This behaviour showcases how leopards are not easily contained to a single reserve. Thereâs something incredibly thrilling about retrieving your trap camera and sifting through the footage to see what youâve captured. These tools are invaluable for conservationists and researchers who monitor wildlife, often revealing a diverse array of species. Occasionally, you get exceptionally lucky and capture something truly rare, like the elusive white-tailed mongoose and brown hyena featured in the clip above. In this instance, we set up the trap camera along the fence line in hopes of recording footage of a leopardess and her cubs that have been moving in and out of the reserve. Although we didnât catch the leopard this time, we were treated to an amazing variety of other creatures, including some rarely seen species.

Yesterday was probably one of our most exciting pack drives we've had to date. Expert safari guide Gareth Poole Safaris and cameraman Andrew Rider were out in search of the cheetah brothers not knowing what was about to happen.
After following the boys for fifteen minutes or so, we realised they were headed straight for a waterhole that constantly has potential prey and we sat patiently. our patience was eventually rewarded as one of the two cheetahs started stalking a herd of nyala.
in the blink of an eye, with the most astounding speed, the cheetah singled out a female nyala and gave chase. unfortunately the nyala was not quick enough to getaway resulting in a remarkably successful meal for the two cheetah brothers.

It was a very special day here on the Rietspruit this past Friday, as our two resident female wild dogs were introduced to a male dog that came all the way from Pongola in the hopes of creating a new pack. in order to do this we used a technique called the rubbing method where you physically rub the dogs together to spread their scent on one another in the hopes that when the dogs wake up they all smell the same and think they already know one another. It was an amazing scene to be a part of and thank you to all those involved. your efforts don't going unnoticed and thank you for your dedication and commitment to such an amazing cause. Above, we have a white rhinoceros kicking up the dust during a winters sunset making them look like a real life dinosaur. Rhino bulls will often walk along roads, dragging their face in the sand as a form of scent marking to mark their territory from other potentially dominant bulls. Did you know that the closest living rhino relatives are tapirs, horses and zebras. These animals are known as perissodactyls also known as odd-toed ungulates.

The African Elephant is the world's largest land animal â with bull elephants, standing up to 3m high and weighing up to 6,000kg on average. Males only reach their full size at 35-40 years - thatâs well over half their lifespan as wild elephants can live for up to 60-70 years.
Elephant tusks are actually enlarged incisor teeth which first appear when elephants are around 2 years old. Tusks continue growing throughout their lives. Tusks are used to help with feeding - ripping bark off trees or as a defence when fighting. Elephants have around 150,000 muscle units in their trunk, which is why they can pick up even the most small and delicate pieces of sticks and vegetation the bush has to offer.

There is something about a whole pride of lions moving closer and closer towards your vehicle, only to end up walking straight past it, that really does make your heart skip a beat or three. When viewing lions in the wild, patience is crucial, as these cats can sleep 20+ hours a day. Here on the Rietspruit, we are very fortunate to have a pride that is well habituated to vehicles and will often walk straight past you, providing surreal photographic opportunities.
