Leadership is more of an art than a science.

And it's a lifelong learning process.

The 4Q's is an intriguing way to consider the different dimensions leaders must excel at.

INTELLIGENCE QUOTIENT - IQ

IQ tests were first given in 1904 by Alfred Binet to help identify children that needed extra help in French schools. Over the past century, the interest in IQ has remained high across the world.

Whilst top leaders typically have a higher IQ on average, IQ alone won't get you very far to become an effective leader.
..enter EQ!

EMOTIONAL QUOTIENT - EQ

Although the term Emotional Quotient first appeared in 1964, it really took off in 1995 with Daniel Goleman’s book “Emotional Intelligence”.

Today it’s widely acknowledged that to be truly effective, leaders must develop the five dimensions of EQ: empathy, effective communication or social skills, self-awareness, self-regulation, and motivation.

This is very challenging - because leaders are under constant pressure.

There's a constant focus on results, KPI’s and key stakeholder interests.

Often the hard things (results) are in focus, not EQ.

So, leaders that do embrace and develop EQ are those that truly multiply their potential for growth and impact.

But that only has value if you are taking the organisation in the right direction… which is where SQ comes in.

STRATEGY QUOTIENT - SQ

The Oxford languages definition of strategy is "a plan of action or policy designed to achieve a major or overall aim."

Phenomenal strategists have the ability to develop a strategy that builds on the collective experience of the organisation, market dynamics, organisational capabilities and constraints, key trends... And then set that in motion so that people are excited to charge ahead.
.. But SQ without ex*****on is merely a daydream - so, we need XQ to get results.

EX*****ON QUOTIENT - XQ

There is no dictionary definition of XQ, probably because it remains somewhat elusive and so challenging.

XQ is obviously crucial to sustain an organisation and momentum.

The leaders who are strong in this get results no matter what.

But it needs to exist in harmony with the other Q's, otherwise individuals, teams and the organisation cannot follow or perform in the long-term.

THE FOUR QUOTIENTS - EQ, IQ, SQ, and XQ - are interdependent.

IQ is a foundation, EQ enables collaboration, SQ maps the journey, and XQ drives us to the destination.

Leaders must strive to hone and develop and balance these four quotients to unlock their full potential.

Consider where you are and how you can become stronger.

Keen to hear in the comments which one you think is the most important.

Research tells us that cognitive diversity makes a group smarter. Two heads are, indeed, better than one, and many heads are even better, especially when everyone is willing to share their expertise and opinions. While diverse thinking and disagreements can be uncomfortable, they are more likely to....

Research over the past few decades has shown us that the most important leadership qualities are centered around soft skills and emotional intelligence. But do these skills point to deeper competencies? A survey of 195 leaders from more than 30 global organizations suggests that there are five major...

Interesting Fundamentals of decision making !

A decision is not an event. It is a process. This means any decision is only as strong as its weakest link. Which of these 6 links is your weakest?

We often think of decisions as events, sudden moments when a choice is made between options or a yes or no is decided. But, that’s not what decisions are really like.

Decisions are processes that unfold over time. There’s preparation, options, evaluations, negotiations, implementation, and so on.

This doesn’t mean people are aware of this process. Often they are not. Also, the process can go very fast, making it seem like an event.

To unravel the complexity of decisions, it is useful to see them as a chain of aspects or questions. These six are critical:

1. Clear Values. What do I want?
2. Create Alternatives: What can I do?
3. Useful Information: What do I need to know?
4. Sound Reasoning: Am I thinking straight?
5. Commitment to Follow Through: Will I do it?
6. Helpful Frame: What am I really deciding?

I find these six excellent questions that we should ask ourselves more often when making a decision. Because, if one is missing, the decision breaks apart. Think about it:

• If Clear Values is missing, there is no reason or purpose guiding the decision
• If Crate Alternatives is missing, you too easily pick the first convenient option that pops up
• If Useful Information is missing, you make uninformed decisions
• If Sound Reasoning is missing, you jump to conclusions and make mistakes
• If Commitment to Follow Through is missing, you will not actually live the decision
• If Helpful Frame is missing, you will never make the actual decisions.

All six voids will break the chain of events and lead to bad decisions.

We all spend too much time complaining at work. Why? Because it feels good, requires minimal risk, and it’s easy. When we complain about someone else, the uncomfortable feelings begin to dissipate because complaining releases our pent up energy. That’s why we say things like “I’m venting” ...

A new study suggests that while some men still fall back on the classic identity of a breadwinner, others adopt a modern identity of a “breadsharer.” In-depth interviews with 42 heterosexual male consultants showed that more than half (about 60%) value their wives’ careers. These men, the brea...

Each year, over one hundred CEOs retire from the S&P 1000. Even in the most well-oiled CEO succession processes, one piece is almost always missing: preparing the current CEO for the next phase in his or her career. SIX LEADERSHIP PRINCIPLES TO LEARN FROM AN EAGLE

1. Eagles fly Alone and at High Altitudes.
They don't fly with sparrows, ravens, and other small birds.

MEANING; Stay away from narrow-minded people, those that bring you down. Eagle flies with Eagles. Keep good company.

2. Eagles have an Accurate Vision. They have the ability to focus on something as far as 5km away. No matter the obstacles, the eagle will not move his focus from the prey until he grabs it.

MEANING; Have a vision and remain focused no matter what the obstacles and you will succeed.

3. Eagles do not Eat Dead things. They Feed only on Fresh Prey.

MEANING; Do not rely on your past success, keep looking for new frontiers to conquer. Leave your past where it belongs, in the past.

4. Eagles Love the Storm.
When clouds gather, the eagle gets excited, the eagle uses the storms wind to lift itself higher. Once it finds the wind of the storm, the eagle uses the raging storm to lift itself above the clouds. This gives the eagle an opportunity to glide and rest its wings. In the meantime, all the other birds hide in the branches and leaves of the tree.

MEANING; Face your challenges head on knowing that these will make you emerge stronger and better than you were. We can use the storms of life to rise to greater heights. Achievers are not afraid to rise to greater heights. Achievers are not afraid of challenges, rather they relish them and use them profitably.

5. Eagles Prepare for Training;
They remove the feathers and soft grass in the nest so that the young ones get uncomfortable in preparation for flying and eventually flies/ when it becomes unbearable to stay in the nest./

MEANING; Leave your Comfort Zone, there is No Growth there.

6. When the Eagle Grows Old,
His feathers becomes weak and cannot take him as fast and as high as it should. This makes him weak and could make him die. So he retires to a place far away in the mountains. While there, he plucks out the weak feathers on his body and breaks its beaks and claws against the rocks until he is completely bare; a very bloody and painful process. Then he stays in this hiding place until he has grown new feathers, new beaks and claws and then he comes out flying higher than before.

MEANING; We occasionally need to shed off old habit no matter how difficult, things that burden us or add no value to our lives should be let go of.

Never give up. Be an Eagle.

At the top of the ladder, the stakes are high and the demands intense. Too many CEOs falter in the job; about a quarter of the Fortune 500 chiefs who leave their firms each year are forced out. Ego is the enemy of good leadership :

The inflated ego that comes with success – the bigger salary, the nicer office, the easy laughs – often makes us feel as if we’ve found the eternal answer to being a leader. But the reality is, we haven’t. An inflated ego makes us susceptible to manipulation; it narrows our field of vision; and it corrupts our behavior, often causing us to act against our values. Breaking free of an overly-protective or inflated ego and avoiding the leadership bubble is an important and challenging job that requires selflessness, reflection, and courage

a) In nuclear families today, with little or no parental support and with working couples, bringing up children is tough. Before you take the decision to go ahead, make sure that you are prepared to put in that extra effort. Remember, the children did not ask to be born, you got them into this world. Go all in as far as parenting is concerned, no half- measures here !

b) There is nothing that children want more than your time & love. That cannot be outsourced- you have to make sure that both of you, or at least one of you,is always available with them spending quality moments. Even if you are the PM, as Jacinda Ardern said yesterday at the Harvard Commencement,you can still take time off for your kids;

c) Don’t forget that children are extremely perceptive.They soak up the atmosphere and the habits of their parents imperceptibly but surely. Make sure, therefore, that you set the right example in terms of values, ethics & integrity. Walk the talk ! ;

d) Irrespective of howsoever much you may have, make them appreciate the value of money and human dignity & labour. If they don’t value human effort and what it takes to put food on the table, they won’t ever value anything else in life.

Most importantly, teach them respect for women and how they enrich our life. As they grow older, talk to them about the importance of consent and respecting a woman’s choices. That will make them into fine, rounded individuals who will be an asset to society ;

e) Teach them to be discerning and appreciate all points of view- encourage debate & discussion. Guide them gently but let them arrive at their own decisions. They should have the confidence that whatever the issue, their parents will always be there for them without being in any way judgemental ;

f) Handle differences between you & your spouse separately, never in front of your children. They should always see their parents as a united, indivisible whole. Don’t try and score brownie points in front of your kids vis-a-vis your spouse or partner;

g) Be happy with your children’s choices- whether it be their choice of career, life partner or anything else. Remember, they are your children, not your clones.

Give them love, respect & confidence and it’s the best thing you would ever have done.

P.S: taken from a very relevant post on LinkedIn of parents and children of current generation
