Inviting all my West Virginia friends in Charleston, WV to a “Steinway Celebration!” at the Culture Center this Wednesday evening, May 29th at 6PM. It will be a joyful evening of great music and informal chat and the guest of honor will be the beautiful Steinway on the Culture Center stage. You’ll hear lots of old favorites, and the concert is free and open to the public. Looking forward to celebrating with all of you this Wednesday! Should be a fun evening!!

I had a wonderful time at Steinway Hall in NYC this past week. Had the chance to record some Prokofiev on their beautiful Spirio piano and what amazing technology this is! We recorded Prokofiev's Sixth Piano Sonata, one of the masterworks for the piano as well as his early First Sonata written at the ripe old age of 15 and some of his beautiful Visions fugitives. Great fun sharing this great music and working with Jon Feidner and his wonderful team! Here we are after our session. Had to smile when I saw this piano in Steinway's window- perfect for springtime!

What a beautiful weekend I spent in Morgantown at WVU! I was awarded an Honorary Doctorate on Saturday morning. Worked hard for my first one from the University of Michigan and all I had to do for this one was smile, laugh and say a few words to the graduates. There was a lovely dinner the night before at the President’s House, and Liszt and I played for our supper and had a grand time meeting everyone. So much fun celebrating with Lucy Mauro and her graduating students. Lots to be thankful for and lots of joy going around!!

Here is the first part of the video-portrait I made to honor the man and his music. His music gives so much joy and we need joy more than ever these days. The second part is a masterclass with performances of his Three Piano Sonatas and the early Danzas. I am so grateful for his friendship and the chance to learn from him and of course thankful to receive the dedication of his final work the Third Piano Sonata that I will always treasure.

April 1st: Today is the 151st birthday of Sergei Rachmaninoff. What a deep dark soul this man had, and yet his music always inspires and uplifts. I played this Prelude at the Memorial Concert of a dear friend. Noelle Mann was the Director of the Prokofiev Archives in London. Rachmaninoff conveys all that we were feeling that evening. Thank you Sergei Rachmaninoff for sharing your gifts and touching our souls. We need your music more than ever these days!

March 5th: Today we remember Sergei Prokofiev who died 71 years ago. There were not enough flowers left in Moscow to honor him that day because his nemesis Josef Stalin had also died. One of history’s ironies!

Let us honor his memory with a performance of his masterwork, the Sixth Sonata, part of my masterclass series devoted to his Three War Sonatas. The Prokofiev Family Trust in the UK has awarded me a grant to film this video project that also includes interviews with his grandson Gabriel Prokofiev, his biographer Harlow Robinson and the Russian expert on Prokofiev, Natalia Savkina, Proposed release date for “Prokofiev: A Man Misunderstood” September, 2024.

Remembering today the birthday of one of the giants of the 20th century, Bela Bartok and remembering how much fun I had talking about his Allegro Barbaro written in 1911 for my friends at Tonebase. Happy Birthday to Franz Schubert, the poet of the piano. When I recorded Schubert’s last two sonatas, I also recorded Liszt’s transcription of one of his songs. Because I decided to take all the repeats in these sonatas, there was no room left on the CD for “Gretchen am spinnrade,” Schubert’s poignant statement of love and loss. Today marks the 39th anniversary of the passing of my dear friend the composer Alberto Ginastera. I was blessed to have known him and to have worked with him. In tribute to his contribution to the music world and to me personally, we have been working on a film to honor his legacy and to tell his story. Looking forward to sharing our labor of love with all of you. In the meantime, let me share with you the piece that he wrote for me- his Third Piano Sonata.
