Every year, as Christmas approaches, there is an incident that almost always comes to mind in America. On December 25, 1996, the murder of six-year-old JonBenet Ramsey occurred between midnight and the next morning. Today marks 26 years since the Christmas tragedy.
At the time, the incident attracted attention not only in the United States but around the world. JonBenet was a young celebrity who won multiple beauty pageants and was known as a wealthy local celebrity in Boulder, Colorado, where her parents were involved. To date, police have obtained more than 21,000 pieces of information and interviewed more than 1,000 people in 19 states in the JonBenet murder case, which has become a high profile case in the United States. However, to date, the perpetrator has not been caught.
World's largest cold case
"The JonBenet murder is the world's largest cold case."This is what Mr. Roscoe Clark, a private detective living in Flint, Michigan, said. Clark has personally investigated the JonBenet murder case for eight years.
"Why did you start the investigation?" It dates back ten years to a trip to Michigan to give a lecture on a book published by JonBenet's father, John Ramsey. Mr. Clark, who went to hear the lecture, took a video of it, and he began exchanging emails with Mr. Ramsey. At the time, Ramsey spoke at a crime convention and questioned the Boulder police investigation, claiming it was being misinformed. Suspicion was placed first on the Ramsey family, and all the media published articles that treated John, his wife Patty, and even JonBenet's brother Burke as criminals.
Who Killed JonBenet? Interested in the incident, Mr. Clark began his own investigation.
“I tried to profile the perpetrators based on facts, including forensics, court records, interviews with neighbors, and background checks on suspects. There is not one culprit, we believe there are seven people involved in the murder."
Mr. Clark shows confidence in the multiple intruder theory.
First, here's an overview of what happened. Around 10 pm on December 25th, after the Ramsey family got home from a Christmas party at their friend Mr. White's house, John carried JonBenet, who was sleeping in the car, to bed and the family went to bed. The next day, the 26th, the family was planning to go to a vacation home in Michigan for the Christmas holidays. Patsy wakes up early to make breakfast and notices a note on the spiral staircase leading to the kitchen. It was a three-page threatening letter addressed to John demanding a ransom of $118,000 to hand over JonBenet.
Patsy called 911 when she learned that JonBenet had been kidnapped, even though the threatening letter said, "Don't call the police." The threatening letter also stated that he would be contacted between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m., so the police and the FBI set up listening devices, but the kidnapper never heard from him.
A four-story mansion is also searched, and JonBenet's body is found in the basement after 1:00 pm. JonBenet was wrapped in a blanket, her mouth was taped, and a nylon cord was tied around her neck. The coroner's office ruled JonBenet's cause of death to be strangulation and skull injuries from a beating, but the weapon used for the beating has not yet been identified.
The Ramsays were the first to be suspected, and with good reason. For example, a ransom demand of $118,000. This amount was equated with John's Christmas bonus that year. This brought suspicion to Ramsey family members and employees at John's company who knew the amount of the bonus.
In addition, the handwriting of the threatening letter is very similar to Patsy's handwriting, and the paper on which the threatening letter was written and the pen used to write it were Patsy's possession. Patty was also suspected because the nylon cord that had been used was tied to the paintbrush Patsy was using.
An autopsy found an undigested pineapple in JonBenet's stomach. A bowl of pineapple was found on the kitchen table the morning of the incident, suggesting JonBenet ate pineapples overnight. Since the bowl had her brother Burke's fingerprints on it, the theory that Burke, who was angry at JonBenet eating pineapples, killed JonBenet by hitting her with a flashlight also surfaced.
The Mystery of the $118,000 Ransom
However, after repeated investigations, Mr. Clark threw a "no" to these rumors of her relatives.
First, they discover that the requested ransom of $118,000 is not the same amount as John's Christmas bonus. The amount, to be exact, was $118,117.50. The numbers were close, but not exactly the same.
In addition, Mr. Clark discovered an amount of $118,000 from another source.
" An elderly man who lived in the basement of Joe Barnhill's house across the street from the Ramseys had a government loan of exactly $118,000 a few years prior to the incident. Also, Joe's son, the home improvement loan he took out was the same $118,000, and we have public records to prove it."
"It's exactly $118,000, not a fraction like John's bonus amount." Clark believes this is no coincidence.
Clark also investigated the background of the man who lived in the basement. The man was Glenn Mayer from Indiana, who was 64 years old at the time of the incident. Because he spends a lot of money, his ex-wives dislike him, and he has been divorced four times. Penniless after being kicked out of the house by his fourth wife, Mayer had the aforementioned $118,000 loan from the government. What's more, Mayer was in arrears on the loan.
A man who lives in a house with articles on the JonBenet case plastered all over the wall.
Mr. Clark also learns from his neighbors that Mayer was interested in JonBenet.
"Neighbors said Mayer would often peek out of the bush while JonBenet was practicing her performance on the beauty pageant stage. There was a time when the Barnhill family took care of her, but Barnhill said that he sometimes lost sight of JonBenet for about an hour in the house. A kindergarten teacher reported to Patsy that the cheerful JonBenet began spending time alone in a corner. We speculate that he was sexually abused because Mayer's fourth wife, Haye, told him that he had a history of abusing women."
According to Haye, Mayer's interest in JonBenet was insane and she was convinced that Mayer was the culprit.
“After the murder, Mayer returned to Indiana and lived in a small apartment, but no one was allowed into the room because the walls were floor to ceiling with dozens of Jonbenet articles. It was decorated with articles about the incident and looked like a temple dedicated to Jonbenet. However, one day, the article fell on the stove and the fire alarm went off, prompting firefighters to rush to the apartment. They couldn't go inside because Mayer had barricaded the entrance with furniture because he didn't want people to see inside."
The threatening letter was also allegedly written on a notepad belonging to Patsy, which Clark speculates may have been taken by Mayer from the Ramsey family.
"The notepad on which the threatening letter was written was said to be Patsy's, but it was the kind of notepad you would buy in a 24-book pack at Costco. It was also shared by the whole family. So it wasn't a special notepad for Patsy.
So how did Mayer take that notepad home? According to police reports, Mayer showed up at a Christmas party at the Ramsey family a few days before Christmas. It was a big party with 26 guests. Mayer comes to the Ramseys to complain that the landlord, Barnhill, doesn't like the dogs barking, but John invites Mayer to the party. I believe Mayer then walked around the house, found a notepad, and took it home. By the way, notepads were placed all over the Ramsey family.”
Of course, Mayer was interviewed by the police many times after the incident, but the DNA did not match, and the lie detector gave a negative result. He was removed from the suspect list because he testified that he did not come out of the house. Also, Mayer passed away in 2005, so we can no longer hear the truth from him.
Drug party and fresh pineapple
Mr. Clarke also questioned his neighbors. As a result, the existence of Barnhill's sons and grandchildren also emerged. Neighbors said they were concerned that Barnhill's son was involved with a Mexican drug cartel. In fact, Mr. Clark also found a document showing the involvement.
Massive drug party three doors away from murder scene
Also, on the night of December 25th, a large-scale drug party was held at a house three houses away from the Ramsey family.
We mentioned earlier that a pineapple was found in JonBenet's stomach, but Clark speculates that the pineapple may have been brought in by a drug party attendee. "The pineapple in JonBenet's stomach was not canned pineapple. On the other hand, the pineapple in the bowl on the kitchen table was canned pineapple, so JonBenet was eating the pineapple in the bowl on the kitchen table. It was not. Then where did the fresh pineapple come from? Not only fresh pineapple was found in JonBenet's stomach, but also ingredients used in cakes such as cherries, and grapes were found .In America, pineapples are used at Christmas parties. Fruit cake is often served, No such cake was served at the White family's party on Christmas Eve for the Ramsey family. When I talked to the participants of the drug party, it seems that the venue was set up with a buffet similar to that of a wedding party. I believe JonBenet ate a pineapple fruitcake brought in by someone who was at a drug party."
So who was at this party? According to Mr. Clark, Barnhill's grandson, female granddaughter, and her granddaughter's ex-husband, who were in their early 20s at the time, participated. And they think they are important witnesses in the case.
In fact, three different pieces of DNA were found in JonBenet's underwear. Three different shoe prints were also found at the scene. A neighbor also said he saw several people flee the Ramsey family after the incident.
Clark speculates that Joe Barnhill is also involved in the incident.
"The threatening letter ended with the words 'Victory! S.B.T.C but Joe, the landlord, flew a World War II fighter called the SB2C and had a poster of the SB2C on the wall of the house. John Ramsey’s investigator said that they reported this to Boulder Police, but they did not investigate."
There is also the mystery of the sharpie pen used to write the threatening letter. When Mr. Clarke asked John Ramsey about it, the Ramsey family had only one brand new water-based Sharpie pen, but upon investigating the manufacturing date, it was manufactured before the Ramsey family moved to Boulder. It turned out to be As such, Clarke believes someone involved in the incident may have brought the Sharpie pen.
There is also the mystery of the handwriting on the threatening letter.
"The handwriting on the threatening letter, which was said to resemble Patty's handwriting, is not Patty's. Six months ago, I was able to obtain the handwriting of Barnhill's granddaughter, and it is very similar to it. I believe the granddaughter wrote the threatening letter."
Man commits su***de by shooting head
Clark believes the incident involved seven people who lived across the street from the Ramsey family. There were seven involved. Barnhill's son who allegedly sold drugs, the son's two children (i.e., Barnhill's grandson and female grandson), the granddaughter’s ex-husband, and Mayer, who lived in the basement, and two others. 7 people. Together, Clark said the seven had debts worth $400,000. The FBI also considers the case to be a "personal murder for money."
By the way, of the three people that Mr. Clark considers to be important witnesses, the grandson committed su***de immediately after Mayer's photo and article were published in the tabloid "National Enquirer" where Mr. Clark reported on the investigation.
According to Clark, the reason behind the su***de, was a DNA test that concluded “we cannot rule out the possibility that the DNA found in Jonbenet’s underwear, was either Joe’s DNA or one of his relatives.”
"I think the grandson was afraid that his DNA would be tested. Before he died, he called his wife and said, 'I love you.' When the neighbors rushed to see him, the grandson went out into the street with a rifle and walked past several houses before committing su***de by shooting himself in the head. 12 neighbors witnessed it, blood splattered 15 feet away, they didn't know why he killed himself, but I did. With a large photo of Meyer living in the basement on the front page of The Enquirer, along with his grandfather's DNA results, the grandson must have thought it was only a matter of time before he was investigated.
Mr. Clark's reasoning
So what actually happened from the night of December 25th to the next morning? Let's reproduce it based on Mr. Clark's reasoning.
Barnhill's grandson, granddaughter, and ex-husband of the granddaughter, who were participating in a drug party three doors away from the Ramsey family, entered the Ramsey home through the kitchen door, and JonBenet, who was asleep. sneak into the bedroom.
The three wrapped the cord around JonBenet's neck and twisted it. To keep JonBenet from screaming. He also put a stun gun against JonBenet's back to keep him from moving.
The granddaughter wrapped JonBenet in a method of wrapping used by American Indians called "Papoose."
The granddaughter's ex-husband's parents ran a nursery, and that was also the wrapping method used at that nurseery. (It is said that JonBenet's body was wrapped in a "papus" wrapping when it was discovered.)
Around 1:30 am on the 26th, neighbors heard the girl screaming. The scream was fleeting and soon ceased. Clark speculates that JonBenet screamed when the cord around his neck loosened a little.
The three carried JonBenet, wrapped in sheets, down the spiral staircase to the basement.
(The reason Clark thinks they used the spiral staircase is because JonBenet's hair was reportedly covered in metallic green foil. The Ramsey family's spiral staircase is decorated with Christmas foil. had been
The kidnapped JonBenet and three people hiding in the basement.
However, at 5:52 in the morning, the three learned through the phone in the basement that Patty had called the police after noticing the threatening letter, and out of anger beat JonBenet to death. Swiss Army Knife screwdrivers and bricks were used in the killing.
However, the three did not immediately flee the Ramsey family after killing JonBenet. They escaped about 30 minutes after the police arrived after receiving a call from Patsy.
As to why Mr. Clark thinks the three did not escape immediately, he said:
“The reason the perpetrators didn’t flee immediately was that they didn’t want to leave footprints. However, no footprints were found, which was one of the reasons the Ramseys were suspected. I believe the three of them fled the Ramsey home after the police finished searching for the footprints, and neither Mr. John Ramsey was hiding inside the house. I think
Also, there is actually testimony that supports this.
“About 30 minutes after the police arrived at the Ramsey home, a neighbor who was using the bathroom said he saw several people in the dark. It is thought that there are three people: a grandson, a grandson, and the ex-husband of the grandson.”
The possibility of having the same DNA cannot be ruled out.
Mr. Clark moved to obtain the DNA of the three men. When the DNA of one of them was acquired and a DNA test was performed, the possibility that it was the same as the DNA attached to JonBenet's underwear could not be ruled out. It was the DNA of the granddaughter's ex-husband, who is Hispanic.
"The man currently lives in Colorado and is a heavy smoker, so we took the camel butt he was smoking from the trash can and sent it to two labs for DNA testing, but the DNA found in JonBenet's underwear. The same appraisal result was obtained, saying that the possibility that it was the same as the other could not be ruled out.
Mr. Clark told the Boulder police about it, but he would be turned away and he wouldn’t accept the results of the DNA test. As to why, Clark said:
“Actually, Boulder is said to be a hub for drug cartels of Mexican descent. I believe the Boulder Police Department is also involved in drug cartels. They knew there was a drug party just three doors down from JonBenet's house on Christmas night, but they protected it to go smoothly. Afterwards, I think they didn't investigate the people who were at the party and the Barnhills, and if they did, they would find out that they had protected the party without exposing it. And they directed suspicion at the Ramsey family.
In fact, the officer who investigated the incident at the time and did not accept the results of the DNA test conducted by Mr. Clark was disciplined by the Boulder Police Department on December 6 by being suspended from work for three days without pay and undergoing job improvement training. had been punished. The policeman had a problem at work.
"After nearly a decade of investigation, I believe the main reason this case has not been resolved is the direction of the Boulder Police investigation." says Clark.
John Ramsey himself said he was skeptical of the Boulder police investigation.
"Mr. Ramsey appealed to the Boulder Police Department asking them to look into it so he could pay for the DNA test, but they said no. , we believe the investigation needs to be taken out of the hands of the Boulder Police Department."
In fact, in October, John Ramsey sent a letter to the Governor of Colorado asking him to turn over DNA and evidence from the crime scene in the possession of the Boulder Police Department to an outside investigative agency. I am appealing to the governor to apply pressure. Mr. Ramsey is trying to have his DNA tested by a research agency that has the latest DNA testing technology. He also said he is willing to sue the state if the investigation does not make progress.
Mr. Clarke also removed the discarded items from Barnhill's grandson's trash can and secured the DNA. Currently, we are proceeding with the appraisal at our lab in Denver.
"Perpetrators must be brought to justice."
Mr. Clark's investigation will continue.
