WORLD on Campus WoC is a news website for college students looking for news from a new perspective that will help them develop a Christian worldview.

WORLD tries to be salt, not sugar. We are dependent on God and independent of any political faction or interest group. We don't let advertisers influence news content. We don't print glorified press releases. We respect the office of president of the United States and submit to the ruling authorities instituted by God (Romans 13:1-6), but we will be critical when necessary-even with those whose po

licies we generally agree with. We criticize corruption, even when (sometimes especially when) it erupts among Christians. We avoid sourcery, where unnamed sources spin the news their way. We cover all aspects of the news: national, international, and cultural; politics and business; medicine, science, technology, and sports. We have feisty columns and religious reflections. We even have cartoons and a page with funny or strange stories. But what matters the most is this: We believe in a God who tells the truth and wants us to do the same.

The Smith Family Christmas Letter:

Dear Family and Friends:

The year 2023 was eventful, with many personal and family milestones, though none more significant than the addition of a new daughter to the family. The photo is from the wedding of Cole to Tasha (nee Anastasia Hueffner). The wedding took place in June in Colorado Springs, where they met. (Both are graduates of the Air Force Academy, and Tasha is still an active-duty officer.) They now live in Southern California. Tasha is stationed at Vandenburg AFB, and that puts Cole close enough to Los Angeles for him to continue to pursue his film career.

Morgan spent most of the year living in New York City, working for a firm that specializes in designing sets for high-end fashion editorials and advertisements. Some of the sets she designed made their way into top-tier magazines. She made trips to Ireland and Spain this year. Late in the year, she spent 10 weeks in Switzerland at L’Abri, the famous Christian study center founded by Frances and Edith Schaeffer.

Walker continues to pursue his passion for photography at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. He hopes to graduate in May with a master’s degree in photojournalism. He also spent time commercial fishing (and shooting amazing photographs) in Alaska.

Brittany lives in Colorado Springs, where she is a freelance writer. She is still enjoying the Rockies and spent this summer camping and backpacking in the San Juans, at the Great Sand Dunes, and in the Pikes Peak Region in her own backyard.

Missy continues to work at Hickory Grove Christian School, though in the past year she transitioned from running the international student program to starting the school’s first alumni program. Her first big alumni event wildly surpassed any previous alumni activity the school has had. Missy and I celebrated our 40th anniversary this year.

In October, I celebrated my four-year anniversary as president of MinistryWatch.com. It has been a fun and exciting work year, and we won some awards for journalistic excellence from the Evangelical Press Association. Music, always an important part of my life, has been taking up more time. I am part of a community band that does three concerts a year, as well as two brass ensembles that often perform at community events, especially around Christmas and national holidays. I play guitar (and sometimes the tuba!) with our church’s worship team, as well as at various bluegrass jams and “open mic” events around the city. These musical endeavors have been great fun, and they are nourishing to my mind and soul.

I pray all is well in your world, and I hope our trails cross in the new year.

Grace and peace….

I'm not Catholic, but I think all of us should pay attention to this decision. It will have dramatic consequences for all Christians, and for the culture at large.

A church official said the blessings amounted to “a real development” that nevertheless did not amend “the traditional doctrine of the Church about marriage.”

John Glenn died on this date in 2016. I had the pleasure of meeting him a time or two. Here's an appreciation I wrote on the occasion of his passing.

A well-told but tragic story. The moral of the story is this: Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

When Dave Hollis quit his plum Disney job to join his wife Rachel’s self-help empire, the pair built a business around sharing some of their darkest feelings on social media. The reality was even worse.

I'm a little puzzled by all Taylor Swift haters coming out in the wake of her being named TIME's Person of the Year. Whether you like her music or not, can there be much doubt that she is the #1 popular music artist/entertainer on the planet right now? And if you have a daughter between the ages of, say, 12 and 30, you don't need to tell me how much of an impact she has had on their lives (whether you are happy about that or not is another question).

As Damon of Athens said, "Give me the songs of a people and I care not who writes their laws." Never more true than today.

This was the year Taylor Swift perfected her craft—not just with her music, but in her position as the master storyteller of the modern era.

I wrote this in December of 2012 for WORLD, on the occasion of Dave Brubeck's death. Also worth noting that he was born on this date in 1920. I share it to commemorate both his birth, his death, and a remarkable life:
