Jan 26th – Birthday of Doc Hopkins (Jan 26, 1900- Jan 3, 1988), fine Kentuckian folk balladeer who had a wide repertoire of traditional folk and hillbilly ballads. He became popular on many of the era’s country music radio shows, telling the stories as well as singing the songs. An accomplished musician – three-finger-and-thumb guitar picker as well as on banjo and mandolin he re-emerged from obscurity during the folk revival of the mid 1960s and continued, playing at his last folk festival in 1982. One of those ‘Lost & forgotten’ great talents well deserving of another listen.

January 23. Birthday of legendary Canadian “Singing Soldier” Hank LaRiviere (a.k.a. Hank Rivers) , January 23, 1917-May 7, 1996. Outstanding singer/yodeller and composer and radio/TV performer, he first recorded in 1933 before signing to RCA Victor in Montreal in 1939 - joining the label’s other two legends of Canadian Country, Wilf Carter and Hank Snow. LaRiviere enjoyed a long and productive recording and performing career through to the 1970s. Check out the www.hankrivers.com website for more bio and discography info. BACM have compiled a 28 track album featuring several of his hits and own compositions including the widely recorded Maple Sugar Sweetheart. Also features some familiar Jimmie Rodgers and Wilf Carter numbers. Of special interest is “Longing for Old Alberta” which name-checks his friend Gene Autry as well as messrs Rodgers and Carter. This is from his 1967 “Hank’s Centennial Travels” album which has songs about each of Canada's provinces.

23 January - remembering oold timey country singer Frank Welling (Feb 16 1898 - 23 Jan 1957) who teamed up with John McGhee in the late 1920s, with Welling on lead vocals, steel and guitar and McGhee on harmonica and guitar and bass harmony vocals. BACM's CD focuses on their 1930-31 recordings, their sweet harmony vocals serving up sentimental songs, some http://country-music-archive.com/country-cds/frank-welling-john-mcghee-i-wants-my-lulu/with echoes of Irish/Scottish folk melodies. Their sound somewhat similar to, but less bluesey than, their contemporaries 'Darby & Tarlton' (Tom Darby and Jimmie Tarlton).

We were glad to see there a review of our popular CD 707, Old Time Country Radio: Radio Shows from the 1930s & 40s. The reviewer spins a nice story, childhood memories of visits to a neighbour who'd be playing old time country shows on the radio, memories brought back by this CD - five radio shows from the 1930s plus one, featuring Roy Acuff from 1949. All vintage hillbilly and Western Swing. As the reviewer says: "If you enjoy the genre, you’ll find that this release is fun!"

17th January - birthday of Grady Martin (Thomas Grady Martin , Jan 17, 1929 – Dec 3, 2001), inventive and prolific guitar picker. Through his 50 year recording career, his licks appear on some of the great recordings of the era – backing rock legends Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison as well as of countless country stars, including big hits from the likes of Patsy Cline, Marty Robbins, Willie Nelson and Lefty Frizzell. He also played fiddle, including on one of Hank Williams’ last sessions. From the late ‘50s he was a member of the legendary Nashville A-Team of session musicians alongside fellow guitar-maestro Hank Garland, Bob Moore (bass) and Tommy Jackson (fiddle) on countless historic recordings. His guitar talents are well showcased on BACM’s CD 222, featuring Grady with his own country-jazz band, Grady Martin and the Slew Foot Five, recorded in the early and mid 1950s.

17 January – remembering anniversary of Kentuckian bluegrass singer, guitarist and songwriter Hylo Brown (Frank Brown Jnr., (20 Apr 1922 – 17 Jan 2003). His performing career stretched from the late 1930s through to 1980s, hi-lights including his association with the legendary Bradley Kincaid (he played rhythm guitar on Kincaid’s final Capitol sessions in 1950) and with Bill Monroe as one of the Blue Grass Boys, his membership appearances on the popular Flatt & Scruggs shows from 1957 and his bringing bluegrass to new audiences at the 1959 Newport Folk Festival. Although much influenced by Monroe’s ‘Classic bluegrass’ style, Brown was an innovator, creating his unique style on both bluegrass and country.

17 January - birthday anniversary of "The Lonely Cowboy", Tex Fletcher (Geremino Bisceglia, Jan 17, 1910 - Mar14, 1987), American singing cowboy yodeler. Brought up in South Dakota , he grew up listening to cowboy songs around the campfire and learned early to work with horse and cattle, Moved to New York in the early 30s and soon hit the big time on radio as a singing cowboy. This led to movie roles and a Decca record contract (he eventually recorded with numerous labels including his own Dakota label). An all round talent, he was also a prolific songwriter and reputedly had a repertoire of over 4,000 songs all of which he could recall from memory. https://country-music-archive.com/country-cds/tex-fletcher-the-lonely-cowboy/

16th January - birthday of Bard Of The Yukon Robert W. Service (Jan 16, 1874 - Sep 11, 1958), surely the most recorded poet in the history of country music. A fascinating life - from Scottish bank clerk to penniless hobo (in Canada) and then becoming the worlds first millionaire poet. In his 70s, he played himself as a young man in his 30s in a Marlene Dietrich/Randolph Scott Hollywood western (The Spoilers 1942). Country artistes who have recorded Service recitations or songs include Johnny Cash, Jim Reeves, Stuart Hamblen, Wilf Carter, Johnny Horton and Country Joe McDonald. But for me the best is Hank Snows 1968 Tales Of The Yukon, one of my favorite albums of all time, which has Hank in fine recitation-voice on a clutch of Service poems ; superb arrangements, the sessions featuring Chet Atkins and Lenny Breau on guitars and Chubby-Wise on fiddle. Service himself played the ukelele and published one book of songs, Twenty Bath Tub Ballads, one of which - When The Ice Worms Nest Again, was recorded by Wilf Carter. (Tales Of The Yukon is NOT a BACM release; but is available from Amazon; the album is also on the great Bear Family box set, The Singing Ranger Vol.3)
