Highway 676 Protest - Record Settlement - $9.75 Million - Philadelphia - 2023 for The George Floyd Demonstrations in 2020
A record setting 9.25 million dollars was awarded to 2020 George Floyd protesters / journalists after they were trapped and assaulted on a highway embankment by Philadelphia SWAT officers. Philadelphia Police Officers used tear gas, pepper spray, rubber bullets and a long range acoustic device. Video evidence proved that the demonstrators were peaceful and the force was not justified. Our very own Accredited Journalist DJ Weltch was injured while covering the demonstrations. Weltch sits with the VPodCast Host / Film Maker Vinu Joseph to describe his experiences on that day, his subsequent case (Weltch Vs. The City of Philadelphia) and the record setting settlement.
The lump sum was split between 4 combined lawsuits for the events that transpired on 52nd Street the day prior and the events on Highway 676.
An additional 500K was awarded to a Community Fund to provide Mental Health Counseling in West Philadelphia
