Next, listen closely to the reference track's vocal track and use it as a guide for how loud your vocals should be relative to the other elements in your mix. This is arguably the most important step, and it's one that many amateur mix engineers don't pay enough attention to.

If your tracks are well-balanced, you won't need EQ, compression, and other processing to attain a cohesive sound; it will already be there (although the mix will likely sound unfinished).

So, before you start piling on your favorite plug-ins, get your levels right. This will save you lots of time, and it will lead to an overall better mix in the long run.

HOW MIXING IN MONO CAN IMPROVE YOUR STEREO MIXES

Many newer mix engineers have the mistaken impression that mono mixing is a relic from decades past. After all, most modern mixes are in stereo, or even in multi-channel surround or Dolby Atmos.

Truth be told, most pro mix engineers spend a third of their time — or more — listening to their mixes in mono, even if their final project will be delivered in a different format.

When you mix in mono, balancing the levels of your channels is vital — you won't be able to hide behind your pan k***s. You'll also expose equalization issues, phase cancellation, and other problems that were masked within the stereo field.

What's more, you'll have a rock-solid center channel!

At the end of the day, if your mix sounds great in mono, it will sound great in stereo. Unfortunately, the reverse isn't always true.

So, if you want your music to sound good coming out of a smartphone or Bluetooth speaker, we recommend that you check your mix in mono vigilantly and frequently.

HOW TO POSITION YOUR STUDIO MONITORS PROPERLY

Proper speaker position is vital for accurate monitoring. Improper positioning results in skewed imaging, which means that all of your careful panning will be for naught.

Start by arranging your speakers in the shape of an equilateral triangle. Your studio monitors will form two corners of the triangle, with your head forming the third.

Next, angle the monitors so their drivers are pointed at you head. You'll want a direct line of sight between the speakers and your ears.

Lastly, ensure that the tweeters on your studio monitors are at ear level. Since high frequencies are highly directional, this will ensure that you're hearing everything accurately and consistently.

HOW DIGITAL STUDIOS CAN "ANALOG-IZE" THEIR MIXES

If you toil around pro audio forums, you'll find many analog purists who insist that unless you ditch your plug-ins in favor of their analog counterparts, your mixes will suffer. Plug-ins, they'll argue, simply don't measure up.

While we feel that this extreme position is rubbish, there is something to be said for the "magic" that analog gear can bring to your mixes.

One place that can greatly benefit from analog outboard is your mix bus. Even if you're a plug-in devotee, passing your entire mix through a single piece of high-end gear is a great way to achieve a "big studio" sound.

An SSL-style bus compressor is a great option for digital studios that would like to integrate some analog mojo into their mixes — pro mix engineers have relied on this tried-and-true method to achieve that elusive "glued-together" sound for decades.

"Analog-izing" your mix bus is a great way to enjoy the countless benefits of plug-ins, while giving your projects the pro-level sheen we all strive for.

HOW SECONDARY REFERENCE SPEAKERS HELP YOUR MIXES TRANSLATE

Even if you own a high-end set of studio monitors, you shouldn't rely solely on them during mixing. Rather, you should audition your mixes on different speakers to hear how they sound on other playback systems.

Many professional mix engineers keep a second set of studio monitors on hand specifically for this purpose. In addition to full-range reference monitors, many engineers use multimedia speakers, home stereo speakers, earbuds, or frequency-limited speakers like Avantone MixCubes for auditioning mixes.

Headphones are another excellent reference source, as is your car stereo. Although it's frustrating to admit, if your mix sounds bad in your car, odds are it will sound bad on a wide variety of playback systems.

At the end of the day, if you mix sounds great on your main studio monitors, on earbuds, and in your car, it will likely sound great everywhere.

The volume of a channel has a huge effect on its overall sound, especially when adjusted in the context of the whole mix. For example, you can make a channel sound brighter just by increasing the volume. You can also make it sound darker by turning it down.

When you adjust the balance of any channel, the others can sound brighter or darker relative to it, so it’s quite literally a balancing act, finding that perfect level for each channel.

Get the balance wrong and you’ll struggle to get close to the pro-sounding richness and clarity of chart-topping songs. But, get the balance right and you’ll have laid the foundation needed to create a great sounding mix.
