the entry list in addition to smaller class cars, of course. The roads seem like a mix between Safari and Argentina. Just some work to do on spectator control.

I think there are four things wrong with Saudi Arabia in terms of WRC:
1) Human rights issues
2) Lack of rally culture (although they claim otherwise, no local rallies are run in the country. The "all-woman rally" was a navigation rally.)
3) Lack of candidate event
4) 10 year deal straight away

"This is our greatest option for the Middle East."

Maybe the best paying option? Countries like Qatar, Oman, Lebanon and Jordan are arranging rallies all the time and have drivers competing in MERC, unlike the Saudis. Coincidentally, human rights issues are smaller in those.

The rally world was shaken a little over a week ago when the WRC promoter announced a massive deal with Saudi Arabia.

What I find interesting about this shortened Rally Italia Sardegna is that there will be less road sweeping.

The difference in overall kilometres is not that massive, and with a little longer Sunday, 300 km could have been doable.

At the same time, the whole rally will only have two services with mechanics as Saturday is done with only a tyre fitting zone, so the endurance aspect is there as well.

Everyone is talking about the "new" short WRC format of Rally Italia Sardegna but in fact it was done similarly in Arctic and autumn Rally Finlands of 2021.

Ypres 2021 also had Friday morning shakedown but full 8 stages in the evening, thanks to short liaisons.

Rally Turkey 2020 also used this format but with less kilometres and Rally Estonia 2020 was run more like an ERC event with only super special on Friday.
