Last time on HPH we began the story of Toussaint Louverture who joined up with a slave rebellion in his home in the French colony of Saint Domingue. He rose to prominence and proved himself to be not only a brilliant military mind, but also an adept politician who would do anything to maintain the freedom on his fellow citizens. In this episode, we're taking a look at how he tried to best help his people while repeatedly being dicked over by the French, who were afraid of losing their colony. And of course we take a lot of strange detours on our drunken journey. It's a wild ride so why don't you go ahead a grab a drink, settle in, and enjoy this episode of Hundred Proof History titled Toussaint Louverture Part II: With Friends Like These!

In 1791 the slaves of Saint Domingue, which is modern day Haiti, rose up in rebellion to overthrow their oppressors. From this chaos came a man who would prove to be an adept leader and cunning politician. He would eventually find a way to eliminate slavery in Haiti and his work would lead to the first sovereign nation in the Caribbean. In this episode we're taking a look at his early life and the first few years of the rebellion. It's a wild and rarely told story, so we are excited to be back to tell it to you. So why don't you grab a drink, settle in, and enjoy this episode of Hundred Proof History titled Toussaint Louverture Part I...Flip Flopping for Freedom!

We'll be back in 2024 with new episodes, but for now if you need me I'll be getting unnecessarily angry while I futilely argue with the dumbest people alive.

As mentioned in our latest episode, the P61 Black Widow was a wild ass looking fighter plane that arrived on the scene toward the end of the war.

Imagine being a Japanese camp guard or an American who had been imprisoned for 3 years and seeing this plane, which typically only flew at night, performing acrobatics over your head. You'd be confused and awestruck just like they were. And this little distraction was one of the key elements that allowed the Rangers and Filipinos to rescue the American POWs held at Cabanatuan.

For more on that raid, be sure to check out the latest episode of Hundred Proof History, available now on all podcast platforms.

A map of the Bataan peninsula displaying the route of the Death March and a few events that occurred along the way. The march led to the train station at San Fernando where the prisoners were a hundred men were crowded into tiny boxcars at the same time. (image 2) Once inside the boxcars the temperatures soared to over 140 degrees and men were crushed, suffocated, and died in puddles of human excrement. So, that was fun.

If it doesn't sound fun to you, well maybe you should listen to the latest episode of Hundred Proof History and see if we can lighten the mood a little.

In 1942, the American forces in the Philippines were in a very bad way and were forced to surrender to the Japanese that had trapped them on a small peninsula on the island of Luzon. What followed was a brutal hellmarch, a suffocating train ride, and internment at a camp with conditions so bad that men wished for death. In this episode we're telling you the story of the surrender and the torture that followed, but this little slice of bleakness is only being served so that we can come back next week and tell you all about the daring spec-ops raid that was launched to save these men and bring them home. But for now, why don't you go ahead and grab a drink, settle in, and enjoy this episode of Hundred Proof History titled The Bataan Death March: Aptly Named!

Every year on HPH we use Halloween as an opportunity to disguise ourselves as a True Crime podcast and tell you the terrible, awful, pointless tale of a serial killer. I bet you thought that we were skipping it this year just because it so happens to be Mid-November. Wrong! This year marks our 5th installment in our serial killer...series...and this time we're focusing on an English doctor who murdered upwards of 250 of his own patients and then got caught because he was a big, stupid boomer. We're going to have a lot of fun, despite the grim reality behind this week's episode, so why don't you go ahead and grab a drink, settle in, and enjoy this episode of Hundred Proof History titled Harold Shipman: Paging Dr. Death!

At the beginning of the 20th Century, the country of Russia was in a state of absolute turmoil. The Tsar had been overthrown and the country was divided between the co**ie Soviet Red Army and the aristocratic White Army. In the middle of this was a little known history figure named Roman von Ungern Sternberg, who would not only fight the Bolsheviks but would then invade Mongolia and attempt to lead a Mongol force back into Russia to liberate it from the Soviets. Oh, and he was a total piece of s**t that believed in ultraviolence, particularly towards the Jewish people. It's a wild story and in this episode of HPH we're taking you through his youth, early military career, and his establishment as a feudal tyrant in Siberia. So, why don't you just go ahead and grab a drink, settle in, and enjoy this episode of Hundred Proof History titled The Bloody Baron Part I: The Di****ad of Dauria!

We're back from our summer break with a wild ass story that you might know absolutely nothing about. What if we told you that there once was a former, beloved, US President who decided to risk his life traveling through the rainforest of Brazil to explore an uncharted river? And by "risk his life" we don't mean like "Oh I ate that Taco Bell after it had been sitting out for two days." No! We mean real, life threatening danger that takes him to the point of contemplating su***de. It's crazy to think it could happen but it absolutely did and we're going to tell you all about it. In this episode we focus on the p**s poor planning of the expedition and the hellmarch that it had to go through just to get to the river itself. We're so excited to be back and we just want you to go ahead and grab a drink, settle in, and enjoy this episode of Hundred Proof History titled Theodore Roosevelt and the River of Doubt Part I: A Bunch of Bad Ideas!

The presidency of Ulysses S Grant was rife with its own controversies, but most of them were because he put his trust in the wrong people. But one of the great things Grant did as president was go after the Ku Klux Klan and work to protect the voting rights of the recently freed black citizens of the United States.

He'd probably have his mind blown to know that in the year 2023, a former US President would be charged with committing one of the laws his administration created to protect the civil rights of Americans.

For us living in 2023, it was just another Tuesday.

We spent some time talking about US Grant and how he was pretty fu***ng awesome so maybe go listen to those episodes of Hundred Proof History while you wait for us to return from our summer break!

We talked about the assassination of James Garfield way back in episodes 85 and 86 of the show and it's a fantastic bit of American history that is often overlooked in your school learnin' So maybe if you haven't already done so, you should go give it a hear-listen. In the first two episodes of this series we've run through the first 70 or so of Ben Franklin's Life and brought you to the brink of the American Revolution. Surely this old F is about done with his adventures and contributions to the people of America, right? WRONG. In this episode Ben will once more travel to Europe and become an American ambassador, will treat his children like human garbage, and will help form the most important documents in United States history before dying of death. It's a fun ride, but it has to end sometime, so why don't you go ahead and grab a drink, settle in, and enjoy this series finale titled Benjamin Franklin Part III: Wait, he wasn't a president?

We are going on our summer break, but if you are thirsting for more sweet, sweet HPH action, maybe consider joining the Patreon! For only $3 you get access to 39 classic episodes, 65+ bonus mini-episodes, and 2 day early access to new releases. It's more than enough to get you through the dog days of summer without us!

*SOUND ON*

Behold the Armonica!

In 1761 Benjamin Franklin invented this instrument made from crystal bowls that were spun on a spindle operated by a foot pedal. The player would wet their fingers and touch the bowls creating different notes. The instrument was wildly popular. Marie Antoinette took lessons and Mozart and Beethoven would compose music for it. For awhile it was even fashionable to play one at wedding ceremonies.

Unfortunately the glass was made with lead which meant that it slowly poisoned people who played it. Users suffered from depression, dizziness, nervousness, hallucinations, and even a few deaths were attributed to the instrument. Back then were blissfully unaware of the dangers of lead and they just thought it was because the instrument was too complex for the average idiot to play.

In our opinion it sounds like creepy clown music so it's okay that it fell out of fashion.

Last week we began the story of one Benjamin Franklin who had dropped out of school at the age of 10, ran away from an apprenticeship, and became a wealthy and successful printer. He retired at the ripe old age of 42, but that wasn't even close to the end of his story. This week we're taking a look at Ben's life in retirement in which he would develop several scientific theories, ditch his family for a life in London, and ultimately fail to maintain harmony between England and the American Colonies. It's a super fun episode of HPH filled with all sorts of chicanery and we just know you're going to love it. So, grab a drink, settle in, and enjoy this episode of Hundred Proof History titled Benjamin Franklin Part II: Super Scientist, P**s Poor Politician!

In the early 18th Century a man was born who would shape the way Americans lived and how they thought of themselves. He would be a printer, a scientist, a politician, and a philanderer and would become one of America's favorite founding fathers. This week we're taking a look at the first half of his life when he developed not only his wealth, but some strong opinions on how people should live. In the early 1930's the American press and the public were obsessed with a daring duo of sexy outlaws that were known for robbing banks and getting away clean. In reality, this couple were a part of a violent gang that killed several people and, on the whole, was really, really bad at actually committing crimes. In this episode of HPH we're taking a look at the early lives of these two humans and the chaos that led to them sharing a life of crime together. It is time to grab a drink, settle in, and enjoy this episode of Hundred Proof History titled Bonnie and Clyde Part I: A Rough Start!

31/03/2023

In 2007 rumors began to spread that Pat Tillman was intentionally killed by his fellow soldiers for speaking out against the war in Iraq. The only evidence to support this claim is the three rounds that hit him in the face were grouped tightly and army officials that later testified on his death stated they could not recall many of the details.

First of all, Pat never spoke publicly about his distaste for the war. In fact, once he enlisted, he refused to give any interviews at all. His thoughts on the Iraq war were confined to his journals which wouldn't become public until after his death.

Second, several members of his platoon, including his brother, would hold frequent discussions about how they thought the war in Iraq was unjust. Why would Pat be the only target?

Third, on the day Pat was shot and killed, a member of the allied Afghan Military Forces was killed right next to him, and Lieutenant Michael Uthlaut, who had never expressed an unfavorable opinion on the war was struck by a friendly 40mm gr***de far from where Pat was standing. Why would they be targets?

The tight grouping of shots from the M249 light machine gun? It might seem strange that three of those rounds could hit someone in the head considering the rate of fire and recoil of the weapon. But the shots were fired from 50-60 yards away. To qualify with the M249, a soldier has to group 5 shots within an inch of each other at 25 yards. So if you increase that distance to 60 yards, hitting the target the size of a head three times from a sitting position with your weapon braced on a window frame is not far fetched in the least.

In the end, Pat Tillman was killed by friendly fire and the army tried to cover it up because things weren't going great in either theater of war at the time and his death could be twisted by the Bush administration to score political points. The soldier that killed him definitely fu**ed up, but there is absolutely no evidence that he intentionally shot Pat Tillman on April 22, 2004.
