Our Story

“The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps." - Proverbs 16:9

In 1978 International Falls resident John Blankman met Minnesota Christian Broadcasters (MCBI) Board Member Jim Brunes while attending a Gideon's meeting in Virginia, MN. MCBI had just started KTIG Christian radio in Pequot Lakes, MN and they began to talk about Christian radio. Jim asked if there was any interest in Christian Radio for the International Falls area and if so would John help organize a meeting of area residents? There was interest! That first meeting was held in International Falls later that year - but it was decided that the time was not right to press forward.

In 1980 a second meeting was held. That two year delay turned out to be a blessing because the license available in 1978 was for a 3 thousand-watt station with small listening area. Now, a 100 thousand watt permit was available. Plans were made to move ahead.

Two years later on January 4th 1983, KBHW 99.5 FM signed on the air. Since that time our listening area has expanded to include station KADU at 90.1 in Hibbing and 12 FM 'translator' stations to serve communities just outside the listening area.
