Disassociative Productions Film/Art collective

Disassociative Production is an art collective readying a batch of three feature films, over forty short films, video art installations, and other art in several medias this summer. The impetus for our movement lies in the recycling, destruction, and re-organization of the null signs of the culture; our movement is necessary in order to reassess the spectacle/spectator relationship of post-post-mo

dern society; to wield cinema and art as expressive media that not only stimulates consciousness but forces the spectator into self-reflexive thought; thought that reveals his or her relation to the hyper-panoptic spectacle that has blanketed reality. Disassociate. 2012

Quite distinct from the event itself, the non-event flirts with fourth-order simulacra, as a sign hiding its complete negation. Beginning with the legendary artist Aldo Tambellini’s newly rediscovered Black Video III (with a live soundtrack performed by the program’s curator, M. Woods) Agitate 21C’s The Non-Event opens up Peripheries Film Festival with force; an uncompromising program of space-altering film/video - transgressing and addressing the production of hyperreality. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 6, 2024

Multidisciplinary Artist M. Woods tours their 4th Feature Film, COMMODITY TRADING: DIES IRAE, alongside a retrospective of the work of Aldo Tambellini

(CHICAGO, IL 6/6/204) Artist and self-proclaimed media-drug manufacturer, M. Woods, has just announced new tour dates for their fourth, independently-produced feature film, COMMODITY TRADING: DIES IRAE. The tour will also feature Chicago-based filmmaker Sonnie Wooden’s short film GUILLOTINE at select stops.

Upcoming screenings are booked for Mills Folly Microcinema (June 26), Maysles Documentary Center Cinema (June 27), and Comfort Film (July 10). For tickets visit: Thedigitalsickness.com

In a review for Chicago-based Cine-File, art critic and curator, Nicky Ni, wrote: “COMMODITY TRADING is a strange autofictional thriller that loosely interweaves the hypnotic journeys of two protagonists, M. Woods and Joshua, attempting to enter what is called ‘The Numb Spiral’ through different entry points as they are haunted by Trump’s America. The Numb Spiral, which in the film is neither heaven nor hell but what akin to a virtual insatiable void that devours authentic experience and meaning—a nauseous simulacrum, if you will, is also representative of M. Woods’s painful research into our contemporary sub-human existence twisted and twirled by capitalism, corporate superpowers, socio-political atrocities, overflown information, internet intimacy, and surveillance.”

In addition to screenings of COMMODITY TRADING, Woods curated BLACK INFINITUDE, a retrospective screening of their mentor Aldo Tambellini’s work, featuring new VR pieces, paintings, and an installation inspired by Tambellini’s groundbreaking work. Named “One of the titans of 20th century art” by curator Stuart Comer, this is the first posthumous touring retrospective of Tambellini’s essential body of experimental film and video art.

This dazzling multimedia ensemble is an introduction to the uninitiated, featuring rare 16mm prints and a live performance to BLACK VIDEO 3. Aldo’s wife, Anna Salamone, worked with Woods to successfully stage the resulting retrospective screening and art installation that premiered in 2024 at Ann Arbor Film Festival. In May Woods brought BLACK INFINITUDE to Anthology Film Archives for another successful screening and performance thanks to the acclaimed Prismatic Ground, curated by Inney Prakash.

Chicago’s own Sonnie Wooden will be joining Woods at select tour dates, including the upcoming screening at Maysles Documentary Center Cinema. On his short film, Wooden writes, “GUILLOTINE is an intricate mosaic of American culture… it explores fear, paranoia, anticipatory grief, and expectations of Black lives. The film evokes the disjointedness of scrolling on social media—and that consistent inundation of chaotic, uncontrollable violence and beauty.”

Comfort Film Presents:

Commodity Trading: Dies Irae (2022)

A bad trip that replicates the dissolution of the self/government/family/body within the solvent of a white supremacist hyperreal suspension. M. Woods attempts to enter the Numb Spiral through the Great Incision of Oxoniae, lulled into the digital sickness to be with his doppelgänger. After entering a portal in a we**am site, he becomes Abraxas, recklessly seeking completion through The Numb Spiral. Meanwhile, Joshua enters the Numb Spiral through 9DVR, a game platform installed at Culver City’s Westfield Shopping Center. The White Father haunts Joshua until Joshua decides to burn down the White Father’s house in righteous anger.

COMMODITY TRADING: DIES IRAE by Chicago-based multi-disciplinary artist, M. Woods, is a surrealist nightmare contorting through a hyperreal labyrinth of protests, ruins, and disturbing visions of end-state Capitalism. Using swirling 16mm film, M. takes the spectator on a trip to the Desert of the Real, where the United States plunges into a hallucinatory zone of pure nothingness. While this is M’s first solo screening in Chicago, their body of work, collectively entitled The Numb Spiral, has screened extensively for the past decade including at IFFR, the Ann Arbor Film Festival, the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival, and the Flaherty Seminar.

Media: Digital Projection
Runtime: 86 mins

There will be a short Q&A after the screening.

The DNC needs a replacement immediately. And many have asked me how this could happen. I don’t know. I don’t care. Sure. It is beyond unlikely. It probably won’t happen. I am powerless to create a solution but I’m not going to be quiet about gross injustice either.

I’ve been repeating the following from Malcolm X: Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice; Moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue. This was his argument at the Oxford Union, a position that would become revelatory of the apathy of the next half century. Because in times of gross injustice, extreme methods are not only virtuous, but necessary to dissimulation and disassociation. In apathy and comfortable fear, the United States’ upper middle class have allowed their comfort to blossom into abhorrent inequality and apathy towards racist Capitalist Necropolitics.

It is not the fault of those opposed to genocide that Biden is an awful human and undeserving of the vote and that you might not care or know about the Sabra and Shatila Massacres during the 1982 Lebanon War perpetuated by Ariel Sharon who would become prime minister of Israel, and who, with Benjamin Netanyahu, and the help of Ehud Olmert - who rained down white phosphorous, dismantle the agreements made by Rabin before he was assassinated by a hateful Netanyahu supporter.

Israeli PM Rabin called for two states and no more settlements. He won a Nobel Prize with Arafat and he was murdered for it; Rabin was caricatured as a N**i, and his effigy burned in full view of Netanyahu. Rabin’s own widow blamed Netanyahu for the murder. Netanyahu is attempting to escape conviction for unrelated corruption crimes the same way as Trump, and he is using a genocide to keep power and you stay silent? This has nothing to do with anti-semitism. This has everything to do with racism against the Palestinian people and an unwillingness to view the world and conflict in context.

For the privileged, voting does not take much effort. The illusory model of voting as the sole interaction and ultimate act of any citizen is a dereliction of the terms of one’s social contract. Even the reliance on “get the vote out” efforts is deeply reductive. The exchange of ideas no longer possible, and no longer concerned for hearts and minds, the next step for all systems of power is fear. A social contract must be the foundation of any representative democracy of any republic (and humanity).

If we are to live together we cannot vote for the wanton slaughter of our fellow humanity, even in the face of a threat like Donald Trump. Voting for continued genocide does not wash easily. Having been effectively bullied into voting for the Dems my whole life, I am casting my vote for Bernie Sanders, who, but for the fraudulent actions of the DNC, was the actual democratic presidential nominee in 2016 and 2020. (Ask Donna Brazile and CC all other nominees in 2020 in the Biden White House.) If you care about human rights and aren’t conned by this wicked government I hope you’ll consider writing in Bernie Sanders or whoever else. I was considering Bowser or Waluigi as they are the better evils. This current government is more murderous than the last. Remember that.

GUILLOTINE by Sonnie Wooden | March 15 at 7PM

With COMMODITY TRADING by M. Woods

Review by Cenìnye Harris | Edited by M. Woods

“…The hyperrealism that Sonnie Wooden depicts is archival, experiential, and at times, a mockery of the real, a flattening or oversimplifying that some may find off-putting if it were not for Sonnie’s ability to use the cinematic artifice as a means of satire and horror. Wooden’s own authorship is in the GUILLOTINE: the splicer and that which doles at justice.

The GUILLOTINE, in that sense, is a form of retribution, and sometimes, of a need for revenge against an institution. Wooden’s GUILLOTINE splices together these awful and sardonic truths of a human hive mind steeped in narcissism and a lack of self-consciousness, attempting to surpass irony while depicting the midst of racist nihilism. And in this critique of distinctly USA-cultivated horror and kitsch, Wooden is not making any simple statements, or general attacks. Instead, his erudite juxtaposition of these elements invites a post-screening conversation. There is no answer. The figure of Kanye appears and explains that he is speechless and unable to find resolve. GUILLOTINE acknowledges this lack and does not shy away from keeping its audience within the ambiguities of the emptiness in our reflections and the media we use to reflect.”
