Life Below Canal A guide to life south of Canal Street in New York City.

Welcome to Life Below Canal, the community covering everything you need to know to make the most of living in downtown New York!

Life Below Canal was born out of passion for all things downtown New York. Living in what we've affectionately called 'TriBaFi' for over 10 years, our nights and weekends have been spent exploring the neighborhood, checking out the latest restaurant open

ings, art installations, live events, and everything else downtown New York City has to offer. After years of being to go-to person within our friend groups for sharing information on downtown happenings (and woo-ing our friends to move downtown), we wanted to create a community to share our findings and help connect neighbors of all ages, life stages and interests. Life Below Canal is the result of being passionate about this neighborhood, and wanting to connect with others to share our findings and to meet other locals. Whether it's meeting up for a run on the West Side Highway or checking out the latest restaurant openings, we look forward to getting to know everyone else living life below Canal.

, the longest operating performance venue in lower Manhattan, presents The Beatles: Let it Be by Classic Albums Live on March 8, 2024, at 8:00 PM. Tickets are $45-$50 for General Admission and may be purchased online or by calling 212-220-1460.

Remember when you used to listen to an entire album? When flipping the vinyl meant you were in store for more greatness? Founded in 2003, Classic Albums Live has quickly earned a stellar reputation for perfectly recreating classic rock albums in its entirety, reproduced to be as true to the original recording as possible, and without costumes or impersonators. The musicians go to great lengths to faithfully recreate every sound on the original album live on stage, note for note, cut for cut. The concert includes the original Let it Be album performed in its entirety followed by a set of Beatles classic hits. The Beatles’ Let It Be, released in 1970, contains many of the Beatles most iconic songs: from the title track “Let It Be”, “The Long And Winding Road”, “Across the Universe”, “I’ve Got A Feeling”, “Get Back” and more.

Come to the Seaport Museum to Valentine Like a Sailor on February 10 and 11, 2024, from 11am to 4:30pm, at 207 Water Street, NYC. Bring 19th-century maritime craft tradition to your handmade Valentine’s Day cards. Attendees will create their own special trinket for the holiday and learn about the unique history of Sailors’ Valentines—tokens of love and friendship. seaportmuseum.org/valentine-like-sailor.
Historically, these small wooden boxes were given by seafarers to their wives, sweethearts, daughters, and loved ones when they returned from a long voyage. The small boxes open to reveal sentimental messages surrounded with intricate mosaics of shells and found objects arranged in exquisite geometric patterns and motifs such as hearts, anchors, and flowers.
Using beads, buttons, and shells, families and friends of all ages are invited to the Seaport Museum’s introductory galleries where we’ll continue the creative tradition together.

announces a new free family-friendly Interactive Sail Raising Tour for Kids, running from Wednesday, February 21 through Sunday, February 25, 2024, with these hands-on guided tours at 12pm, 2pm, and 4pm.

Looking for family-friendly activities to enjoy while New York City public schools are closed for Mid-Winter Recess? The Seaport Museum is offering extended open days that each include expanded tours that teach you how to raise the sail on our historic 1885 tall ship, Wavertree.

Bring your family and friends to participate in a hands-on tour that will transport you and your kids into the fascinating world of 19th century sailors. In addition to getting to raise the sail, the tour will also show the young people in your life how sailors worked and lived aboard a 19th century cargo sailing ship—from the captain to the ship’s officers, cooks, and crew.

On your visit, you will explore the main deck that features the newly restored forecastle, where the crew bunked; the galley, where meals were prepared; the saloon, which acted as the captain’s living room and the ship’s office in port; and the quarterdeck, where you can man the helm, turn the ships wheel, and learn about the capstan. You will also get a look into the vast cargo hold, which stored bulk cargo on Wavertree’s many journeys to distant ports around the globe during her 24-year sailing career.

Advanced registration is required for sail raising tours as space is limited. All children must be accompanied by an adult; maximum four children per adult. Strollers cannot be brought onboard. Registration is required for each participating child and adult. seaportmuseum.org/mid-winter-recess

“Domino Effect,” the newest public art installation, is here to inject a little whimsy into midwinter’s slow, frigid crawl. The piece will be on display at Fosun Plaza in front of 28 Liberty St. starting January 29, gifting workers, visitors, residents and various passersby with a dazzling domino-themed light-and-music show.

Presented in partnership with Quartier des Spectacles International, “Domino Effect” was created by Montreal-based design studio Ingrid Ingrid. The interactive installation consists of 120 giant dominos distributed across 12 tables in Fosun Plaza. Each domino has a color and a sound all its own, inviting visitors to collaborate on creating an orchestra of sound and light. Every set features a different instrument profile (vocals, percussion, marimba, balafon or flute), and each domino has its own sound.

The installation will be on view through March 6.

The playground, which will eventually be part of the park’s “estuarium,” aka environmental learning center, (more on that soon) is a 4,000-square-foot recreational space featuring two interactive super-sized play structures in the shape of endangered sturgeon species native to the Hudson River, climbing nets, safety surfacing and a seat wall.
